The term “folk instrument” is highly generic, and describes instruments that can be traced deep into a community's musical roots, and often cannot be associated with a single inventor, like the flute and mandolin, as well as modern instruments that have become closely associated with folk music, like the banjo and harmonica. Many musicians also associate the folk instrument category with exotic instruments that have lost popularity over time, or have not achieved a certain level of use in contemporary music. The category also includes instruments that require only basic manufacturing skills, and can be achieved by relatively simple means. Folk instruments can be drums or percussion oriented, stringed, or wind instruments.
