Celestion G12 EVH Van Halen Signature Guitar Speaker 15 ohm

Worst part-breaking it in. Best part-everything else. I bought a pair of these on sale from GC years ago. Just couldn't get a great tone when I first installed them in a 212 poplar cab I built. I don't play very loud, or at least I never use to. Kept going back to them once in a while. After break in, it had that classic 70's hard rock greenback tone. After 10 hours the bass come out. After 20 hours the flatness went away as the highs started to bloom. Lovely round and warm clean tone, but has those lovely highs. Not brittle at all. I would recommend anyone buying these to make sure you give them time to break in. It is worth it. I would have rated this a 4/5 speaker at purchase(cheaper than a heritage) after 20 hours(maybe less if you play loud) Everything smooths out. No fizz, no brittle top end. Just really nice tone. What prompted this review was a recent move. I still have 7 speakers that need a home so was thinking of swapping out the EVH and maybe selling them. Been sitting under my Traynor YBA-1 for a long time. I don't play it because even at only 40 watts it will shake the neighbours windows. Tried my Phaez Pasadena 22 watt sounded like marshall goodness. Plugged in my lunchbox 15 watt Dark Terror with very low gain and high master. Got those cleans I was mentioning. (I know everyone thinks the dark terror is a metal amp, which it can be, but it also has great cleans. A whole lot of tones from a single tone knob amp) Tried a red knob Fender Champ with a lineout I made. Just wow. Chimey cleans. Can't recommend these enough. I like the regular greenback, but there is a bit of high end harmonics on it that don't always suit what I am playing. Use to play with Vin30s in my Traynor YCS50H, but I keep going back to the orange with these two. At least for home use. Hope you got a good idea of how this sounds. I also recommend looking up Zilla Cabs, they have done some terrific comparisons of various greenbacks. Johan Segeborn as well has tried many of the greens against each other too. If you are wondering where it sits in comparison I would start there.

Added this speaker to aftermarket ext can to use with my evh lbx. Sounds awesome

Well I was after an aftermarket speaker that wouldn't have the high end and lack bass response of the Celestion G12 Vintage 30. The G12 was the stock speaker in my Marshall Slash SL-5 and as much of a legendary speaker as the G30 is, it wasn't the best speaker IMHO for the SL-5. I'm sure it serves 80% of the customer base very well; however, after checking out the specs, reviews and tone compares of the G12 EVH, I was fairly certain this was the speaker for me. After a whole 10 min install process, I was immediately assured that my purchase was right on the money. Going by paper specs, there's not much to differentiate the V30 and G12 EVH...until you hear them in the same amp/cab with the same settings. The warmth, depth and less top end I was expecting was quickly apparent. Bottom LINE: No issues here.

Installed a pair of them into a combo and they were too dull sounding , I replaced them with the Greenback 25 watters and it sounds much better to me , I heard they were the same as a Heritage 20 Greenback but I have that speaker and Love it , they're not the same as the Heritage

Really good sounding speaker. I am especially impressed with the clean tones that this speaker produced. I am playing it through my Friedman Runt 20 watt head and matching speaker cabinet. I was surprised that this speaker was made in the UK and not in some other country. I only have about an hour on it so far and know that it will sound better when I get some more hours on it, buy I am impressed with the tone of this speaker so far. I believe it is a good value for the money.

I wanted to wait until I broke this speaker in before doing a full review. I bought 2 of these. I have them each in a 1x12 cab. Both closed back and stacked. I use these speakers with a Valve 105 "bimbo" head. The Valve 105 is basically a 5 watt Marshall JMP. It's an awesome little amp for that classic Marshall sound at bedroom volume. It makes the class 5 sound like a toy. It uses 1 el34 tube, 2 12ax7's. The Valve 105 and this speaker are a match made in heaven. I have a 2002 Gibson SG standard with the 490/498 pickups but with original black beautie capacitors and CTS 500K pots. I play mostly blues and straight AC/DC. I don't care about other styles of music. I was trying to nail that classic Angus Young tone but on a bedroomish scale. AC/DC's sound is easy to obtain with the right tools. Yet like most people I don't live in an arena where I can blast a vintage 100 watt Marshall through several 4x12s. I did try the non Heritage g12m-25 watt greenbacks. I just couldn't get THAT sound with them. These EVH speakers are tonally superior to the normal greenbacks and are tonally identical to the g12m-20 watt Heritage. Which were at the time $80 more. Why pay more for the same thing? After break in the bass just kicked in. Very deep, The mids are very pronounced, The highs are softer and not shrilly. Like all Celestions. Prior to break in they sound a little nasally. Yet these sounded really great out of the box. They just keep getting better every time I play. I finally can get that Angus Young tone without buying a 1977 Marshall JMP or JTM45 or Superlead plus 4x12 with 1970's Celestions. This is the speaker to pair with your Marshall for any Classic rock sounds. I would imagine they would sound great with any amps. But I will never know cause I found my sound and I am done.
