INSANE!

By John Frusciante

from L.A.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:

As a long time Les Paul player, I must say that this pickup is the only thing that will boost Paul to its full potential, you wont regret it. The pickup is the best of both worlds. It has that fat chunky tone of a humbucker with the sheer volume of a single coil pick up. It's INSANE!

Great Pickup

By Michael

from Escondido, California

Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:

I play a Gibson Les Paul Studio and I must say that this pickup has truly brought out the best in my guitar sound. My guitar started with the burst buckers that were a bit too bright and lacked real power in the lower frequencies. I then moved to Zakk Wylde EMG's that were brutal for heavy stuff but I moved on from that. I remember playing my buddies Les Paul Jr. with a P90 through my gear and it sounded amazing. I could have my distortion set pretty heavy but still get clean open chords. I went to Guitar Center and bought the Phat Cat to fill in my hum bucker space in the bridge position... perfection. I get compliments all the time on my set up and it is largely due to this pickup. If you have a hum bucker space and want a real single coil P90 sound, this is the one for you.

Great in a Telecaster, too

By Andrew

from Durham, NC

Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:

I originally got the SPH90-1B Phat Cat to replace the bridge pickup in my Ibanez hollowbody. In a fit of weirdness, though, I ended up installing in the neck position on my 2006 Telecaster. I decided to remove the pick guard to take a look at the rout and think about some new pickup options, and decided to see if the Phat Cat would fit...and it dropped right in!! With much better output than the stock neck pickup, it remains well balanced when clean, but turns to pure raunch and snot when you add fuzz, overdrive or distortion. The tones I got from this amazing (not so) little guy in the neck ranged from beautiful to screaming. And in a surprise turn, when I tried blending the stock Fender bridge pickup with the Phat Cat in the neck, I found one of the glassiest, clearest clean tones my ears have EVER encountered. Tele players, take note, this pickup really can help your favorite Fender do anything!

This pickup sounds great for jazz, blues, and rock in an arc

By marc

Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:

I replaced the super 58 humbuckers in my Ibanez hollow body jazz guitar with these. I found the humbuckers to be too boomy in the neck. These Phat cat pickups sound sweet, defined, and distort nicely. They are not just like a P 90 by Gibson but they sound wonderful anyway. I appreciate not having to carve into my guitar to get this P 90 tone. They are quiet too because they are potted. Bottom line, they are great!

The phat cat.

By Austin

from Franklin, TN

Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:

Okay well I used this pickup in the neck with a JB humbucker in the bridge. This was to get varying tones and a more original sound. This pickup sounds alot like a P90 but not just like it. Different in its own good way. I like this pickup because it can be hot and thick but it is also very clear. I can easily hear individual notes cleary even when playing with distortion channel and a bit of gain. Very impressed. I like the pedal alot. I would buy it again if a similiar situation arose.

Love for the soapbar...

By R.Levine

from NJ

Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:

I've always loved Soapbar pickups. When it came time to replace the bridge pickup in my SG special, I went with a phat cat. I love this pickup. It's so clear and articulate. Good bite. Great mid-range punch. Lots of body. Even with the tone rolled all the way off, it's so clear. This is cool, because you can roll it back and cut out some of the high end bite but still retail all the clarity. I love this pickup more than this review can say. Highly recommended.

gorgeous tone

By h

from cincinnati

Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:

I decided to go for something different, so I paired a Neck Phat Cat with a Duncan Custom 5 in the bridge. I've always loved the tone of p-90s in the neck position, but since I play harder rock, I need a humbucker in the bridge. The Phat Cat gives me that great neck tone without forcing me to cut up my beloved guitar, but more importantly, it gave me a new sound. I wired the middle position of my blade selector switch to split the bridge humbucker, pairing the coil with the Neck Phat Cat to create a series connection. The resulting tone is crisp with great highs, punchy, and very clear, even under heavy distortion. This is a great pickup to experiment with.

Adding bite to your guitar

By Pedro Amado

from cucuta, Colombia

Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:

i have always been a strat fan but so many people speak so highly of Les Pauls that i had to try one, i bought a nice black Les Paul Studio 1997 with a rare ebony fingerboard and though i love the sounds it gives with distortion the cleans were never very satisfying....i decided to try and fix this by replacing the bridge pickup and read a lot and finally purchased the phat cat, after replacing the original the original Gibson Humbucker that comes stock with the new phat cat my Les Paul has come alive!! the cleans have improved so much and the distortion is so clear!! i certainly would recommend it to anyone who wants to improve the cleans and all around sound on an Humbucker equipped guitar...

Have come to love these.

By MD

from Caorsegold CA

Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:

I got these for a project after hearing the sound samples on the seymour duncan web site, trying to pay more attention to diffrences in tones as appossed to what amp the guitar is being played through. I liked the neck pickup right off the bat and would reccomend this for any clean sound out there. The bridge pickup, to me, had too much strat(single coil)sound to it. After a while of having mismatched pickups I decided on re-installing the bridge pickup and as our tastes(ears) change over time I fell in love with the bridge pickup as well. I can't speak highly enough of these as a set they take the best of both worlds:single-coil violin-like tones and humbucker noise control and depth, and combine them into one package. These paired with the right distortion and you've got an aggresive sound that is unique, cause really nobody knows about these pickups. They are difintely a sleeper "cell" in the seymour duncan arsenal.

WOW - Best P90 for the money !

By Normand Drolet

from Montreal, CANADA

Comments about Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat:

I just install a Phat Cat in the the neck position on a G&L Asat BluesBoy USA. It replace a Seymour Duncan Seth Lover. The sound is fantastic, as a P90 should be. Good quality. I like a lot the P90 mean sound. I tried a set of Mississipi Queen from Bare Knucle: very expensive and too bright. I have also a guitar with P90 from Jason Lollar: also expensive but excellent. The best for me. But for the money, nothing compare to the Phat Cat. Very satisfied.
