Overview

Epiphone presents the new Ltd. Ed. SG-Special-I, a great way for new players to get started on electric guitar at a price anyone can afford. The SG-Special-1 has the same classic “SG” tone, look, and feel that’s gone virtually unchanged over 50 years and players from all genres around the world recognize the “SG” as a one of the best and most distinctive electric guitars ever made. But seasoned pros will also love the new Ltd. Ed. SG Special-1 for its powerful Ceramic Open Coil humbuckers and smooth easy-to-play Mahogany SlimTaperTM neck.  Plus, the Ltd. Ed. SG-Special-1 comes in three beautiful classic color finishes, Cherry, Ebony, and Pelham Blue.

The Ltd. Ed. SG Special-1 joins the fan-favorite Special-1 Series designed to bring superior sound and historic Epiphone-style to players just starting out as well as to veterans who want a “workhorse” guitar to take on the road that’s lightweight but makes no compromise in electronics and hardware.

The “SG” profile is one of the most recognized in rock & roll.  First introduced in the early 1960s, “SG” guitars have been the driving force behind Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, jam bands, and British rock.  And now with the Ltd. Ed. SG-Special-I, Epiphone fans around the world can enjoy owning and playing a real Epiphone “SG” at a great price.

The Ltd. Ed. SG Special-1 has a Mahogany body cut to the historic SG profile and a bolt-on Mahogany neck featuring the same SlimTaperTM profile enjoyed by owners of iconic Epiphones like the Les Paul Standard and the Casino.  The Mahogany neck has a Rosewood fingerboard with 22 easy-to-press medium jumbo frets with pearloid dot inlays, just like vintage SGs.  Even though new players might favor the Ltd. Ed. SG Special-1, this SG boasts many of the same specifications found on all SGs including 1.68” nut and a 24.75” scale length.

The new Ltd. Ed. SG Special-1 is powered by an Epiphone Ceramic 700TTM Open Coil humbucker in the bridge or lead position and an Epiphone Ceramic 650RTM Open Coil humbucker in the neck or rhythm position.  Ceramic pickups have been a favorite of Hard Rock and Metal players for decades. Ceramic magnets became more readily available in the late 60s and early 70s just as guitar players were incorporating overdrive and distortion into their sound. Ceramic pickups have a sharp, articulate, and saturated tone that’s a perfect compliment to the SG Special-1’s Mahogany body. Pickup selection is made via a standard 3-way pickup selector and controls include Master Volume and Master Tone, both with classic Black “Speed” Knobs.

The Ltd. Ed. SG-Special I has Epiphone’s world renown rock-solid hardware including a heavy duty 1/4” jack, easy-turning machine heads with a pro 15:1 tuning ratio, and a classic wrap-around bridge and tailpiece compensated for reliable intonation.

A long time ago I had a "1964" Gibson SG. I had to sell it In the early 90's. I always Wanted Another SG. But After having the real deal I just could not be satisfied with a lesser version or so I thought at that time, and could not afford to get one like I had again So I just went on for years Wanting one..Well I finally had things going good and could finally indulge my desires for that SG feel again. I went to GC after several other shops and several other SG's. I had Intended on spending a very large sum of Money on the Expensive big Brother of this. I had tried out 3 that all cost more then my first car did by a long shot.. I heard a 17 yr old kid playing one of these and said "HUH?" Wait a Minute. Now seriously this is their Bottom dollar version It can't compare to the Real Deal! Um 3 Chords into my test run I was In love! And when I walked out the door with one brand new for like 10% of what I intended on spending I was Ecstatic! This Guitar Looks, feels, And Sounds Enough like my old one that I am Gonna buy the other two colors available and just smile every time I play One. This just might be THE Best value on the Wall in My Opinion...

I'm just starting to play six strings again after about ten years of working to hard. I no longer had a solid body electric so I purchased this one. I wish I'd bought something a little nicer or at least bought something dinged up off the wrack. It's got problems. Loose tuners and some serious fitting problems. It's a shame because the finish is nice and I love the way the neck feels.

I've had it a week. It's hardly been played and I've babied it the whole time. The bridge pickup isn't level and I couldn't adjust it to make it right. The back strap lug is counter sunk and twisted just from hanging on a strap as I've never set it on the floor or dropped it. And the nut is glued in slightly askew. It's buzzy at the first two frets too.

Loving it!

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

These truly are the days of miracle and wonder. What we have here is a guitar that is beautifully finished in Pelham Blue, does everything one would ask for a guitar to do, and cost just north of $ 100.

