A direct humbucker retrofit pickup with three distinct voices: full-size humbucker, P-90, and Rails.

The ground-breaking Seymour Duncan SHPR-2b P-Rails delivers 3 distinct tonal voices in a single guitar pickup: a fat humbucker, a beefy P-90, and a traditional single-coil Strat tone. This Seymour Duncan pickup is truly for guitar players who want it all and it's specifically designed to provide a punchier, more aggressive tone in the bridge position.

The Seymour Duncan P-Rails Hot pickup is armed with a beefed up coil wind and 2 powerful Alnico 8 magnets-which rival ceramic magnets in power but maintain the sweet sustain Alnico is known for. The P-90 coil in the P-Rails Hot pickup is wound with a special wire, selected for output and clarity. This P-90 is loud! The rail mode is hotter thanks to the power of the Alnico 8, and the series humbucker mode is huge.

Seymour Duncan P-Rails Hot pickups are a direct humbucker retrofit and can be used in any guitar set up for a traditional humbucker or Trembucker spacing. To maximize P-Rails Hot's unique splitting capabilities and to get the most tonal versatility, Seymour Duncan recommends using them in tandem with a standard Seymour Duncan P-Rails (sold separately) in the neck position with a 2-way switch (push-pull or mini-toggle) to get both humbucker and P-90 tones. Use a 3-way switch (DPDT on-off-on) to bring in the single-coil Rail tones. Or, for the ultimate in versatility, use Seymour Duncan's Triple Shot switching mounting ring (sold separately).

Normally, in humbucking mode, P-Rails are wired in series for a high-output sound that works great for classic rock and heavier tones. However, when wired in parallel, the coil mismatch produces very usable moderate-output humbucker tones with less of the phase cancellation often associated with standard parallel-wired humbuckers.

Seymour Duncan P-Rails Hot pickups are recommended for all styles of music. They are built in the USA at Seymour Duncan's Santa Barbara, California workshop.

  • What I Expected

As reviewed by Ramon Delfin on 6/26/2013

I really like these pickups. I have them for the neck and bridge. For the guitar I put them in, it does what I wanted it to do. For the Schector C-1 I have it made it a much more versatile guitar. It really does do what the pickups are said to do. It makes my guitar have the option of 3 guitars and I was very impressed. I already have a les paul, and I like the les paul to do what it?s supposed to do for my taste which is to favor rock music. I just like it to have the straight humbucker JB sound. But for this C-1 I wanted it to be more versatile and because of these pickups, it now is and to me, it sounds great. The notes have strength and a good audio sound. They are also loud if needed to be. So if you?re looking for versatility, these pickups are the right ones to choose.

  • hot?

As reviewed by Brian on 12/6/2010

I expected a higher output from his pickup. Since it is an actual humbucker I figured it would be comparably hot to the output of the hot rail single coil that people put in strats. Doesn't cut through nearly as well. Even when you split to the single coil, still doesn't compare. Also, the tamber is too bright. Do NOT use this pickup with basswood guitars. I will say that I think this pickup would sound good in a guitar with a mahogany body. The warmth would tone the brightness down. The splitting options work well with the triple shot (found this the best quality of these pickups.) Really like the neck pickup version of this. The output being normal tones down the brightness of this pickup.

  • A Good Pickup

As reviewed by iankendall on 3/1/2011

I put this and a standard neck P-rail in my Les Paul classic (Mahogany, maple top) a few months ago, along with the Triple Shot mounting rings (highly reccommended) and they sounded pretty good. There are four different wirings to choose from: P90, Rail, Series, and Parallel. To address a common misperception, these pickups will not make your guitar sound like four different guitars- although it does make a difference. The P90 is nice and twangy, probably being the lowest output of the four. The Rail is the highest output and very muddy, so I rarely use it. The series humbucker is also muddy, and sounds pretty bad compared to the other three. But the Parallel humbucker is where this pickup really shines. It combines the best of the rail and the P90 into that mid-output, sloppy-but-tight sound that really gives single notes clarity. The Parallel and the P90 are the only tones I'll miss, as the stock pickups are going back in tomorrow.
