  • great all-around pair of hi-hats

As reviewed by A. Peters on 3/6/2008

I have had my New Beats for a little over 2 years now and have loved them ever since. Although they are heavier than I would care for, they do have a balanced sound. These will work for anything from jazz combos to rock. They have a nice strong chick sound that will always be heard unlike some hi-hats I've seen. The only hi-hats more versatile than these would be the new Armand versions which are just lighter in weight. New Beats have gotten heavier over the years but always work well.

I have been playing for 20+ years now and have not had the opportunity lay down the money for great cymbals. My wife finally went out of her way and bought me these as an early Father's Day gift and they are everything I have always wanted. Great stick sounds and phenominal sizzle and the chick when just playing with your feet is crystal. If one word is to used to describe these, to me it would be "clarity". Pricey, but like the old saying goes; you get what you paid for.

  • The best pair of hi-hats, hands down

As reviewed by drummerD on 10/2/2006

The Zildjian New Beats are considered the classic, versatile hi-hat. These can be used in straight ahead rock, funky jazz, hard metal, or soft ballads. Basically, the New Beats are designed to perform in just about any condition. When I play a gig with different styles of music, the New Beats always make their way into the cymbal bag. The bottom is slightly heavy, providing some weight and projection. The top is about an average weight hi-hat cymbal, allowing for a range of dynamics and expressions from a slightly open sizzle to fully closed tick to wide open thrash. These cymbals project without being overly loud. The New Beats have been the standard for decades, and I see no reason why that shouldn't continue. Whether recording or live, the New Beats are one of the most versatile and satisfying pairs of cymbals I've played.
