Before I get into any details about these sticks, let me just say that I mainly play Rock/Punk music, like what the Ramones played. That means constant eighth notes on the Hi Hat at over 200 BPM. And I can't just tap the hats lightly, either. I have to go fast AND hit it hard enough to get some decent volume. Needless to say, after an hour and a half of that, the drum sticks usually can't take much more before they break. I purchased a pair of the Vater 7As because I like to experiment with different brands each time I buy new sticks, in hopes of finding something perfect for what I play. When I took these out of the package/sleeve, I was surprised by how heavy they were for 7As. They weighed the same as my Sound Percussion 5As! So I sat down on my kit and started playing. At first, the extra weight kind of threw off my playing, but after about an hour, I got used to it. Another full hour went by, and I was completely exhausted . . . . but these Vater sticks on the other hand, were just a little scratched up. I was impressed. About three days went by, and these sticks still were still holding up. At this point they'd beat the record of any other stick I'd ever owned (and I don't have bad technique or anything. Songs like Zero Zero UFO at around 225 BPM will really kill your sticks. The eighth notes on the hats are so fast you can barley hear them). I was sure the sticks would break sometime soon though. How could they put up with much more? A week went by. They STILL will not break! I'm sitting here staring at my chewed up, practically unusable sticks in amazement. Have you ever seen a stick get so messed up that you couldn't use it? Without it actually breaking? I'm in awe. This is the best 7A stick I've ever used (Even though it feels like a 5A). The heaviness doesn't out-weigh the fact these sticks have the perfect balance, feel, and insane durability that every stick should have. I'd give them six stars if I could.

Let me start by saying that the feel of these sticks is EXACTLY what I was looking for. For my playing, my hands, my kit, they just feel RIGHT. I don't play super hard, probably at a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10 (where 1 is tickling the drum, and 10 is trying to break the drum). This is the first brand/model where the nylon tips consistently shatter while I'm playing. I play at a "mega-church" and really have to pay attention to dynamics and I found out after this had happened to me that it was happening to one of the other drummers so he switched to wood tips. In 3 months I have broken 0 sticks, but have had 5 tips break, and this happens when the stick has ~2-3 hours of playing time on it. I love the feel of these, but the durability is forcing me to find another brand with the same feel :(

The 7A Wood is a good choice for finesse

By Kit Mills

from Oak Harbor, WA

Comments about Vater Hickory Drumsticks:

One-third to one-half of my daily practice time is spent in rudimental work on a practice pad, so I purchased these sticks--with their barrel tips--hoping these would be light enough and with fine enough balance to allow me to work on finesse. These sticks, my first pair from Vater, work very well for me, being indeed well-balanced and light enough for repetitive technique work. Apart from rudiment practice, I suspect they'd be too light for heavier playing, but would probably work well in acoustic and jazz combo settings. I plan to purchase some 5A Wood and Nylon pairs down the road for more general playing.

Awesome Sticks !!!

By noahr31

Comments about Vater Hickory Drumsticks:

These hickory drumsticks are really awesome sticks. The sticks I were using before I tried a pair of Vater's broke way to easy. When I went to Guitar Center, I got a good deal on some Vater sticks. I have been using them ever since. I have been using them for about two years now. They are really strong for plain Hickory sticks. I never expected them to last as long as they do. So when the time comes, don't hesitate. You have to buy some sticks from vader. You won't be disappointed!

durability at a great price

By brettbags

Comments about Vater Hickory Drumsticks:

These are simply the best wooden sticks you can buy in my opinion. I have used the 5A's and 7A's in wooden tip and plastic tip and they are amazing sticks. Very balanced and they have a fantastic grip to em. These sticks really last me a long time and I would suggest these to anyone serious about drumming, especially those hard hitters because these suckers will last. They are a little heavier in my opinion then other sticks, but the extra weight is well worth it.

Vater Hickory Drumsticks

By Person

from Buckeye, AZ

Comments about Vater Hickory Drumsticks:

Vater is my favorite brand of sticks. I've been using them since the day I started playing and I absolutely love these. They are very high quality and have the perfect weight. I have absolutely no complaints. Although I would like to point out, that I've gone through 3 pairs this year, which is odd, because broken sticks are very uncommon for me.

