I purchased this snare a year ago this month, and i honestly have no complaints about it.
First off, like many other snares, this thing looks way way better in person. It's a beautifully crafted snare drum, tama has a trend of that. I don't like tube lugs or beaded shells aesthetically, but the two together on this drum look wonderful.
This snare is wonderfully organic for steel. It's slightly dark with a beautiful open crack. They labeled it properly, vintage steel is a great name for it. it has a great shuffle-esque style and is greatly sensitive and earthy considering it's material. This snare about has the gut of a brass snare. The vintage rims give this snare a great look, it resonates so warmly, and they don't carve you sticks up like other hoops.
i'm a huge stickler for a snare's cross stick sound, as a younger drummer, i never had one that had a good cross. I can honestly say in my 12 years of drumming, this is one of the top 3 best cross sticking snares I've heard. Wonderfully crisp, nice pop, and the snares react just right to it.
I'm a heavy hitter, and i haven't been disappointed with this snare as I dig in. It's open rim shot cracks and reverbs like the best metal snares out there. Once again, warm and vintage, but powerful and pops just right. Not too sharp, just right. This snare is actually louder than my 14 ply Starclassic G-Maple, which is really saying something.
Overall you cannot go wrong with this snare. It's blend of sensitivity, warmth, power and vintage texture makes it an awesome go to snare. I have rarely used any other snare for my worship project, it is just perfect for the widely dynamic playing we do. It's been my go to snare since I purchased it. I highly recommend this snare to any musician, veteran or beginner.
WOW This 5.5x14 metal snare drum is sick it sounds exactly as described I usually replace stock heads right away but left these on because it is an evans G-1 any ways back to the snare
have owned many metal snares traded my 6.5x14 Tama metal works snare it was awesome and had great attack and punch recorded great too. but this drum is much more responsive it has great tone brass tube lugs and I wanted a little less depth here is how good this snare drum is went into studio to record on the studio kit was an 1200 dollar DW edge snare played 1 song with it was not impressed got my SLP vintage and blew the dw out of the water even the engineer could tell the difference long story short this drum is amazing great tone projection and value this snare will not let you down it is a no brainer if you need a metal snare look no further this will be my main snare for years to come this drum has a very pro feel and looks great on stage I own the g bubinga SLP also and 2 totally different animals but if I could only have 1 THE SLP VINTAGE STEEL WOULD BE IT. it's that good...
