  • A Great Compact System

As reviewed by Joe Sabato on 3/12/2009

This is a compact system that is very clean and detailed even at very high SPL?s; it sounds like a much larger speaker. The highs are crisp without being harsh even in near field use. They do not have a lot of low bass, but what is there is clean. It appears that JBL chose to limit the bandwidth to gain efficiency and low distortion at high output levels; a good trade for me since I have a sub that I can use to fill in below their cutoff frequency if I want to. They are also versatile; my primary use is with my PC, but I tried them with a keyboard and with a audiophile grade stereo preamp which made them sound even better. They offer a lot of quality for the price and I highly recommend them.

  • Excellence on a budget

As reviewed by MrRedPlanet206 on 8/23/2010

I've had these speakers for about a year now, worked very hard to earn the money for them. When I walked into the Guitar Center store they had sold out of the Bx5's I was interested in, but they had these on display... The guy played a James Brown song for me and I was sold. It sounded like there was a little band on top of the stand. I use these for Music Production (Primarily songwriting with Reason), Mixing vocals in Cubase, a bit of recording, and of course, kicking back and just enjoying music... they are very top notch, so clear and crispy, but please make sure you're connected correctly! At first I had these hooked up through a Radio Shack Component to 1/8" adapter (bad move). It sounded excellent when the adapter was okay, but since the connection was so fragile, there were a lot of pops and clicks... I thought it was the speakers, until I hooked them up through my Fast Track Pro, and I haven't had 1 problem since. They go pretty loud, they'll definitely annoy your neighbors at night. Highs are brilliant, and Bass is really nice, however, these are MONITORS, so if you really want to have the bass kicking, I'd recommend a sub woofer... They serve the purpose of Monitors immaculately and I'd recommend them to any body in need of some professionalism on a budget.

  • Good for the good times, but...

As reviewed by Zaki Woodyard on 10/7/2011

Quality wise, these speakers are great. The compact size and crystal clear clarity up and down the frequency range make them ideal for basement studios and the like. A little limited in high-volume performance but that's to be expected and is pretty much negligible as they're not meant for high-volume use; they're not party speakers. The big problem is the after-market support. I had a problem with my pair due to no fault of JBL but I needed a new power supply and of course, the speakers instruct you to "only use the supplied power supply." Well after sending multiple emails to JBL Pro trying to get a quote for a replacement and receiving no response, I decided to call the number on the JBL Pro website. The number was not in service. One of the most important things I look for in any of my Pro-Audio equipment is after-market support and this is where JBL fails. They're excellent speakers for the price, but if anything should ever happen to them, expect to buy yourself a new set. I've decided to replace mine with something from M-Audio as at least I know their support center actually exists.
