You can us it to make dampening rings...
This thing works like a charm for cutting a port hole in your reso head. You can cut anywhere from a 2" hole up to a 10" hole. The blade is good and sharp and cuts like butter. If you own a cutting mat I'd suggest using it, cardboard as a cutting surface doesn't work so good. Have you ever tried to purchase an 8" dampening ring? You can't because none of the big brands manufacture one. I used an old clear single ply head, cut perfect 8" dampening ring and the best part is you can cut it any width you want for different levels of dampening. I highly recomend this cutter if youre trying to cut a hole in any head for any reason.

First, I used this to cut the hole, which got off track when the hole got about half way cut, causing the pin to slip and the cutter got off track. I then traced and cut the hole as good as I could. I then purchased their port hole ring product to help cover up the little inconsistencies of the hole. It would have looked good if the pieces snapped together easy. I used their recommendation of using a flat head, which the product states be careful so the blade doesn't slip and puncture the bass drum. I'm a pretty big guy and used a lot of force and could not get the two to snap together. I eventually had to apply so much pressure, then inevitable happened and it slipped. The head didn't get punctured, but it did dent it. Not good for a brand new drum head.

This is the cheapest alternative to the Gibraltar hole cutter and it's been great! I lost my old one so I got a new one and it makes perfect holes every time! Make sure you're on a hard smooth surface. I usually cut a thin cardstock using this cutter to see how big the hole will be and where to place it. Using that circle, place it where you want it then you can punch the center point. Get rid of the circle then flip the drum head and cut from the inside. Blade is nice and sharp. Will buy this again if i need another!
Works well, but could be improved.

This was my first time cutting a port in a resonant head with a tool like this. It works well, but does require a good amount of consistent pressure to get a "clean" cut all the way around. The pin on the cutter that marked the center of the port is very small and popped out near the end of the trace. I ended up having to clean up the edge on that particular portion with a precision knife. Not a huge deal, but it's definitely worth mentioning.
Perfecty!

Follow the directions! Use a cardboard piece underneath the head, placed on a HARD surface where you are cutting the hole. Push one hand firmly on the tool (where the center pin is) to set the pin / anchor and use the other hand to put medium pressure on the cutter / roller. Go back and forth around the circle to be cut, use more caution as you get to the end (where the circle is almost cut through, completely). Bingo, your done...
Works great, highly recommended.
