Overview

Since it's introduction almost 20 years ago, The Special-II has met the needs of countless musicians with its combination of Les Paul features, great tone and affordability. The Special II Plus Top Limited Edition Electric Guitar Made with a flamed maple top, mahogany body, bolt-on mahogany neck, smooth 22-fret rosewood fingerboard, this baby is every bit as handsome as its uptown cousins.

Providing the sizzle and snarl that you can only get from humbuckers is a 650R (neck) and 700T (bridge) pickup combo. You'll be amazed how these U.S.A. designed pickups with their high-output magnets add more highs with increased definition and no muddiness. Slightly over-wound, the hotter 700T bridge pickup is smooth but can give you a little extra scream or growl when you need it while never losing its rich combination of enhanced lows and crystal clear highs.

Wow, this is a great guitar for the money. I spent some time deciding on which guitar to buy and after a lot of research I bought the Plus top Limited edition Les Paul Special II and I'm glad I did. I purchased the guitar over Thanksgiving and they were sold out at the store so I had it shipped to my home and the minute I took it out of the packing I knew I had made the right decision. The finish on the guitar is really good and even though it's made in China the attention to detail is all there. The flamed maple top really makes this guitar stand out, much better than the regular finish. Epiphone evidently took the time to ensure that everything was manufactured in accordance with their specs and it doesn't disappoint. I'm an intermediate player and own a Fender and Yamaha acoustic and this guitar is a wonderful addition since it has it's own unique sound. The low E string doesn't buzz at all which is a welcome relief from my Fender which always has.. The guitar does not weigh as much as I thought it would, probably under 10 lbs and it's just a real comfortable size guitar. This is my first guitar with humbucking pickups and I noticed the difference right away. There is no buzz/hum and when you flip the switch over to treble or rhythm it produces a real sweet tone. Crank up your amp and it's a treat! The neck is easy to play and the guitar just feels right with no excess weight. Don't let the price steer you away from this one as it's worth every penny. Buy it and enjoy!!

Well, I might as well write a review on this guitar to help other potential buyers out. If you are thinking about buying this guitar, all I can honestly say is go ahead and get it but realize one thing.....you WILL need to do a setup and possible pickup replacement. I bought this guitar in the sunburst color because they only had one blue one and it was in a store. I don't know about the rest of you but I am NOT going to pay full price on a guitar that is in the store and everyone had handled. If I am going to pay full price, then I want a new one in the box. Now besides all of that, on with the review..... The Guitar plays fine after a setup. Neck, pickup height, and intonation adjustments. You know, basic stuff. After playing it thru a solid state amp and playing it thru a tube amp, I come to realize that the stock pickups were in dire need of replacement to make this guitar sound great. I bought the Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set. SH-2 Jazz model at the neck and SH-4 model at the bridge. I also had a guitar tech wire it for coil splitting, install push/pull pots at the vol and tone, and install a switchcraft jack. Now this guitar sounds GREAT! After these mods, I couldn't be happier with the guitar and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg to do them. Like I said at the beginning, you will have to do a setup and possible pickup replacement to get this guitar to play and sound the way you want it to. Other than all of this, the frets and the overall fit and finish are good. Hope this review helps.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Plus Limited Edition Electric Guitar:

I've been playing guitar for 12 years. I've owned a couple dozen guitars in that time, including a Gibson and a couple Fenders. This guitar is right on par with my Gibson.

I should start out by saying that these guitars can be hit-or-miss. I ordered one online from Guitar Center, and when I got it there were cracks in the neck near the headstock, indicating it was probably dropped. I played that one for a while and it didn't feel all that great, and it sounded even worse. On top of that, the body was a lot heavier than the neck; it always felt like it wanted to fall off of my lap. That guitar was made in Indonesia; when I took it to GC to exchange it, they gave me one that was made in China (same guitar, different factory). The "made in China" one is fantastic. It is super comfortable to play and doesn't have the balance issues. It also sounds a lot better.

I am really big on modding my guitars; I always change out electronics, pickups, hardware, etc. I haven't found anything on this guitar that I want to change out. It sounds and looks great as-is. I rather like the Epiphone pickups that come with it; they have a really nice bite to them. Keep in mind that the pickups are VERY hot; this guitar got crunchy even on the clean channel.

I opened up the back and found they used full-sized Alpha pots (not mini-pots to save money). The leads for the pickups were left long for whatever reason.

I've always avoided Epiphone guitars up until now, thinking they were just the "cheap Gibson" alternatives (Epiphone is owned by Gibson) And it's true that Gibson does save their best stuff for the Gibson line. But I am finding that Epiphone is a great guitar company in its own right.

