Mapex

collapse expand iconDescription

The Mapex Black Panther Predator copper snare drum is the choice for drummers who need an especially dark metal sound. The Predator brings a smoky, powerful sense to any musical situation. The copper shell produces a profound and weighty fundamental roar with mid-low range tone.

The Predator is fitted with Mapex's proprietary Sonic Saver hoops, a middle ground between triple-flange and die-cast. They’re made from steel that’s folded inward for a round shape instead of a flat flange. Sonic Savers control the tone for a drier sound than triple-flange, but they don’t deaden the drum the way die-cast hoops can. They also reduce wear on the drum and sticks. The result is a focused snare with clean, punchy rim shots every time.

I love this snare. It has a deep, darker, warm sound but yet really cranks when you lay into it. No nasty overtones. I was looking at the Gretsch Brooklyn COB snare because I wanted something that really cranked. I was not disappointed when I chose the Mapex Predator instead, mainly due to it's significantly lower price. The name is quite fitting as this thing is a beast and it looks equally awesome. It really cuts and with rimshots it's loud yet tonal. The throw mechanism is great and I find this snare has a great feel which I attribute to the heavier hoops they are using. I actually like this better than my Ludwig Black Beauty, especially in the area of feel, bite and overtone. At first, I wasn't sure about snares being held on by string but it works just fine. Great quality, great sound. When combined w/ a Musician's Friend coupon, I couldn't find a snare w/ a better price to value ratio. I don't think you will either.