The only fault I can find is that the tuning machine heads are not as good as on my Gibson's. They stay in tune well enough, but seem sloppy when getting in tune. A small matter, but it's the only thing I can complain about.

Don't mistake what I am saying, if I had a couple of grand that I could drop on a SG to go with my Gibson LP, I would love to do it. But since I may be the worst guitarist who ever lived, buying this affordable SG that is a total hoot to play is a great thing to do with the small money that I can afford.

Pelham blue

By JSmith

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

I purchased this guitar a couple days ago. It played well at the store and I took it home. I was able to set it up with really low action and it plays fantastic now. The neck is thin and has a pretty flat board. Very comfortable to play. The humbuckers are decent, they have a lot of bite and suit my playing very well. It stays in tune now that I have widened the nut slots for thicker strings. Over all really pleased with this guitar. The Pelham blue finish is awesome, not a lot of specials with this color.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

This is a serious piece of equipment. Flawless red finish. Ceramic magnets crank out that late 60's/70 's tone that everybody looks for. Slim 60's tapered neck. Want that vintage Who sound, well here it is

I've played bass and guitar for 40 years and this axe is right up there with anything I've played

In my old age, I find that stripped down does it best

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

This Guitar has simply amazed me. I wanted an SG for a while and have several High End Strats and a couple Les Pauls. A decent collection of guitars and have owned over 400 guitars in my 30 yrs of playing.Right now my budget just would not allow me to get the SG I had my eyes on. I was in my Local GC shopping around for a new toy and actually had $500 on me to spend. Well I came across one of these in the Blue Finish and just on a fluke picked it up and tried it out. @ seconds later I could not hand them my $127 plus tax fast enough. I HAD TO HAVE IT!. I took it home and did a fast set up on it. Wound up with a Guitar that has action like you'd expect from a way more expensive unit with almost no adjustments. I have a set of Gibson Pups on my shelf I intended to install. Um Not gonna do that!. The stock Pickups Deliver plenty Crunch and a smooth mellow tone when needed too. So Why Mess with it? For the Money I spent I am VERY VERY happy and I Intend on going back and buying a red and a black one to add to my collection. And I'll still have spent less then 1 of the Gifg dollar Gibby's would cost. WAY LESS. Not it's not a Gibson but lemme tell ya what I have played plenty of those and for the money,I'll take 3 of these and some cash left over before I spend the bg bucks on It's Big brother.

Bought this for my 10 year old son...he loves it! I enjoy playing it too. Pretty light weight compared to my Fender Strat, fast neck, easy to set-up, and sounds great over my Line 6 Spider IV amp. Highly recommend.

Great modding platform, not suggested as a first guitar

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

Super cheap price. Wouldn't say a great beginner guitar. The one I got pretty much needed a nut replacement out of the box. Oxidation on some of the metal parts, especially under the truss rod cover. Strings were sitting flat on the first 10 or so frets upon taking it out of the box. Still, an alright guitar for a really cheap price and I'd say a really good platform for modding. Still I'd spend another 100-200 dollars for a "beginner" guitar. Between the mentioned problems, the really loose tuners and jack and toggle, etc I think a beginner may get frustrated by the lack of QC.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

I'm an intermediate player and this is my first SG style guitar and for the price its a great deal. Tweeked it a little out of the box (lowered the action and raised the pickups). But those are personal preferences.. out of the box it played fine and sounded great. Don't be scared by the fixed bridge the guitar I got is intonated perfectly. That may change if you change string gauge, but there is some adjustment to the bridge.

The Phelem Blue is not carried in the stores so I ordered via the web site... no other site seems to carry that color so for the price of the off the rack guitar I got a custom color which is nice.

The SG Special Edition plays great and sound great.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

The guitar I got looks quite different from the one pictured in the photo above. It has a stripped down version of the tune-Amatic and the tunings machines are trash. I had to change them out for a stock pair of Dean Guitars tuners I had laying around just to be able to play the guitar. It's a nice little guitar if you don't mind doing a little work to make it gigable.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

for what it's worth, I've been toying with the idea of buying an affordable SG for some months and did much online investigating and guitar store handling, Been playing cheaply priced guitars for more than 30 years and would classify myself on the upper side of experienced player. Anyhow visited guitar works for the I don't know how many times and found this in pelham blue, threw some chords and licks on it, like it very much, very good for a vintage Black Sabbath tone. be sure to check the setting of the fret wires, sight down the neck. I have seen some of these with uneven fret bars and even one with a less than acceptable fretboard as to flatness, so check that fret board. Tuned way down to C# slight fret buzz, raised the bridge and pickups a slight bit and everything just fine, even tuned down this far. Yes all in all, very good.
