Introducing Next Generation JBL 3 Series MkII Studio Monitors

JBL

collapse expand iconDescription

The JBL 305P MkII 5" powered studio monitors are designed for audio professionals seeking high-quality, accurate sound reproduction. Featuring JBL's patented high-definition imaging waveguide technology, these bi-amplified monitors provide crystal-clear highs, smooth mids and tight, controlled bass for the most authentic mix translation. With compact cabinets housing 5" woven Kevlar woofers and 1" soft-dome tweeters, the 305P MKII's deliver a wide frequency range and impressive volume levels without distortion. These innovative, affordable studio monitors are here to help you achieve studio quality sound.

High-Definition Imaging Waveguide Provides Panoramic Stereo Imaging

JBL's high-definition imaging waveguide was created to provide an ultra-wide soundstage with precise stereo imaging for the most immersive listening experience. The waveguide evenly distributes high frequencies to a wide area, enhancing the sense of space and depth. The result is a panoramic soundscape where every sonic detail can be clearly heard.

5" Woven Kevlar Woofer and 1" Soft-Dome Tweeter

At the heart of the 305P MKII is a 5" woven Kevlar woofer and 1" soft-dome tweeter. The rigid, lightweight Kevlar woofer produces tight bass response down to 43Hz. The soft-dome tweeter delivers crisp, extended highs up to 24kHz. Together, they provide a balanced frequency range ideal for any studio application from mixing and mastering to multimedia creation.

Bi-Amplified for Optimal Frequency Separation

The 305P MKII features a bi-amplified design with dedicated amplification for the woofer and tweeter. This allows for precise tuning of each driver and prevents intermodulation distortion. The end result is a clear, articulate sound with an expansive dynamic range.

Versatile Connectivity and Control

On the rear input panel, the 305P MKII offers balanced XLR and 1/4" TRS inputs as well as an unbalanced RCA input. The TRS and XLR inputs accept line level signals for connecting audio interfaces, mixers and preamps. RCA inputs can connect CD players and other consumer audio devices. Input sensitivity switches toggle between +4dBu and –10dBV. There is also an HF trim control to adjust the tweeter level, allowing you to tune the speaker's frequency response to your room's acoustics.

Stop doom searching. These are the ones.

I spent hours looking for a replacement set of studio monitors, since one of my M-Audio BX8a monitors finally bit the dust after 10+ years. Since my latest home studio space is smaller, I decided 5-inch monitors would fit the bill perfectly. I then began the journey of YouTube reviews, which ultimately led to me narrowing in on these 3: JBL 305p, PreSonus Eris E5, and Harbinger's new SM505 monitors. When I made it to the store, Eris were not available to test. However, the Harbingers were actually great! But wasn't a fan of the price point, and let's face it--recoconizable brands just give a certain "feel". Now, the true testimony was that I listened to ALL the 5" models they had in the store (including Yamaha, Adam Audio, and more). But when I played my music through the JBLs though?...WOW. They just hit different. For anyone that's married, it's like you saw that man/woman and just knew this was the one. You gotta hear them in person and you'll see. Looks: May be a love/hate for some, but I can tell you, in person, the glossy look is both modern and classy, and sets them apart from the others. This DOES matter as you'll be starting at them for hours on hours! And they may be one of the first things clients/visitors look at. KRK are screaming yellow, Yamahas have that "NS-10" look which is kinda cool, Adam Audio have that cute gold ribbon, all the rest just sort of "blend in" or look "average". These JBLs are a perfect fit for my studio, where the monitor face has that sleek, techie look. (See pic) I particularly love how they reflect the LEDs I have in my setup--which sort of blends them right into the family! Sound: I spent an ample amount of time tuning them to my space with the controls on the back. I thought I was fighting an uphill battle until after all the fiddling, shifting on the stands, etc., they hit a sweet spot and sounded like pure golden bliss. There's enough clout online to get specifics on specs and etc., so I'll just say: All the good things you'll read on how big, silky and full they sound are confirmed and true in my humble opinion. Cons: *Hiss from the speaker/tweeter? Psh, I checked ALL the monitors at GC, and they ALL had the same amount of noise while at rest. Became a non-issue for me at that point. Plus, there are tools I can plug into if it ever gets to me wanting a nearly impossible "100% quiet" speaker at rest. Felt this was worth mentioning since static/hiss comes up a lot in threads. *The look may not be for some, but that's 100% personal preference. I like it though. * No built-in crossover for subwoofer pairing, but not a deal breaker--especially if you don't plan on using one. *These weren't "set em' on the stands and have perfect sound image", but then again, that's not truly common with ANY monitor, in my experience. * I fear one day, maybe years from now, that laminate on the MDF may peel. Hopefully it will be within the warranty period and covered by JBL. They look great for now though, for sure! CONSLUSION: Look no further, I can say these are the ones. Zero buyer's remorse, and they are worth the buy even at full price. That said, I would definitely buy them NEW, because I'd hate to have gotten these with scratches on that beautiful glossy finish... Lol! So what are you waiting for? Grab a pair, and just return them if they are not your taste! But stop doom searching--you've got music to listen to and/or make. 😉

Nice sounds speakers with annoying idle hiss

I bought a pair of these after the rave reviews of the previous model 305s. They do sound good and I'm enjoying listening to all kinds of music through them without any fatigue at all. The only problem is that there is a very annoying amplifier hiss coming through the tweeters even when there is no audio connection at all, just the power cable. Some people say theirs are dead silent, but I'm my ears are a couple of feet from the speakers and I can hear the hiss over a somewhat noisy NAS and a big box PC with fans blowing. It's not a "loud" hiss, but it's loud enough that I can hear it even when the room isn't completely silent. Seems this is just part of the design though. Not sure I can live with it or not. I'm going to give it a few more days to decide.

You would need 1/4 cables to connect from the Focusrite Scarlett Solo. Please note that this is just one monitor and not a pair of monitors.

I am going to use these in a recording studio setting with a computer and a DAW. So, with "computer speakers" the speakers are shielded so the magnet on the speaker will not interfere or damage your computer so you don't have to worry about how close the speakers are to your computer or external hard drives.
Any idea how far these need to be placed away from computers and hard drives?
Thank you

Typically a couple feet away and you should be safe. I ended up getting a workstation desk with the upper shelves and the compartment below for the computer tower and it's worked out great. But typically a couple feet should be fine.

You would need to get a power voltage converter in order to use with higher voltage requirements.
