Before you read my review, you should know that I am primarily a guitarist and this is the first bass amp I have owned. I am however an experienced musician, and I know what a good sound is. Having said that, I can tell you that I've never had trouble finding a good tone with this amp (I use a Squier affinity PJ bass with it, which I have also written an review on). The three voicing buttons make this amp quite versatile, and I especially love the bright switch. The gain control is very responsive, and turning it up will add some bite to your tone, while turning it down will mellow it out. The 4 band EQ is also quite responsive, and its easy to dial in a good tone. The drive channel adds to the versatility of the amp, and is very responsive to the master gain control. I can't say it produces the best driven sound, but it's decent and a great feature nonetheless. Can you gig with it? It's certainly loud enough. I live in a fairly large house and with the master volume at around 9 o'clock you can hear the amp from outside, so I'd say you could use it for any small venues, and it could definitely be heard over a drummer at rehearsals. If you mic it up or use the line out directly to a PA, you could even use it at some larger venues. That being said, if you want an amp solely for practice and noise is an issue, I might opt for the Rumble 25. This also the lightest amp I have ever lifted, so transporting it to rehearsals/gigs would be an absolute breeze. How an amp this light can sound this powerful blows my mind. This is a great amp for beginners or experienced players looking for an amp to practice with and bring to small gigs. You can get almost any sound out of this, from vintage to modern, smooth clean to gritty drive. It's no 200W tube amp, but it still sounds great.

I went to Guitar Player to audition this amp as I am now a Senior player with a bad back. 18 lbs sounded really good to me. The sound is "not bad"....but the low notes were undefined and not up to my standards. I tried the Rumble 100 and it blew me away. The 100 is only 4 lbs heavier. For a meer $100 more you get a 12 inch Eminence Speaker(which makes a HUGE difference), an effects loop, and of course 60 more watts. The larger cabinet seems to have been engineered just right for that speaker....as it sounds deep and full at the volume I need....which at 1/4 volume drives a 20 piece Big Band. So FYI...before you pull the trigger on the 40, think twice about the 100......

Great bass to practice with! I thought this amp provided more tonal variety than its competitors. The overdrive channel is also a great feature and cuts through the mix when I am playing along to music.

Comments about Fender Rumble 40 1x10 40W Bass Combo Amp:

A long-time cover band bassist (since the 70s), I was looking for a small, lightweight bass amp with reasonable features and good sound for practice, low-volume rehearsals, and the occasional small club/coffeehouse performance. I'm very happy with the Rumble 40 - it has good EQ controls, a line out for pushing sound to a PA, the ability to input an external source for personal practice time (with speaker cutoff when using headphones), and an extremely lightweight cabinet. The 4-band EQ allows me to dial in the sound characteristics of each of my basses (Rickenbacker, MusicMan, Carvin). The amp also has an "overdrive" function, which to my ear creates a buzzy tone, but I find little use for it for the music I play. Above all, the cab is so incredibly lightweight that I can comfortably hold it at arm's length; when handing it to a friend while unloading my car he asked whether there was a speaker in the box. Yes there is, and it sounds great, surprisingly warm for such a lightweight rig. The only negative that I've found is that the bright switch adds a high-pitched background noise to the brighter tone, and that noise also happens to a lesser extent with the treble control. Overall, though, this is a warm-sounding, lightweight bass amp whose warm tone belies its small size.

Comments about Fender Rumble 40 1x10 40W Bass Combo Amp:

I'm a bored piano player who decided to pick up the bass guitar. I wanted an amp with enough power around the practice room but portable so I could take it to the living room or the patio. This amp fits the bill on both counts. Only 18 lbs.! Sounds amazing! Love the presets!
