I use the Soul Food as a clean boost on the recommendation of a GC employee in Nashua NH. I mentioned that I wanted a clean boost to my signal so that I could overdrive my amp a little more without having to change the gain I had setup. The Soul Food was recommended over a TS9, a Boss Overdrive and a Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster. I am very happy with the Soul Food recommendation.

The pedal is a great clean boost for my amp (Marshall TSL122). I put the pedal in the effect loop and set the pedal volume up to about 3:00 and the gain as zero, treble to taste (12:30). Then I dial in the effect loop percentage (its a parallel loop) and with the pedal engaged I get a nice, fat, sweet drive into the power amp section of the amp. This drives those big power tubes a little harder without having to turn up the volume. Thus, I get a heavier, fatter crunch compared to straight pre-amp distortion. This is the exact effect I was looking for.

Now I have my pre-amp gain set pretty low and I typically drive most of my crunch from the power amp. Using the Soul Food in the effects loop in the manner in which I described, setup as such, I get what amounts to more 'power amp' crunch without having to dime the amp's volume. Of course with the pedal engaged the volume is louder but because the effects loop is being driven harder on the return, the signal going to the power amp is hotter, thus driving the power tubes harder, without having to open the amp volume any more than I have it set at.

Even if this is not the preferred way to get more power amp distortion, using the Soul Food in this manner gives me the effect I want, and its sounds AWESOME, and that's really the bottom line.

As a clean boost it works perfectly. I was not very impressed with the pedal's actual distortion, it sounded a little fuzzy to me. Maybe that what its supposed to sound like. I wanted it for the clean boost feature and the pedal works great for that.

It came with a power supply, nice!

First of all, my amp does not have a full EQ. Nor do I have an EQ in my signal chain. I use my overdrives for EQ to scoop mids. This pedal can't do that. So, you get a fat, vintage distortion sound, but--- I dunno. It didnt add to the mix, and it certainly didnt push my OD into a lush, scooped sound. You really cant go cheap on distortion--- it makes or breaks your tone. So, for the money, I'd check out Wampler or my personal fave- Catalinbread -- I use a Catalinbread primary OD into a Wampler distortion (when I want even more gain). This pedal cannot compare with the pedals that are, admittedly twice the price.

Best 68 dollars ever spent at Guitar Center

By Mark Nestor

from Baltimore Md

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I got my Soul Food 2 weeks ago and its easily the best money ive ever spent on a pedal. I don't use a lot of pedals but im very picky about the ones I keep around. Ive tried the Soul Food with A les Paul standard and an American Stratocaster. The two amps ive used are a Marshall JMP Mk 2 (2204) and a Fender 6G3 "Brown" Deluxe . The sound im getting from the Marshall can be described as perfect, classic, British Hi Gain. Halfway between the best JCM800 sound and the Best Orange amps - Slightly less compressed than classic Marshall, Juicy, saturated, harmonically rich grind with a tight low end that holds together perfectly on the lowest notes. The Brown Deluxe is Known for its killer Power Tube OD. The Soul food adds in some rich preamp OD and tightens up the low end on my cathode biased, 6V6 driven Deluxe amp. The result is the "American" - Fender overdrive sound ive always looked for by tweaking and tube rolling. The Buzzy 6V6 effect is gone. "Brown" is the word. The volume tone and gain controls are very useful.A great stomp box and im completely glad I grabbed this one and not another. Until now my favorite was the Maxxon SD9, which I still like a lot.

Best pedal under $200 I have ever bought.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I own about 20 pedals and I own 3 tube amps ranging from 5 to 40 watts. I also own Gibson's and American Fenders. This pedal sounds great with all. I own several boutique pedals that I paid over $200 each on and this EH Pedal is as good or better.

A Giant Killer

By Michael Ward

from JC TN

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I just got mine this morning...had a little trouble finding one as they are for the most part on back order...but the search was well worth it...why would anyone pay 8 or 9 times what this cost for a Klon? This pedal is a spot on match function wise and sounds identical IMHO...I love the way it adds thickness and depth to my Strat and Gretsch and of course it sounds bodacious with my Les Paul's...the buffer/true bypass switch inside is a great addition...I really like this pedal and the price is a no-brainer...you will not be sorry unless you paid a small ransom for a Klon before finding this (Don't get me wrong, the Klon is a great pedal but very pricey...this EHX Soul Food at just under $63 is a steal)...This is defiantly a Giant Killer...great job Mike and Co. enjoy!

