  • Super-do-per X2

As reviewed by Richard McGuire on 2/15/2012

I've been waiting for Fender to develop a tube amp that combined the DSP effect features with the warmth of tube power that was light weight offering ease of portability! The X2 does it!!! Plus, the added "TAP" feature offers more flexibility for the EFXs... I feel it approaches "analog" sounds on the delay, tremolo, and chorus features. For me the "bonus" is the line out..why? because you can run the line out feature directly thru a PA system... the X2 really performs splendidly when doing that ...or...I run the line out into my old, but very much "alive" Princeton 65 DSP amp thus utilizing the 12" speaker which provides a great stereo sound. The "voice" feature is quite awesome... the amp models provide excellent representations of classic and modern Fender amplified stylizations. The X2 "vintage modified" surely owns up to its claim... and the price is very reasonable for what that little amp offers!!!

  • Great little amp

As reviewed by Oliver L. Thagard on 12/3/2012

You won't find a better amp for the money. The Bassman is my favorite setting, along with a little delay and reverb. Really nails that rockabilly sound. You could play small venues with this, but it's primarily a practice amp ( but a really good one ).

  • Power, Versatility, and Tone

As reviewed by Scott Williams on 4/14/2012

Like they say in the product Description: Power, Tone, and Versatility. This delivers all three in spades. I must confess, you should probably never rate equipment the first day you have it, but I've been on a tone search for an incredibly long time and I'm just way too excited about this amp and it's incredible features. And sometimes, you just know love when you see (hear) it. :) So that being said, I can say nothing for it's reliability although it seems pretty ruggedly built. Another review mentioned toy like knobs, but these seem pretty sturdy to me, maybe they have updated them since the other review was posted. Now there is a little caveat to this review, I'm currently using the combo version of the Super Champ X2 amp like a head, bypassing the internal 10" Fender "Special Design" Speaker. I just wanted the versatility of being able to play it as a combo if needed, play it with an extension cab, or 1/4' line out it if needed (not to mention the USB out for computer tweaking and recording). If you're planning on gigging with this amp as a combo, I'd plan on replacing the speaker with something that can handle a little more wattage because this one farts out pretty quickly when you give it some volume. That being said, this sexy little amp run through my Avatar 4x12 with Hellatones in it just sings and sings. Power: All the volume you'll ever need if you're planning on miking or running direct line out into the PA. Both Channels sound incredible when cranked fully through an external cabinet (as they should!) although I'll probably never (rarely) need this volume in a gig. But the cool thing is on the drive channel you don't really lose any of that fantastic cranked amp sound at lower volumes. In fact you can have that cranked amp sound at very low bedroom levels if that's what you need it to do. Great for practice and the gigs. I know it sounds like I work for Fender, I promise you I do not. :) Now the clean channel sounds unbelievable when cranked and loses a bit of that drive that it has in the upper volume range (6.5-10) but still goes into feedback with a full volume hum-bucking guitar and around 4-5 on the amp's volume knob when you let chords ring and sustain. The harmonics that jump out of this thing are just gorgeous. But believe me, there is plenty of headroom for beautiful sparkling cleans too. But the cleans are so much warmer than the Hot Rod Deluxe that I have had for 12 years. I should mention that I have a push/pull coil tap on my guitar which lets me switch from hum-bucking to single coil mode, so that adds to my own personal versatility of tone with this little beauty. This is one looker of an amp when you see it in person IMHO. It may look small next to the other Fender's in the store, but don't let that make you pass it by. Versatility: The way I ride on the volume knob of my guitar gives me excellent cleans with plenty of headroom when rolled back as well as a little bit of stank on the full end of the throttle on the clean channel. This thing responds fantastically to playing dynamics and picking attack style. I have yet to find a model on the channel 2 that I do not like and it has a ton of drive amp options. Most of channel 2's models respond well to the guitar volume control technique as well (except the very high gain ones). This, in my opinion, gives me a quasi 4 channel amplifier! Or at least four distinct sounds just with the use of one foot-switch and a guitar volume pot. No need for an overdrive or distortion pedal! Tone: Tone for days with this beast IMHO. Tone unfortunately is a completely subjective category for judgement. You be your own judge on this one. But for me it fits the bill perfectly and lets me nail, and I mean NAIL any style of music. Even the metal I hardly ever play. The built in effects are 10 times better than I expected and all easily controlled and adjusted and all are very musical. The tap tempo is your friend. :) If my X2 was lost, busted, or stolen I would replace it in a heart beat. I may even buy another one and run my whole rig in stereo or to have as a back up. This will be my main gigging amplifier. You just cannot beat the features and sound for the price of this amp. It outperforms all in it's own price range as well as many that are twice and three times as much. Go try one out, but plug it into a cab or just get the head! I should probably give it Four Stars for the crappy stock speaker, but it more than makes up for it with its tone when plugged into a good cabinet, so Five Stars it is!
