Overview

Epiphone presents the new Ltd. Ed. SG-Special-I, a great way for new players to get started on electric guitar at a price anyone can afford. The SG-Special-1 has the same classic “SG” tone, look, and feel that’s gone virtually unchanged over 50 years and players from all genres around the world recognize the “SG” as a one of the best and most distinctive electric guitars ever made. But seasoned pros will also love the new Ltd. Ed. SG Special-1 for its powerful Ceramic Open Coil humbuckers and smooth easy-to-play Mahogany SlimTaperTM neck.  Plus, the Ltd. Ed. SG-Special-1 comes in three beautiful classic color finishes, Cherry, Ebony, and Pelham Blue.

The Ltd. Ed. SG Special-1 joins the fan-favorite Special-1 Series designed to bring superior sound and historic Epiphone-style to players just starting out as well as to veterans who want a “workhorse” guitar to take on the road that’s lightweight but makes no compromise in electronics and hardware.

The “SG” profile is one of the most recognized in rock & roll.  First introduced in the early 1960s, “SG” guitars have been the driving force behind Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, jam bands, and British rock.  And now with the Ltd. Ed. SG-Special-I, Epiphone fans around the world can enjoy owning and playing a real Epiphone “SG” at a great price.

The Ltd. Ed. SG Special-1 has a Mahogany body cut to the historic SG profile and a bolt-on Mahogany neck featuring the same SlimTaperTM profile enjoyed by owners of iconic Epiphones like the Les Paul Standard and the Casino.  The Mahogany neck has a Rosewood fingerboard with 22 easy-to-press medium jumbo frets with pearloid dot inlays, just like vintage SGs.  Even though new players might favor the Ltd. Ed. SG Special-1, this SG boasts many of the same specifications found on all SGs including 1.68” nut and a 24.75” scale length.

The new Ltd. Ed. SG Special-1 is powered by an Epiphone Ceramic 700TTM Open Coil humbucker in the bridge or lead position and an Epiphone Ceramic 650RTM Open Coil humbucker in the neck or rhythm position.  Ceramic pickups have been a favorite of Hard Rock and Metal players for decades. Ceramic magnets became more readily available in the late 60s and early 70s just as guitar players were incorporating overdrive and distortion into their sound. Ceramic pickups have a sharp, articulate, and saturated tone that’s a perfect compliment to the SG Special-1’s Mahogany body. Pickup selection is made via a standard 3-way pickup selector and controls include Master Volume and Master Tone, both with classic Black “Speed” Knobs.

The Ltd. Ed. SG-Special I has Epiphone’s world renown rock-solid hardware including a heavy duty 1/4” jack, easy-turning machine heads with a pro 15:1 tuning ratio, and a classic wrap-around bridge and tailpiece compensated for reliable intonation.

This Guitar has simply amazed me. I wanted an SG for a while and have several High End Strats and a couple Les Pauls. A decent collection of guitars and have owned over 400 guitars in my 30 yrs of playing.Right now my budget just would not allow me to get the SG I had my eyes on. I was in my Local GC shopping around for a new toy and actually had $500 on me to spend. Well I came across one of these in the Blue Finish and just on a fluke picked it up and tried it out. @ seconds later I could not hand them my $127 plus tax fast enough. I HAD TO HAVE IT!. I took it home and did a fast set up on it. Wound up with a Guitar that has action like you'd expect from a way more expensive unit with almost no adjustments. I have a set of Gibson Pups on my shelf I intended to install. Um Not gonna do that!. The stock Pickups Deliver plenty Crunch and a smooth mellow tone when needed too. So Why Mess with it? For the Money I spent I am VERY VERY happy and I Intend on going back and buying a red and a black one to add to my collection. And I'll still have spent less then 1 of the Gifg dollar Gibby's would cost. WAY LESS. Not it's not a Gibson but lemme tell ya what I have played plenty of those and for the money,I'll take 3 of these and some cash left over before I spend the bg bucks on It's Big brother.

Pelham Blue SG

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

Bought this for my son's 11th birthday. I am genuinely surprised how it sounds. He has a little fender champion 20 for it and it sounds great. Action is good, a little rattle on low E but easily fixed while still keeping the action nice for his smaller hands. The Pelham blue looks amazing on it.

For the price, I'd recommend this to anyone looking to get into guitar.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

Bought this as a practice guitar for my hubby strictly based on your reviews. I know very little about guitars, but he really loves it. It's much lighter than the Gibson he usually uses. It's very nice looking and sounds and tunes well. Very pleased with my purchase. The price was definitely a steal.

Overall Great Starter Electric

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

Purchased for my 11 yr old for Christmas and started playing an acoustic guitar 6 months ago and an electric was on the wish list. I shopped around for a while and the SG seemed to be the right for a great starter and should give years of playing time. The fact the neck is a little smaller then the Strats helped me make the decision. I am not an expert on guitars, but to my ear it sounds pretty good. Based on the cost of this guitar I assume it has base line strings and have stretched a lot of the use the past few days and needed to be retuned several times. I am glad I bought him the Snark tuner as it is so easy to use and keeps it ready to play. Excellent finish, Solid construction and tone is great...and it put a huge smile on the kids face!!

Great beginner guitar. With a Marshall amp you can almost get that AC/DC tone.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

I'm an intermediate player and this is my first SG style guitar and for the price its a great deal. Tweeked it a little out of the box (lowered the action and raised the pickups). But those are personal preferences.. out of the box it played fine and sounded great. Don't be scared by the fixed bridge the guitar I got is intonated perfectly. That may change if you change string gauge, but there is some adjustment to the bridge.

The Phelem Blue is not carried in the stores so I ordered via the web site... no other site seems to carry that color so for the price of the off the rack guitar I got a custom color which is nice.

The SG Special Edition plays great and sound great.

This is a great guitar for a novice. I have only had it for a week and I am still trying to toughen up my fingertips......but I have learned several rifts and chords.

I selected Pelham blue color. Ninety-nine dollars is a Sanford & Son bonanza. You cannot go wrong with an Epiphone guitar. Nice enough to warrant investing a few hundred and upgrading it.
