  • Best all around snare I have played.

As reviewed by TK on 8/25/2010

This drum has converted me from wood to metal snare drums. I've owned the brass starphonic drum for over 8 months. The tone is nice and open, but the drum is not very ringy at all (did not need to use the Evans E Ring that came with it). Works great in all tuning ranges and is straightforward to tune. Has a nice crack, especially when tuned medium to high. The sound has a nice warmth to it. I've barely had to re-tune the drum during this time. The bottom head is easy to adjust thanks to the Starphonic hardware. Works great in all sorts of applications depending on the tuning used. The drum can take a beating and the claw hooks stay in place. Rimshots seem easier to perform on this drum as well. The only negative is the Evans snare side coated head that came with the drum. The coating stuck to the rim making it difficult to remove and change the head without warping the original. Had manually remove the coating pieces from the rim, which was annoying. Swapped in a new Evans head and sounded even better. Compared to other high-end snare drums in general, the cost is low (relatively speaking, of course) for the quality of this drum and the hardware. It's more impressive than many signature snare drums out there (and cheaper). Highly, highly recommended.

  • Great All Around Snare!

As reviewed by Aaron DeGeer on 1/6/2012

This snare is great! I originally owned a steel snare before this, and always found it lacking. That's when I found this drum. This drum has a brass shell so it's a little warmer and also fuller than steel. The hoops are basically triple-flanged except turned in, not out, at the end. By having these hoops, it allows it to be nice and open sounding. The drum has a nice fat sound with plenty of attack as well as a lot of volume! I mean a lot! But it's not out of control, it's just getting used to it first. Tuning is a breeze on this thing, and it stays in tune. I find it sound best when the top bottom head is tuned about a 3rd above the top. Gives it a nice crack with a nice full body. Overall a very top notch snare. Definitely recommend!
