Overview

The Shadow SH 965 NFX-B is a professional double bass pickup that provides absolute natural sound with zero hum. The pickup is based on the revolutionary Nanoflex-technology, that makes no compromise in preserving these features. It's built to reproduce the vibrations of your bass authentically with every move of the bow in all positions. No instrument modification was a must in developing this pickup system.

For centuries bass makers worldwide selected the best woods to make, create and build the upright bass as it sounds today. Many hours of trimming the top and the bridge are invested to create the ultimate bass sound.

Nanoflex pickups not only take the vibrations of the strings like common undersaddle pickups. Nanoflex senses the vibrations of the strings and the body of the instrument simultaneously. Due to active amplification directly at the pickup and 100% shielding of the entire system, no sound will be lost and no hum created.

  • 100% hum and noise free
  • Super sensitive Nanoflex pickup

I have been playing electric bass for years but in January of 2008 my wife bought me an upright bass for my birthday. At first it was like a whole other instrument but I am finally ready to do some gigs with it. I have read everything I could about upright pickups and had a hard time making a choice. I liked the looks and style of the shadow SH 965 NFX-B Nanoflex so I thought I would give it a shot. I am totaly satisfied. It was an easy install and does not loose any of the accoustic integrity when amplified. I can't wait to do my first accoustic gig. Definitly the right choice.

I play 10-15 gigs per month. I get a lot of use out of my pickup. I have owned a Fishman BP-100, 2 of the original Realist, and several microphone-based pickups.

The Upside:

The tone. Very good. Never have I played a pickup that so clearly transfers what I am playing(Pizz or Arco). I can play harmonics at the end of the finger board and low c on my extension and get the same clear volume from each.

I loved (coming from a Realist) having elements under both sides of the bridge (With the Realist my bridge liked to move on me).

The volume and tone control comes in very handy.

The Downside:

I first purchased the Shadow about 6 years ago. The first shadow I owned suffered from severe battery drain and eventually (after 4.5 years) developed an internal hum and a crackle in the 1/4" input. I was happy to replace that pickup figuring that 4.5 years of heavy use is plenty to ask for.

I purchased my second Shadow about 9 months ago. This pickup was identical to the first. I replaced the battery 4-5 times within the first 9 months. Since first installing the pickup on my bass, the sound guys at my gigs have been complaining about crackle and hum. I played an outdoor festival last week and the sound guy decided enough was enough and totally removed me from the mix. I don't blame him.

The hum is not hugely obvious in amps. However, when playing in a sound system (especially with subs) the effect gets worse.

The 1/4" input is not very durable. If you decide to purchase this pickup try to alleviate as much of the weight of the cord from the pickup as you can. I did this by attaching the cable to my tail piece. I still had to try not to move a lot on stage because that would cause loud crackling.

Movement of the cords connected the leads with the main unit results in crackling.

All in all, I really love the sound this pickup gets me. However, I no longer feel like I can depend on it gig after gig after gig. I just purchased the Realist Sound Clip with the expectation that I will be sacrificing some of the beautiful sound of the Shadow for the supposed dependability that is the Realist.

The Best Jazz Bass Pickup I've Found!

            By Norman Andross

Comments about Shadow SH 965 NFX-B Nanoflex Pickup with Preamp for Upright Bass:

Dead simple to use. Just follow the installation guidelines. Definitely put rosin on the piezo pickups to avoid bridge movement. Once properly set up, I've found no need to adjust the preamp controls. Just plug in and play.
A superb pickup that reproduces acoustic jazz bass with clarity and volume. Over the years, I've tried many pickup brands and have also owned several. All of these previous pickups had issues that kept me looking for something more. The Shadow 965 with its twin piezo elements and on-board mini preamp is the finest sounding pickup I've come across yet. Installation is a snap and the unit's reliability is bullet-proof. I just plug in and play... and real bass sounds come out!
World class quality. Compact design, excellent materials, accurate and transparent sound.
Excellent value. There are certainly cheaper pickups on the market. However, you won't find one that includes a miniature on-board preamp... and that reproduces genuine bass sound of the highest quality for less money.

Comments about Shadow SH 965 NFX-B Nanoflex Pickup with Preamp for Upright Bass:

I have only had a chance to fiddle with it once so far, the sound it puts out is amazing! The sound is very pure and true. I ran it through a 100w backline head and swr 4x12 cab. the only problem is that it doesnt allow the full volume like my peavey cirrus. maybe just due to the small battery. It still is loud enough for almost any gig that you could play, just doesnt have that edge over drums playing full volume. Well worth it especially for the price.

Comments about Shadow SH 965 NFX-B Nanoflex Pickup with Preamp for Upright Bass:

ok I have made my living playing music for over 45 years ( about 160 shows per year) --this pick up sounds very good a lower volumes, it has feedback issues at higher volumes ( as most UBR pickups do )--it is the 1st upright pickup I have used that I can play Arco as well as Piz (bow and plucked ) other upright pickups I use and own are Upton revolution ,K&K, Underwood, as well as a Fender P-bass magnetic pickup mounted on the end of the finger board (can't bow with the P-bass pickup)
this pickup( shadow SH 965) works much better in the studio than live ( again feedback issues )
ok now for the problems ----the two pickups that mount under the bridge feet are not matched , much different output levels ,there is no adjustment for the separate input on the preamp so I end up with a uneven signal between D ,G strings and the E, A strings(if there were separate controls this would be a easy fix ) I have tried to contact the company many many times and have received a responce from Shadow although the problem is not resloved as of yet they do seem very happey to try and get to in issue -so I would say that the company is a t least trying

            Amazing Pickup

            By Alex-YarX_

Comments about Shadow SH 965 NFX-B Nanoflex Pickup with Preamp for Upright Bass:

Im a bassist at Berklee College of Music, and have long been looking for a solid pickup that best replicates my acoustic's sound. I've seen a lot of friends using realists, and have gotten vastly different sounds and responses, usually none that appeal to me. The Shadow however, has honestly reproduced my bass's sound near perfectly. The sound has a very fast attack, and does not boost or cut any highs or lows. It does flatten the sound a little, but any pickup will and it is very minimal in this case. I was hesitant about the two pads under the bridge, worried that it would really mess with my bass's sound while not being amplified. More or less nothing! It does seem the slightest bit quieter, but only I can tell because im used to my bass. The only problem I have is with a slight bit of buzzing. The ends of the pads have plastic blocks that sit against the top, which occasionally buzz, and the preamp's battery buzzes as well ever so slightly. These problems though are fantastically easy to fix with either a small piece of tape or a square of fabric slid under the blocks. If you're looking for a pickup that seriously gets the best sound out of your bass, check this one out.
