Overview

Since its introduction almost 20 years ago, The Special-II has met the needs of countless musicians with its combination of Les Paul features, great tone and affordability. The Special II Plus Top Limited Edition Electric Guitar is made with a flamed maple top, mahogany body, bolt-on mahogany neck, smooth 22-fret rosewood fingerboard, and is every bit as handsome as its uptown cousins.

Providing the sizzle and snarl that you can only get from humbuckers is a 650R (neck) and 700T (bridge) pickup combo. You'll be amazed how these U.S.A. designed pickups with their high-output magnets add more highs with increased definition and no muddiness. Slightly over-wound, the hotter 700T bridge pickup is smooth but can give you a little extra scream or growl when you need it while never losing its rich combination of enhanced lows and crystal clear highs.

Check the drop-down menu to the right to select colors and/or other options.

Wow, this is a great guitar for the money. I spent some time deciding on which guitar to buy and after a lot of research I bought the Plus top Limited edition Les Paul Special II and I'm glad I did. I purchased the guitar over Thanksgiving and they were sold out at the store so I had it shipped to my home and the minute I took it out of the packing I knew I had made the right decision. The finish on the guitar is really good and even though it's made in China the attention to detail is all there. The flamed maple top really makes this guitar stand out, much better than the regular finish. Epiphone evidently took the time to ensure that everything was manufactured in accordance with their specs and it doesn't disappoint. I'm an intermediate player and own a Fender and Yamaha acoustic and this guitar is a wonderful addition since it has it's own unique sound. The low E string doesn't buzz at all which is a welcome relief from my Fender which always has.. The guitar does not weigh as much as I thought it would, probably under 10 lbs and it's just a real comfortable size guitar. This is my first guitar with humbucking pickups and I noticed the difference right away. There is no buzz/hum and when you flip the switch over to treble or rhythm it produces a real sweet tone. Crank up your amp and it's a treat! The neck is easy to play and the guitar just feels right with no excess weight. Don't let the price steer you away from this one as it's worth every penny. Buy it and enjoy!!

Well, I might as well write a review on this guitar to help other potential buyers out. If you are thinking about buying this guitar, all I can honestly say is go ahead and get it but realize one thing.....you WILL need to do a setup and possible pickup replacement. I bought this guitar in the sunburst color because they only had one blue one and it was in a store. I don't know about the rest of you but I am NOT going to pay full price on a guitar that is in the store and everyone had handled. If I am going to pay full price, then I want a new one in the box. Now besides all of that, on with the review..... The Guitar plays fine after a setup. Neck, pickup height, and intonation adjustments. You know, basic stuff. After playing it thru a solid state amp and playing it thru a tube amp, I come to realize that the stock pickups were in dire need of replacement to make this guitar sound great. I bought the Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set. SH-2 Jazz model at the neck and SH-4 model at the bridge. I also had a guitar tech wire it for coil splitting, install push/pull pots at the vol and tone, and install a switchcraft jack. Now this guitar sounds GREAT! After these mods, I couldn't be happier with the guitar and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg to do them. Like I said at the beginning, you will have to do a setup and possible pickup replacement to get this guitar to play and sound the way you want it to. Other than all of this, the frets and the overall fit and finish are good. Hope this review helps.

I always liked the Les Paul model guitar. Eppiphone is a good brand, now owned by the Gibson company. It may not be a Gibson, but is not too far removed from it.

Semi Novice. I played in local bands back in the 60's, but gave it up, as I grew up. Decided to pick it up again, after 45 years.
Neck was very straight, and the action set to specs. I lowered the action to the minimum, without any problems.
Also bought a Fender Mustang I to practice on, with headphones.
Fingers are soft, but it's starting to come back.

I've never played much professionally, in the early 80's I played for a local band, The Country Outlaws. I've been playing off but mostly on since I was 8 years old when my grandmother (who played) bought me my first guitar. You know the one, plastic with fishing line for strings. LOL Being able to play guitar has been therapy for me ever since a head-on collision with a drunk driver in 08' which left me disabled but still able to play my musical instruments. Thank you Lord ! Mine is the blue transparent color and I love it!

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Plus Limited Edition Electric Guitar:

I use this guitar for just about everything - but I tend to use it more in the studio than the others!!! (Music Man, Charvel, Robin) - It was given to me as a gift sometime ago. It is so terribly easy to play. But I trade out whenever I'm doing a lot of chording, especially on the lower part of the neck. This Epi has a tendency to be slightly out of tune on different parts of the neck - makes a big difference in the studio. But, all in all, I love it -

I have always wanted a LP.. So when these went on sale for 150$, I said WTH.. It feels great, very balanced weight, beautiful finish, keeps in tune very well, humbuckers allow for great distortion while also plays very bright and vibrant with out. I have seen many reviews on this guitar from pros and youtube reviews, all reassuring that what I have bought is quality. I love it.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Plus Limited Edition Electric Guitar:

Guitar is great but was not new as advertised. Didn't even come in original box. I think it was a demo. Had a few scratches and some other cosmetic blemishes. Strings even had some corrosion. I would have returned but really liked the color and they didn't have any more. Like I said, the guitar sounds great and feels nice after changing strings and lowering the action. Guitar Center should have been ashamed of what they did on this order. Never apologized but I will say they did make it right after I complained.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Plus Limited Edition Electric Guitar:

I travel a lot and keep a place FL where I spend a few months each year. I was in the market for an inexpensive guitar that I could leave there so I would not have to carry one of my vintage guitars with me when I travel. Overall the feel and sound of the guitar are fine, especially given the cost. It needs to be set up, which I did myself and I am pleased with how it sounds and feels when you play it. The two open-coil humbuckers sound fine - no need to swap them out. I am just using for practice but it certainly is good enough for jamming and performing. Its definitely a good value for the money.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special II Plus Limited Edition Electric Guitar:

I've been playing guitar for 12 years. I've owned a couple dozen guitars in that time, including a Gibson and a couple Fenders. This guitar is right on par with my Gibson.

I should start out by saying that these guitars can be hit-or-miss. I ordered one online from Guitar Center, and when I got it there were cracks in the neck near the headstock, indicating it was probably dropped. I played that one for a while and it didn't feel all that great, and it sounded even worse. On top of that, the body was a lot heavier than the neck; it always felt like it wanted to fall off of my lap. That guitar was made in Indonesia; when I took it to GC to exchange it, they gave me one that was made in China (same guitar, different factory). The "made in China" one is fantastic. It is super comfortable to play and doesn't have the balance issues. It also sounds a lot better.

I am really big on modding my guitars; I always change out electronics, pickups, hardware, etc. I haven't found anything on this guitar that I want to change out. It sounds and looks great as-is. I rather like the Epiphone pickups that come with it; they have a really nice bite to them. Keep in mind that the pickups are VERY hot; this guitar got crunchy even on the clean channel.

I opened up the back and found they used full-sized Alpha pots (not mini-pots to save money). The leads for the pickups were left long for whatever reason.

I've always avoided Epiphone guitars up until now, thinking they were just the "cheap Gibson" alternatives (Epiphone is owned by Gibson) And it's true that Gibson does save their best stuff for the Gibson line. But I am finding that Epiphone is a great guitar company in its own right.

If you covered up the headstock and asked me how much this guitar cost, I would probably say in the range of $400-700. It is currently one of my two favorite guitars, tied with my Gibson SG.
