  • Nice bass! Except for this terrible pickup

I love this bass. Medium scale strings are fun to play, the neck is fast, with an action adjustment it plays beautifully. Problem is, the pickup is just TERRIBLE. This "musicman"-style humbucker has an extremely scooped an throaty sound. Played by itself, you might think it's fine, but I could never adjust it to fit "in the mix" properly. I swapped out for several different "musicman"-style pickups, and they all had the same sound that I hated. So I eventually turned it into a "Jag-Stang" by routing my own custom pickguard replacement and putting old-school Mustang bass pickups in it (the proper oval ones, not Precision pickups!) Then I had one more problem: Medium scale means you have to buy medium-scale strings, like D'Addario's ECB81M's, which work great, but I really wanted to be able to put full-scale strings on it to have a wider selection to choose from. So I went "Full Jag-Stang" and put a through-body Mustang Bridge on it!!!! Now it is the bass of my dreams -- Mustang pickups which sound crystal-sweet, Mustang bridge for awesome sustain, and I can use full-scale 34" strings (with only a tiny bit of non-silk string on the 4th-string tuning peg.) If Squier would sell this exact Jaguar bass but with the Jag-Stang modifications that I made to mine, they would sell a MILLION of them!!! SQUIER, ARE YOU LISTENING??? In short, this is a nice "project bass". But, if you want to use as-is, be prepared for limitations: Crappy-sounding pickup, and must use medium-scale strings which are hard to find.

The base guitar works as advertised. I am very happy smith sound and performance on stage. Great work and great people at the guitar center. Will be taking advantage of the free lessons being offered.

i'm honestly pretty broke, but yeah this thing was pretty cheap, it has a good sound, pickup is nice, my main complaint is a bit of fret buzz but yeah if i had the money, and i had to, i'd buy another one.

I'm mainly a guitar play, but I wanted a bass to have around for recording purposes and the occasional jam. Squier has really stepped up their game for the Affinity series. This bass sounds thick and throaty, and feels great to play! The set up out of the box was decent enough for what it is, I only had to slightly adjust the intonation and lower the action to my liking. Overall, a lot of bass, for not a lot of bucks.
