I have used Rotosound RS66LD strings for the majority of the last twelve years and have yet to review them so here goes! As for the strings' characteristics: they are stainless steel so they are a bit more course than nickel-plated steel strings but not to the point of discomfort. String tension is very well balanced and the strings lend themselves well to a variety of different styles (slap, pick, finger style, flamenco, etc.). Tonally, these strings are monsters! I have tried a plethora of different strings (as most of us have) and nothing comes close to the tone of Rotosound. They produce an awesome low mid growl that most progressive rockers will especially appreciate (think Rush or Yes). There is a trade off with these string however. It is true that they chew up frets quickly relative to other stainless steel strings. Honestly, I feel many reviews over-exaggerate this aspect of the strings as I have used them for the better part of twelve years and have only had the frets on my American Fender Jazz worked on once. For what it's worth, these are the only strings I will put on any of my basses.

I just tried these on a bass and the A and D strings wouldn't even wind up tight - I stripped away the red cloth winding to find cheap single wire at their ends - that red cloth is to hide their cheapness - where-as other brands I've been using, Ball, Fender, Markley, are fully wound down to the ends. If I want wire I can go to the freakin' hardware store! Rotosound are over priced junk. These strings will never will touch my basses again!

Comments about Rotosound RS66LD Long Scale Swing 66 Bass Strings:

These really are great strings. Really punchy, versatile tone with a bit of a twang, but they still give you the "thick", heavy tone you'd need for jazz and R&B, depending on your bass/amp settings. Plenty of people complain about how harsh and abrasive the strings are on your fingers and frets. I haven't played them long enough to know about the effect on frets, but they're really not bad at all on your fingers. I'm no professional, but if these are too harsh, you should probably develop some thicker calluses.

My only complaint for these strings is that the sound quality that makes these strings shine doesn't last long at all. Once they're broken in, they still sound OK, but nothing compared to when they're fresh. Quite disappointing. To keep that sound, you'd probably have to replace your strings every 4-5 days. Sucks, but until that happens, these strings are great.

Try them out.

Better for certain applications

Comments about Rotosound RS66LD Long Scale Swing 66 Bass Strings:

Let me start by saying these are excellent strings. Good feel nice sound and cool look (I always love the red wrap). I bought these for a P Bass with vintage pickups, 58' I think. These strings produced a great vintage tone not to bright or harsh but still zingy like rounds should be. They do lack the clarity of other stainless strings though and that is what I was hoping to get. I would say that they sit above flats but under the brightness of fresh nickels like Ernie Ball Slinkys. The attack on these are well suited for picking style as well as a vintage sounding finger style. They don't have the harsh finger sound of most stainless strings and remind me of a perfectly broken in strings right out of the package. These drive great from clean tube amp breakup to fuzz, and I feel this is where they shine. If I where to pick the perfict bass for these I would say a Fender Jazz because of its inherent growl. If you are tried of the harshly bright round wound strings but don't want to commit to flats these are the strings for you.

Comments about Rotosound RS66LD Long Scale Swing 66 Bass Strings:

I love these strings! The mid-range burp and growl are amazing. There's discussions about how hard these strings are on the fingers, but I don't see any difference between these and, say, nickel wound strings. I'm definitely a Rotosound guy now. Will settle for nothing else.

If you can handle the pain.

Comments about Rotosound RS66LD Long Scale Swing 66 Bass Strings:

Best sounding strings available (in my opinion). There is a price however. They are gritty to the touch and rough on the fingers. If you wrestle grizzly bears and put cigarettes out on your tongue you should be fine.

These are awesome strings. I picked up a set a few days ago and I'm in love! These strings are brigt high and punching lows. They work well in drop-b also. My only comlplaint is that they are kinda rough at first and take some getting used to.

Amazing!

By Robert S

Comments about Rotosound RS66LD Long Scale Swing 66 Bass Strings:

These strings are the best bass strings ever! This particular kind of Rotosounds were designed by John Entwistle back in 1966, so you know they're good. Aside from that endorsement, they sound absoluetly amazing. Perfect for "lead bass". Extremely bright; they sound like a piano if you use enough treble. I use them on an American Deluxe Jazz Bass, and I can go from piano clear to deep bass by simply switching pickups. A word of warning: these strings aren't for drop tuning, they lose a lot of tone. But if you play with standard tuning, these strings are perfect!