ROCK!!!

By zxcv

from wala wala washington

Comments about Vater Hickory Drumsticks:

Vater sticks are durable, consistent, and feel great. They tend to be a bit heavier, but that makes for effortless rimshots. If you like power, Rock, 5b, or 1a are excellent. I personally like the 1as because they are nice and long. If you want a stick that holds up to tremendous beatings, use Vaters.

5B Nylon Tip

By Zach Purcell

from Detroit, MI

Comments about Vater Hickory Drumsticks:

I've owned these sticks for months and I am not disappointed at all. They are just the right weight (light-medium) for me and that's great because I play tons of ghost notes and I'm a very aggressive, hard-hitting player. The nylon tip adds great warmth and stick definition to all of my cymbals. I would definitely recommend buying a pair of these.

Awesome sticks, except one thing!

By Brandon Brodrick

from Laredo, Texas

Comments about Vater Hickory Drumsticks:

The VATER Fatback 3A sticks are awesome drum sticks. I've tried different sticks from almost all other companies out there and I must say these sticks are still my #1. They are great if you play pop, rock, funk, or anything in between. I play in a Christian worship band and a contemporary cover band and these sticks are great for stuff like that. Most of the songs we play are rock or pop and these sticks haven't failed me yet. A good friend of mine, Melly Baldwin (Drummer for Justin Bieber) used these last tour and he recommended these to me. Now I know why he used these, they're fantastic. The only problem I have, which is most likely a personal problem, is that my hands sweat a lot and that makes my grip slippery, but i just re adjust me hand and i'm good again. But besides that, these sticks pack a big punch. You are definitely gonna be noticing a difference in your playing mostly with the volume in which you are playing. But if you are looking in investing in these sticks, go ahead. You need these sticks in your life, I'm telling you!

    Comments about Vater Hickory Drumsticks:

The extra length is what makes these sticks great for me. At just under 17" they have a nice feel especially if you hold them toward the back of the stick. You can gain a lot of power with the extra length. 16" sticks just feel too short for me. They are also pretty light so you can really get some speed up while having the extra power. My only complaint is that I would prefer some kind of shellac finish to improve grip. Regal Tip uses a varnish or shellac on most of their sticks which really helps you hold on to them. The finish on these hickory sticks is just smooth wood so you have to be careful. I would recommend you try them.

I have used three different models of vater and have another pair on the way and they all have been great. The only one that I don't use that I bought is the excel they are to short but they work good on my electric kit but not my acoustic. All in all I recommend vater to anyone!

They broke on me within a week!

        By Taylor Nguyen

        from Richmond, Virginia

        Comments about Vater Hickory Drumsticks:

So I recently switched to Vater from Promark and Vater is amazing. I love them. However, the sticks I received started chipping at the bottom in about 5 days of light use. I suspect that it was probably 1 in a million because I haven't seen another review similar to mine. Would have received 5 stars if it weren't for this one flaw. These were Wood 5A if it makes any difference.

        My pair lasted very long

        By Pax

        from Southwest

        Comments about Vater Hickory Drumsticks:

I manage to practice an average of 30 minutes a day each week. I got a pair of 5As with the nylon tip and they lasted about 3 1/2 months. I play really hard, and I was surprised that these sticks, compared to my generic wood-tip 5Bs, lasted longer and gave me a better feel for playing. I'd suggest these sticks if you need something strong and durable that stays put in your hand.

        Feels right

        By Wes

        from Argonne, WI

        Comments about Vater Hickory Drumsticks:

These sticks have a slightly larger diameter than other brands 5B's that I've tried. For me, this makes them more comfortable to grip. However, they're light enough and short enough (16") to be quick. The finish is just right, so I don't find them slippery at all. I used to play nylon tips, but the wood tips combined with the relaxed grip just feels too good. I've found my sticks!

        Fusion- Best Feeling Sticks

        By Blake E

        from Kentucky

        Comments about Vater Hickory Drumsticks:

The wood fusions are simply the greatest feeling sticks I have ever played with. They have enough length on them while having the perfect diameter. They are there when you want to rock out and play loud, but still perfect to play with a variety of dynamics. Even though these sticks may shred a little faster than vic's, I believe they are well worth it and am sticking with these for life.
