Ludwig

collapse expand iconDescription

Ludwig’s Supraphonic LM402 snare was drum god John Bonham's go-to snare and is featured on tons of Led Zeppelin albums. It features a chrome-plated aluminum shell that produces a sharp snare tone and can cut through any instrument mix.

Versatile, Famed Snare Drum

The Suprasonic LM402 delivers that powerful and articulate attack heard on multiple hit songs from the '60s to the present, crossing over musical styles and genres. No matter the style, the Supraphonic LM402 snare drum has the sound you crave.

High-Quality Components

The LM402 features 1.2 mm shells that deliver a quick response and truly nuanced playing. Triple-flanged steel hoops combined with a P-85 throw-off create foolproof tuning for finding your ideal sound. With a depth of 6.5", the Supraphonic delivers bold tones with powerful projection.

Born in the USA

The Ludwig Supraphonic snare drum was custom developed right here in the USA. Ludwig snare drums have dominated stages and studios since 1911 and are a world-renowned company. Product production may be available overseas for a lesser cost, but Ludwig proudly crafts and sells high-quality drums right here at home. The proceeds of that drum go to hard-working Ludwig artisans who live and work locally, and that truly rocks.

Beaded Aluminum Provides Stunning Allure and Powerful Attack

The Supraphonic snare drum is crafted of a chrome-plated, seamless, beaded aluminum that is truly striking visually and musically. This drum simply glistens under the stage lights. The handsome sheen of the aluminum with an elegant, gold Ludwig emblem creates a chic allure that will surely turn heads. The beaded aluminum delivers a bold snare crack filled with complex tones, truly blending well with any musical style. Players can easily access the bright and snappy rimshots and poppy side stick tones, great for funk and pop styles.

Quality Hardware

The Supraphonic features a reliable P-85 strainer and ten classic Imperial lugs for rock-solid tuning capabilities. Steel, triple-flanged hoops enhance sustain while the P88AC throw-off and P35 Butt Plate secure the snares whether activated or dampened. Ludwig Weather Master coated batter head and clear snare-side head outfit the Supraphonic snare drum, for a professional sound, right out of the box. The classic snare drum

The Ludwig Supraphonic is the holy grail of snare drums. No matter how many new manufacturers attempt to reinvent the wheel, drummers keep coming back to the supra as the workhorse of the gigging and recording worlds. This is by far the most recorded snare in history (probably on all genres of music), and there is a reason. The sound can best be described as classic. This is what a snare is meant to sound like at all different tunings. Down low with loose snares, there is a deep and throaty voice. Up tight, the snare brightens out with a crisp POP. I find that it works best right in the middle of the tuning range--this gives an articulate, full-bodied sound that will work well in any genre. The supra is basically the most versatile, best sounding snare drum ever created (and generations of drummers will attest to this).

Worst throw off ever made.

The snare drum itself deserves 5 stars, but because the throw off is so bad I had to give it 3 stars. This is one of the best snare drums ever made, yet Ludwig continues to pair it with the worst throw off ever made! The throw off constantly gets stuck and won't work. This poor quality makes me want to never buy another Ludwig product ever again.

When I bought my very first Ludwig kit in1971 it came with a 5x14" 400 chrome snare drum. I played that drum for years and absolutely loved it. The 402 is the 6.5x14" version, but some fine improvements have been made on the newer models. 1. 2.3mm hoops. 2. Rubber fittings for the Imperial lugs. This keeps the tension rods straight with the 2.3m heavier hoops. 3. Much improved P-88 Strainer and P-35 Butt. SO much better than the old P-85/P-32 Combo. 4. Better chrome plating job that won't peel off. 5. Same seamless drawn aluminum alloy shell with center bead for strength. All said, the LM402 is a beast. Just a great drum that is super fun to play, easy to tune, and sounds great in all tunings. If I only could have ONE snare drum, this would be it. This is the drum all other drum makers have been trying to copy for over 50 years. Get the original. Ludwig LM402.

SomI never had a superphonic and always wanted to get one. After years of thinking about it, and being in love with my GMS all maple snare, I bought one to have and to see what of everyone's use of it really meant. Well after a few rimshots ala Bonham, it was easy to hear why. Sharp, crisp attack. Lots of body and a warm over tone. The throw off is actually clean and simple and the ratchet settings allowed me to easily remember how many clicks to go from one direction or the other to enjoy the snares for whatever style I wanted to play. And after hearing the drum in recordings with the rest of my kit, it's now part of my arsenal of snare drums. The most startling thing about this snare is how much less she needs to be hit to get her crack like Bonham. The right mic'ing and you can sound like Bonham while having a sandwich. Don't take it from me....hear it for yourself, between your legs, and then tell me what ya tink!

  • Best snare drum ever!
