The TASCAM DP-01FX Digital 8-Track Portastudio features a one-knob-per-function design that has made TASCAM cassette Portastudios the choice of thousands of musicians. It shatters the confusing page-shift-menu interface found in most other digital recorders. The DP-01FX has 2 - 1/4 " TRS mic/line inputs, 2 phantom-powered XLR microphone inputs for connecting condenser mics, plus a guitar-level input. Its 8 tracks record at uncompressed CD quality to an internal 40GB hard drive, and a stereo master track is available for recording a mix. Each channel has a 45mm volume fader, plus dedicated controls for pan, effects send, high EQ, and low EQ. An LCD display shows meters, editing settings, and locate points. It has a USB 2.0 jack for file backup and transferring mixes to a computer. There are analog RCA line outputs, a headphone out and S/PDIF line output. The DP-01FX also has a multieffects processor for adding effects to an instrument during recording and a reverb processor for adding effects during a mix.

I've had the DP-01FX now for a couple weeks and I can pretty do much anything on it. It is a great tool to easy to learn how to use. I recommend this product, for the money you can't beat it. Just remember to also purchase the punch in pedal (TASCAM RC-30P). It makes recording much easier. I do not use the FX that much but the built in XLR input is great to have.
Before the DP01FX, I used Tascam's 414mkII cassette 4-track. The difference in quality from cassette to digital is PHENOMENAL! The DP01FX has so many different effects designed for guitar, bass, vocal, and drums. There is also 5 different reverb settings you can use for each song such as a LIVE, or STUDIO reverb effect. This machine is soooooo simple to get to specific parts in your songs, cut, paste, or move, any part of any track right down to the millisecond. it is very precise! It also has approximately 15 hours of song space on the hard drive which you can easily transfer directly to your PC. No extra software is needed. It's a Breeze. I recorded a song and played it for some of my friends and they could barely believe the professional quality of the song compared to songs I used to record on my old four track. I definitely would suggest this machine to anybody interested in a solid, great quality digital recorder. The ONLY complaint I have is that there is no backlight on the screen. This might sound nitpicky or very minimal(which it is) but it can be annoying trying to read the screens sometimes. Even with a light on in the room it's still not as easy to view the screen and that is why I rate it a 4.5 instead of 5. If only Tascam would have made the screen with a back light, there would be nothing to improve on.
I use this to record my bands new songs...You can do everything on the system itself or you can export the files into program to do more editing...My buddy has one as well and records EVERYTHING on it...he absolutely loves it...
I use this digital recorder for everything. It is extremely easy to operate and all the mixing can be done on the recorder or the tracks can be exported to other software for further mixing. A great deal for the price. I was able to understand and use this product the first day I got it. Great for beginners and great for more experienced home studios musicains. I highly recommmend this product.
For years, I used an old Tascam cassette 4-track (424), and I never got rid of it because it always worked, and it was very easy to operate. Unlike a lot of digital home recorders out there, the Tascam DP-01FX works with the same ease as the old 4-tracks, but you can do so much more with it. Also, the tracks never sound tinny, as is often the case on digital home recording equipment, and there's no hiss/machine noise whatsoever. What I like most about the unit is that you can use it as its own built-in recorder/mixer/effects unit, or you can use it to record tracks, and then easily upload those tracks into a computer mixing program. I'm not the most computer literate person in the world, and I have a Mac. These are usually big issues when it comes to compatibility and operation. In the case of the DP-01FX, though there was no issue. Importing from and exporting to the unit is unbelievably simple. I haven't had the need for the built-in effects, but I wanted the XLR inputs, so I bought this unit instad of the DP-01. It cost more, but was definitely worth the price, which, overall, is not going to break the bank.
This is a digital 8 track recorder. If you want a unit that is easy to operate this may be what you desire. This unit is a great item for a person that wants to make the move from a cassette tape recorder. The unit is very easy to operate since each feature has a individual know, so you won?t have to go through several menu screens. The unit has phantom power, which is always a good idea to have. The onboard reverb processor is usable but it tends to offer nothing particularly special. The DPO1FX has a 40GB hard drive so you should have plenty of storage space for your projects. Overall this is a very solid unit.
