The bass sound I've always wanted

By Dave from Hayward

from Hayward, Ca

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

I've had some decent amps in the past, including my original SVT from the early 70's, Sunn, Fender, and GK. I had been looking for a serious upgrade and was looking at the SVT4PRO and the Ampeg 810. But when I tried it out, even the guys that worked there had trouble getting it all hooked up right and then trying to get a good sound from it. I decided right then that it wasn't the head for me, because I'm not too great at playing with all the electronics and everything - I just want to hook up, make a few adjustments and then play away. So I went to the bigger store in San Jose and plugged into the SVT3PRO with the 610 cab. Without making any adjustments at all, it was the bass sound of my dreams and I joked with the sales guy, who plays bass, by the way, that I'd take it after just 5 or 6 notes played. We still tried out the Mark Bass amp that he said was just as good or better than Ampeg but with very light cabs. The Mark Bass sounded pretty good, but he had to fool around with the controls a lot and the cabs were ugly, with bright yellow logos that really turned me off. I know it's supposed to be just the sound, but I like equipment that doesn't stand out too much - only sounds killer. So I went back to the Ampeg setup and that was it. I read one of the other reviews where this guy said the 3PRO and the 610hlf was a match made in heaven, and I agree. The 3PRO has all the tone control of the 4PRO but with much less hassle to get that sound. The only advantage I see with the 4PRO is that you have the power to add cabs later, where with the 3PRO you're pretty much stuck with your first choice of cabs if you pick one like the 610hlf that takes 600w. But seriously, it is way more than enough for any small to medium show, and the larger shows almost always have huge PA to run through. I can't stop practicing now and the main thing I noticed right away was that every single note on my bass has that same great bassy tone, a consistent tone, instead of giving up a bit of tone if you play high on the neck or want to pound the low E - it's all very clear and bassy. It's like I sound twice as good on the same old lines I've been playing. By now you figure I work there or something, but I just wanted to get my opinion in and did I say I'm thrilled with my new amp? I even got a nice deal on it so get to it and don't buy before you try out this combo!

-A Perfect Amp-

By Tjones

from Nashville, TN

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

I, like most bassists, have gotten to the point of upgrading from the mid-range equipment to the high end stuff. I purchased the Ampeg SVT 4x10 cab and have been looking to get rid of my weak Hartke 3500. I thought long and hard about getting an expensive SVT Classic but someone talked me into the SVT-3. Hands down, this amp is amazing. I swear this amp will blow down a house. I am battling "2" Mesa Triple Rectifiers and this amp pushes right through them. Simply amazing. The tone is great, my bank account isn't depleated and I couldn't be happier with this product. If you don't want to lug around an 8x10 cab but want raw low end power, the SVT-3 with the SVT 4x10 is the answer. I highly recommend it.

Great hybrid, if you don't get all-tube SVT

By Spazzmathsvt

from Washington, D.C. area

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

This head sounds good because it has a full 5 tube pre-amp. I especially like the fact that you can crank the "tube gain". This is a relatively warm and organic sound without a tube power amp/section. So if you don't want to get or buy (a more expensive) all tube SVT (or Orange, Hi-watt, or Fender), the Pro 3 really is not a bad option. But, all tube sound does (simply put) kill the Pro 3, can't really fake it. I do love the sharp, cutting mids and highs this amp produces regardless. The Pro 3 is really versatile tone-wise, the eq and range of this amp are really top notch. I use the Pro 3 as my back-up for my 70's SVT and have recorded with the Pro 3. I see a ton of these used by other players, and this amp sounds heads and shoulders better than any purely solid state head I've heard.

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

The 3 PRO sounds just like the SVT 2 PRO at lower volumes. You can get a good amount of the famous Ampeg Tube Growl, but don't expect the 3 PRO to growl like the SVT Classic or the 2 PRO. The 3 PRO is perfect for those who don't want the maintenance or weight of a Tube Amp, but still want the sound and feel of tubes. The price is quite high for a 450 watt amp, but you truly get what you paid for. Lastly, with the controls set correctly and a good cabinet, this amp can get VERY LOUD! Read the manual carefully.

Killer 450W Head

By SpectorDude

from Milwaukee, WI

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

I bought this amp almost on a whim. When it came down to it, it was either a GK or this. This amp is a LOUD 450 Watts. When I first got it home and hooked it up to my 4x10, I about blew the patio doors off my place. This amp has tons of bottom, and with some EQ tweaking, the mids and highs sing. Work very well with my active 5-string. Also, the size and weight, with tubes, is amazing. If you got the cash - get it.

FINALLY, Tone acheived!!!!

By B J.

from Green Bay, WI

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

I had been setting my sites on one of these for about a year, and finally got one! WOW!!!! It's a behemouth of power and tone!! I originally played SWR, but needed to upgrade. If you want the best, AMPEG IS IT!!! I play it with a Warwick Corvette through two SWR 4x10 and i noticed an immediate difference. My bandmates are exstatic about this purchase. It's very easy to set up and gives you a very good range of tone options, which with the 5 tone style choices, Bass, Mid, and Treble knobs, AND an EQ, and the ability to bring the EQ effect down or up! It's awesome!!!

Great amp but

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

This is really an awesome amp for any rock artist and even works great with jazz but just let me say that it cannot get a classic svt sound. In features I gave it a 4 because the mid selector is just that, only mids. It would be better if they had put in an overall frequency switch.

Can't Go Wrong

By Kyle

from Kansas City, KS

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

I recently got this amp as an upgrade from my Ampeg BA115 combo because I kept getting drowned out in practice. It sounds incredible through my SVT 4x10 Classic cab with a Fender Jazz bass. The tube preamp gives it the warm rich tube tone that serious bass players are looking for and the 450W solid state power amp will make sure that no one will be able to drown you out. This thing is a beast! There is also an insane number of features so you can dial in the exact tone you are looking for to get the perfect sound for your situation and style. The graphic EQ allows you to shape the exact sound you want which I love. The possibilities with this amp are almost endless. You really can't go wrong with this amp for the money. Its a serious rig for those players that want great tone, power, and features but don't want to break the bank on an all tube SVT Classic. Ampeg is the only brand of bass amps I will ever buy again because their tone is unmatchable.

SVT 3 Pro Review

By Kinkaid

from Denver CO

Comments about Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head:

I picked this up about 2 years ago so I've really had a chance to live with it and use it in many situations. It is definitely a superior piece of equipment. I also own and play through a 59 Fender Bassman 5o (Great tube sound but nowhere near the power of the svt), and a tuck and roll Kustom. The svt is by far my fav. I run it through an svt 4x10 up top and an svt1x15 underneath and get a great range of sound, fat, low bottoms, clear crisp highs, and plenty of punch in the middle. My biggest and really only complaint would be the occasional interception of radio signals. my fender tube dose this as well and i've experienced it in other tube amps. In practice situations any worrys of not cutting through are put right to bed, even during double bass drum blasts and obnoxious guitar players. This power makes it suitable for pretty much all gigs and for the larger ones(6-12 hundred people) it has a direct line out for the p.a. so no more little box to fool with. and on stage with the right speakers you will feel it, so monitors are not so important. Unless for what ever reason you need more power I would recommend this amp to any one. Their also tough as hell mine took a drop from the top of the stack when some sound guy decided it would be easer to just push the whole thing from the bottom I plugged it in and it started right up. So in summation. Great range of sound, plenty of power, Fat , clear, and crisp, lots of pro extras five stars.
