The Xotic SP Compressor is without a doubt a 5 Star product! For many years I used a 1953 Gibson ES 175 or 1966 Telecaster plugged into a MXR Dyna Comp and grew to appreciate the warm squash this device had to offer as I lost the taste for most all distortion devices on the market. The Dyna Comp was a simple two knob device that squeezed my signal rather nicely to which I still have 3 of them floating about the house. I also have the more expanded version, MXR Limiter dating from the early 80s that also does a nice job modifying my signal. The only initial down side to the Dyna Comp was a little bit of noise. However the real down side to the old Dyna Comp was sometime in the early 90s, after Dunlop acquired ownership of the MXR Product, decided to reduce the cost of production by having all the jacks, pots, and switch connected directly to the PC Board via solder bath. Not only did this process of assembly affect the durability of this classic old compressor, it also compromised the tone and performance of a one great pedal. The vintage Dyna Comps wired point to point are far superior product. If you have one, keep it! In the wake of the cheapening of the Dyna Comp came the Keeley Compressor. I bought a Keeler Compressor somewhere around 10 years ago a noticed an improvement in performance over my old Dyna Comps with less noise. And with going into great detail, every guitar, from my old 1951 L5 to any of my old Fender sound great through this compressor. So now a new and somewhat revolutionary compressor has hit in the market by way of the Xotic SP. These guys are making some of the best pedals that I?ve run across in years. By the time I got my SP I was already the proud owner of an EP Booster and SL Drive. To later I have to say it is the only distortion that has come out in the last 30 years with a decent sounding tone that does not narrow the bandwidth of your signal path. Not to mention these pedals just happen to be the cutest looking signal devices on the market. What really makes the SP Compressor outstanding is the 3 position Hi/Mid/Low switch. The versatility to this pedal via of this switch is just amazing. In the Hi mode I can match the performance of my Keeley and Dyna Comp compressors for Jazz applications. However, I have taken using the Mid position for a great Blues/Rock tone. In this position the pedal allows me to play over the top of the compressor for soaring highs. This works in great combination with my 1960 Telecaster with Barden pickups. Anyway, I highly recommend the Xotic SP Compressor with its advantage in versatility over other compressors on the market. And here?s the bonus, this pedal is priced about $100 less than the Keeley. My hat?s off to you folks at Xotic for manufacturing a fantastic compressor at an affordable price that will thousands of guitar players sound better and better. Now if you can reinvent the Sola Sound Tone Bender in one of these small bud boxes, that would be fantastic!

I bought this pedal and had to return it due to the high levels of noise in the mid and high compression settings. The compressor works just as a Ross type compression should. The blend knob is a nice feature, although there are other compressors out there that offer blend.

If you just using the low setting, the noise isn't an issue. At the highest level, the noise is overbearing and for me it is unuseable. The medium setting is fine if the blend is dialed back. However, I bought this compressor to use it fully and it did not deliver for me.

On a positive note, I do like the layout and design of this compact pedal.

Comments about Xotic SP Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

this is a very straightforward pedal. everything can be addressed from how much compression-including 3 position eq switching for more subtle setting. you can have barely detectable, leave it on for clarity or use as a sustainer/overdrive which shares with other O/D's dist. to find your frequency range. keeps it from being muddy - satisfied

Comments about Xotic SP Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

If you are in the market for a compressor pedal, and if you play guitar or bass, you should be... this is a really, really good option for the price. There are 3 modes (lo, med, hi) and two knobs, and you can really tailor your sound and dial it in to perfection. My recommendation is to order a voltage doubler so you can get it running at 18v, as this will give you more headroom and more variability. Seriously, if you need a compressor pedal this is probably the best you can find for under $150.

Comments about Xotic SP Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I compared this to a compressor in a sparkly blue box (by a company that rhymes with "sampler") and the SP does everything for less money. The sound quality is top notch. It's also very quiet. I can even run it while having a drive pedal on (the gain isn't cranked of course). It plays well with other pedals. I didn't even mess with the dip switches inside the pedal. I found my sound right away. It just fattens everything up and pushes you up in the mix. I was using an old red pedal that rhymes with "kinda-stomp". This pedal leaves that old red one in the dust. It'll never leave my board.

Comments about Xotic SP Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I am pleased overall with this pedal - I find the sound quality excellent and the options for blend and effect level to be comprehensive. My only complaint is that the pedal makes a "pop" when switched on and off.
I contacted Xotic by email to ask about this, and got a prompt phone call in response. The tech I spoke with suggested it could be due to disagreement with a preamp tube in my amp (83 Fender Super Champ). He gave several more solutions as well. I haven't taken steps to remedy the "pop", but I've decided this is not a deal-breaker for me, given that I will keep the pedal on most of the time, and I like the sound, controls, and compact size of the pedal.

Buy the 2 knobs keeley. I have no idea why people highly recomend this pedal. I try 2 of this for about a year and I end sold those both pedals.Horrible noise!!... Please save your money, you can take better sounds with the inexpensive mxr dynacomp. Or buy a Keeley compressor (2 knobs) . Cheers!

Comments about Xotic SP Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I don't like very much compression at all. I have an mxr and a boss that I don't really care for because they both squish the heck out of your tone. That sound is probably actually great for some people. If you like that rubbery chicken pickin clicky stretchy string sound. But I like Barely any compression. A pedal I can leave on that Just kind of warms up and slightly evens out my tone. I have a Wampler That does that very very well. But I was looking for something new for a different pedal board. I read some reviews and blogs. This one was on my list for a while. It's very close to the wampler ego in the fact that you can achieve mild compression. But It sounds pretty good even when You turn up the compression a bit. It has some dip switches inside, but 90% of everyone I read about leave them at their stock setting. I opened It up just to see, and I like it way better where they come set at too. I'm having trouble deciding which comp to leave on the main board now.

Comments about Xotic SP Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

The reviews of this pedal were a little confusing, everyone liked it but I could not figure out exactly why. Having it on my pedalboard I now understand. I used an A/B comparison to ascertain the value of this pedal (pedal on vs. pedal off). The pedal, when dialed in correctly does not change my sound, it enhances it. With my OCD overdrive pedal into my Deluxe Reverb my sound is much more harmonically rich. Sounds new-agey, but it is not. My clean sound also benefits because it is more dynamically responsive and polished with the SP Compressor. Reviews, even positive ones do not do this pedal justice. The best way to evaluate the SP is to plug it into your pedal chain and let 'er rip. I used a Les Paul for this evaluation.