That Tone

By Matt Peterson

from St. Paul, MN

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I was watching a lot of reviews online of the EHX Hot Tubes, and when I went to buy that pedal, the sales guy made me try this Soul Food first. I don't know why EHX does it, but this is Hot Tubes and then some and it seems to get rid of the need for Hot Tubes in the lineup. It is everything from a very nice clean boost to a gorgeous overdrive. The treble knob gives it a nice range. Go try one and you'll fall in love! It's really the best overdrive I've used, and it's definitely one of the least expensive.

Warm

By John Murray

from Rockland, NY

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

EH did a really great job of emulating a classic sound. Clocking the knob yields a very subtle, gradual change. It's not immediately drastic, as soon as you start to clock, like some other pedals. This makes adjusting to taste very easy. The box is really durable. i'm not worried about smacking it with my foot on a gig. Sure, you can get a similar sound if you screw around with the gain on your amp... but there is something very WARM about the way this pedal sounds. I like the idea of just slapping the button and getting to the sound without fuss.

Believe the hype- and then some! EHX out-does the 'inspiration'!

By JIM

from Plainfield Il

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I'm sure you've heard the glowing reviews, perhaps watched some YouTube clips, maybe even tried one. But until you've logged some time with one of your own, you won't be able to truly grasp how wonderful this tool is. The drive and boost functions are stellar, and rightly reported as such. What's not so obvious, or widely reported are some of my favorite other uses as a pure "tone sweetener" and a game changer in a stacking role. In fact, I'll be purchasing at least one more unit to filed these roles in my setup. TONE SWEETENER: I've paid a lot of money I've the years for many pedals billed as the perfect 'Secret Sauce'. Many did a fine job, so e were even excellent, but that's usually ALL they did, eating up precious space on my board, and money. HOWEVER- crank the gain to zero, treble and vol. to taste, and it's on par with the best if them; at a fraction the cost, and space. STACKER: depending on the pedal, placement before or after can take a good pedal and make it great; great pedals genius. The Soul Food's voice can either tame or enhance, whatever's called fir. So, an already incredibly versatile pedal can be even more so, with a bit of experimenting, and as always, at an incredible price. Time will tell if there may be even more taste treats on the menu here, but even if that's it, this pedal has already earned its lofty praise, and place on boards of those with an appetite for versatility and glorious tone.

To much high end (Treble Boost)

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I purchased this Soul Food from reading all the 5 star reviews but after a couple of months of trying, I could not get the sound I was looking for. It is more of a high gain boost than an overdrive. I only play Telecasters and with it on the bridge pickup there is just to much highs. And on the neck pickup the sound was still no good. (No its not my guitar or my amp) It was to late to send the pedal back so I sold it and I bought the Hot Tubes pedal. Now with the Hot Tubes the notes and chords played are more clear and my amp sounds more like a Tube Amp than a solid state amp. Don't waste time with the Soul Food unless you want a sound that's really high pitch. Get the EHX Hot Tubes, You will like it much better.

    Soul Food

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Soul Food Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've used plenty of overdrive pedals and they all have their uses and some sound better than others depending on YOUR setup. For what I have, 2 Epiphone Les Pauls, both loaded with Duncan Jazz/Jb pickups, a Blackstar HT-5 combo, Dunlop KH-95 Wah, an MXR Carbon Copy Delay in the loop, this things sounds great as a boost, just adds to your sound. I have a Boss SD-1 I've been using and this pedal doesn't suck the bottom end out of your sound. As "transparent" as can be I guess. I love it, it gives me the sound I want from my amp. The best overdrive I've used and at this price you won't find better.

When I get ready to solo, I kick this thing down and everything I need is there. Just beautiful. Love it!

This pedal works for Blues, Country, Rock and Yes Metal too when put in front of a high gain amp/channel ! This pedal is Food for the Soul of your amp.

I love the range of features this pedal provides. It can be used as a simple boost or to dial up some great distortion. The internal buffer/true bypass switch is nice, too. I keep it switched to "true" for my purposes. Small footprint. High quality components. This is all I need. I usually play single coil or mini humbucker pickups. A TS9 or 808 seems redundant, as I don't need the growl.
