Overview

The 15W Blackheart Handsome Devil is a combo guitar tube amp designed and prototyped in a one-car garage in Austin, Texas, by amp savant, Pyotr Belov. The Handsome Devil combo amp evokes classic tube tones reminiscent of the great American and British amplifiers. Those were the plug and play workhorses that laid the foundation for rock 'n' roll guitar tone starting in the '60s. The BHE Handsome Devil is overbuilt to last with features and components you'd expect on a hand-built, much more expensive piece of gear.

Features dual power modes allowing the gods of rock to dial in responsiveness and headroom in either 15W or 7W output. Separate Master and Level controls put both awesome power and responsibility in the unwashed hands of mankind. 3 Bands of well-tuned EQ make for nearly infinite voicing. From big fat overdrive to plucky, just-about-to-squeal if you hit me a little harder grease, the Handsome Devil covers classic tube tone with as few knob turns as possible through a well thought out set of features in a tank-tough package.

Loaded with a 12" Blackheart Model 1216A Speaker by Eminence with American Voicing, optimized for the open back cabinet.

As expected, you get the simple elegance and robust component specs that mark BHE's designs. From 1W, carbon-film resistors in the signal path to beefy, double sided pcb with 2 oz. traces, 16 gauge, precision folded and welded chassis and mutli-ply, classically joined cabinetry, Blackheart is as serious about quality as they are about tone.

Better than you think!!

This amp has a modest no frills look and feel, giving you a classic Vox/Marshall style EL84 old school amplifier. It has Level (volume), Drive (gain) T, M, & B and Presence controls and that's it. No FX loop, no reverb - it's plain and simple stuff - a bit like the boutique clones of famous amps. But it has one very useful feature - it's switchable between 7 and 15 watts which is great for home AND playing with your band. I had previously owned an HT-5 and thought it was perfect but after playing it a while I realised it just couldn't really cut it playing in rehearsals. Fine for home use but that's it. So I went back to the shop and tried a few different low power amps and immediately liked the tone of this amp. It's authentic and with the drive up it delivers a solid classic rock tone while having very decent cleans. I use it with a Marshall Bluesbreaker 2 pedal and it makes my Les Paul sound gorgeous (the way it should) and on clean it complements my Strat perfectly. I sometimes use my Boss Metal Zone after the Bluesbreaker and then the amp does a very good "djent" tone for you metal guys if you really need it (I wouldn't buy this amp for metal though - its mainly a rock/heavy rock amp). There's a lot of marketing hype about low power amps and how even 5 watts is enough but I've learned recently that you can't beat a 12 inch speaker coupled with a pair of proper traditional power tubes to give an incredible tone - nothing new about that - and by switching to 7 watts and using a good overdrive pedal you can get this Handsome Devil to deliver a very authentic 'Marshall stack' valve tone without being a public nuisance. I already have a 100 watt 2X12 combo (Peavey) which is awesome for gigs etc. but this amp is my perfect play thing (and backup). Its reasonably portable but solidly built, and means business. Great for home, great for studio practice with a (loud) band at 15 watts, and was incredibly good value. Try it - you'll be impressed if you are looking for a quality valve amp. Makes you think all this hand-wired boutique amp stuff is all just marketing ;-).
