If your not craftsperson,Then this will be complicated.

Comments about Martin Build Your Own Guitar Kit:

When i bought this set, i was confident of building it.But while building it I was missing other items to build it and had problems playing it when it was completed. The neck snap off with a week or so and had to send it back. But when they sent me a new one,I had to go back to Guitar Center and get my money back. So,If your not a skilled luthier i would not recommend you this product.

Sounds as nice as it looks

By Kevin Walter

from Atlanta. GA

Comments about Martin Build Your Own Guitar Kit:

I should say, sounds easier than it looks. It's tough. No joke. I have done fine woodworking in the past and own many of the required tools and still needed special scrapers, files, glues, knives and laminating trim bits. The workmanship will definitely show if you fast-path or cut any step. I skipped the body fill and scrape process mainly because after 2 months and about 80 hours of work, I wanted to play my guitar, soon. So the 8 coats of lacquer I applied could not fill the top and back wood grain. Now I occasionally rake my fingernails across the sound board to remind me of what an extra hour or two cost me in quality. Fitting the neck is critical. Get it right. I checked out The Luthiers Handbook from my library and really got into the fine points of how a guitar works and my first reference when moving to the next step. I was just floored when I put strings on for the first. Couldn't believe how crisp and resonate the sound was. After two years now, I have not had to adjust the truss rod at all and only required minimal fret work to eliminate buzz. And wonderfully tight action. Get the neck right. BTW...the manufacturer would not turn me on to a logo decal so I created my own brand, North Star guitar. Enjoy.

Buyer beware

By Tom Jordan

from Santa Barbara, CA

Comments about Martin Build Your Own Guitar Kit:

The first review is very right on. In order to make an instrument you need some space to work, a workbench or worktable, a set of clamps and some background knowledge so that you don't ruin the kit by doing something wrong. It seems like a great way to have a Martin guitar for hundreds of dollars less than the fully assembled item in the store. There is nothing to describe the frustration of paying over four hundred dollars for a kit, ruining it and then buying the same guitar after that for over a thousand. If you can't afford the guitar of your dreams wait till you can and enjoy the music you can make on the one you have now.