If you covered up the headstock and asked me how much this guitar cost, I would probably say in the range of $400-700. It is currently one of my two favorite guitars, tied with my Gibson SG.

I bought this to practice with and eventually start jamming. Too many years gone by without playing. I had Fenders before but this Epiphone feels and sounds great. The set up was good right out of the box and the finish on it looks great! I do think I will upgrade the strings pretty soon. All in all...a great deal at a good price!

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Plus Limited Edition Electric Guitar:

Just bought this one in black a few days ago. Needed a cheap guitar for dragging around here and there. I have a new Gibson Les Paul Studio, but kinda scared to take it out of the house. This Epi fits the bill great!! Feel good, great action and balance. Had to have the salesman open about 4 or 5 to find one with a good neck. Most were back bowed really bad. Other than that, the fit and finish is pretty good for the price, Sounds pretty good out of the box, but better strings and pickups should make it much better. It's cheap enough to wail on and not be worried about anything. Time will tell about reliability, but Epi makes pretty decent guitars. Just check the neck and play it before you take it home.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Plus Limited Edition Electric Guitar:

I've had this guitar for about a month now and I'm loving it more and more! I don't have the money to buy expensive guitars, so this is the most I've spent on a guitar and I am pleased with my purchase. I'm in a local band and I mostly play rhythm guitar, so for me this guitar works great. The action is awesome and I really like the weight of the guitar. It's not too heavy and it's not too light. It does not feel like or play like a cheap guitar. Besides changing the strings, I've left it alone and it's becoming my favorite guitar to play live. I highly recommend this guitar for beginners or for someone who loves to play loud distorted guitar without all the bells and whistles.

            Not Perfect But Still Awesome

            By

            from Storrs, CT

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Plus Limited Edition Electric Guitar:

I travel a lot and wanted the cheapest guitar I could find (that was still playable) to take through airports in a padded bag so I could jam at the hotel all week. I found this amazingly bright sounding gem that beat out the other guitars I was looking at because it was $149.00 in a sale GC had running a few months ago and it played better than some that cost a lot more. I play it every day and still like it for many reasons. It's much lighter than my Gibson Les Paul Studio Deluxe (60's next), sounds great through my Yamaha THR-10C with a good range of tones for such a cheap guitar, and, like I just said, it's cheap. Cons (Title does say not perfect)... One of the tuning pegs was not mounted straight and it's kind of a pain to change strings because the string winder hits the head. Terrible fret buzz on fret 16. When I bend the string it goes away so I don't think that fret is level. Not sure if I can raise the action to get rid of it. I consider it my travel beater so not really crazy about it being perfect and will do a setup on it when I have time. Everything else is good. It comes in a variety of really tacky colors but I found a transparent blue one that actually looks pretty cool. I would highly recommend this based on the quality to price ratio. GC sells a little travel guitar that seemed like absolute junk and cost a few hundred more, and this fits fine in the overhead bin of an airplane. Just take your time checking it out and you can avoid the things I found, just have them rip open another box and try another one. Like I said, not perfect, but still worth 5 stars based on the sound I get out if it together with the price.

            Great Guitar After Setup

            By

            from Storrs, CT

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Plus Limited Edition Electric Guitar:

I got this for traveling (on-the-road consultant) so I could make good use of my time when away from home. It was on sale for about $150. Because it was so cheap it didn't seem to make sense to pay $60 (almost half the price of the instrument) for a setup. There was some buzz in a few places and the action was higher than I like it, but I wrote if off as the price of owning a cheapo guitar. Out of curiosity I read up on doing a setup myself (getting a new Tele this week) and thought I would practice on the Cheap-o-phone. I have to take that back now. WOW! Feels great and sounds nice too. I can't be too critical about components because it was really cheap, but it now feels as good as any other good guitar I have. ...that is more important to me than how it sounds because I only want it for dragging through airports and getting bounced around. Although I got it to be disposable, I will really miss it if it gets ruined. Very playable and good looking guitar for the price. What I Had To Do: Loosen truss rod, lower pickup interfering with high E string, lower the bridge for better action. Intonation was fine. Pros: Cheap, sounds good clean or with gain, pretty light, looks nice (Translucent Blue, the other ones look like toys to me) Cons: Pickups are a little muddy but fine for practicing, one of the tuners was mounted to the head crooked and the string winder hits the head when winding that string. All stuff I can live with. Highly recommend
