Overview

What do you get when you combine an interactive analog synthesizer with realtime parameter control and a keyboard with one of the most popular and highly rated digital sound libraries in the world? You get the Roland JD-Xi, an analog/digital crossover synthesizer that is the perfect instrument to address the needs of the contemporary creative musician.

Tiny, mighty, and affordable, the JD-Xi puts a true analog synth engine, Roland™s famous SuperNATURAL synth sounds, and many other creative tools under one hood. Equipped with 37 mini keys, this compact instrument delivers fat, warm analog bass and lead tones with ample controls for hands-on tweaking, plus polyphonic PCM essentials like pads, strings, brass, and more. Create impressive loops in a flash with the pattern sequencer and built-in drum kits, and explore expressive vocal textures with the gooseneck mic, Vocoder, and AutoPitch. Small in size and large in versatility, the JD-Xi is all about big sounds and big fun!

Analog and digital synths in one keyboard
With its unique crossover sound engine, the JD-Xi provides the best of both worlds: the warm, smooth response of classic analog, and the clarity and versatility of modern digital. The newly developed monophonic analog synth section features saw, triangle, and square waveforms with pulse-width modulation and an analog filter, plus an independent sub oscillator for low-end power. Two digital synth sections offer 128-voice polyphony and a wide range of high-quality SuperNATURAL synth tones, including pads, strings, electric piano, sound effects, and many others.

Gooseneck mic for vocoder, autopitch, and other vocal effects
The JD-Xi comes with a sturdy, high-quality gooseneck mic that brings even more fun to the party. Using the Vocoder, you can sing into the mic and control the tone and pitch via sounds played on the keyboard. With AutoPitch, it™s simple to achieve the exaggerated, robotic vocal sounds that are common in today™s pop and electronic music styles. There™s also a cool Auto Note function that allows you to œsing JD-Xi synth sounds without touching the keyboard!

Build loops with the four-track pattern sequencer
Using the intuitive pattern sequencer and large selection of onboard sounds, you'e able to create and perform sophisticated music with only the JD-Xi. The sequencer offers four separate tracks”two digital synth parts, analog synth, and drums”allowing you to build rich-sounding loops for any genre. Real-time and step recording modes are provided, along with a special TR-REC mode for programming in the style of Roland™s classic TR-series beatboxes. It™s easy to play patterns and tweak sounds as you perform, and many preset patterns are built in for jamming right out of the box.

Pro drum kits for high-impact beats
Packed with a variety of dynamic drum kits, the JD-Xi delivers quality rhythm tones to suit any groove. Included are many types of electronic and acoustic kits, and the drum instrument assignments are conveniently labeled above the keys for quick identification. You can also personalize the kits for your music by adjusting filter, envelope, pitch, and pan parameters on individual drum sounds.

Shape sounds with impressive effects
The JD-Xi includes four simultaneous effects sections for enhancing any sound. Effect 1 and 2 provide selectable processing options such as Bit Crusher, Slicer, and Ring Mod, while dedicated Delay and Reverb sections make it easy to envelop sounds in spacious ambience. Each effects section can be turned on/off separately for the three synth sections and drums, allowing you to shape your mix with many creative combinations.

Awesome Little Synth

    Comments about Roland JD-Xi Synthesizer:

This Synthesizer is great. Small and light but packs a massive sound. The 4 layer sequencer is great. The sounds are amazing. I use this with a Tr-8 and it is a wonderful combo. Keys are a little small but I just hook a full size keyboard controller to it when I need full range full size keys. This was worth every penny. Vocoder is very good. For the price I am very Impressed.

    Comments about Roland JD-Xi Synthesizer:

I have a more in depth review up on my website, but:

Bottom line: Sold my Miniak after getting this. For me, the improvements were more panel knobs to tweak things live, and more intuitive font facing sequencer. It may only be 4-tracks vs. the Miniak's 8, but you get a lot more polyphony with the 2 digital synths, and the drum samples are quite good. The analogue bass is pretty simple, but since I got this to add some color to my existing set, I don't mind the simplicity. I also did find that you can set the pulse-width to modulate in the menu, though the pulses don't get extremely narrow. Using the vocoder or auto-note disables the analog synth. It's unfortunate, but you can only use one or the other. There could be a limitation due to the memory or processing power of the internal CPUs.

There is quite a bit of functionality built into the JD-Xi at a fairly low price point. The synth engines aren't quite as complex as other synths at similar price points, but those synths are also their own beast, and lack some things that the JD-Xi is capable of. (for example, the Ultra/MiniNovas lack multi-timbrality, but have a deeper synth engine) The MikroKorg lacks polyphony, whereas the Roland has 128 voice true polyphony on each of the two digital synths (benefits of a watered down SuprNatural engine?). I would view the JD-Xi as a great starter synth/pattern sequencer, or possibly great for integrating into an existing setup for a different palette of sounds. I've started working with a jam band, and I would not hesitate taking this on stage alongside the NL2X for additional sonic flavor.

It my case, it offers a bit different sonic possibilities and integrates well into my setup (the Miniak was always a bit of a pain on integrating into stuff). For some slightly more complex synthesis, I still have my Nord Lead 2X, and I think the JD-Xi compliments it well. My master keyboard can split to 4 zones, which can overlap, so I can effectively layer all 4 jd-xi synths.

    Comments about Roland JD-Xi Synthesizer:

Roland JD-XI went to the party, and it made Korg and Moog cry.
Ever sit in a friend's small car and realize how massive it is when you get in, optical illusions fits this JD-XI, the "toy" look goes away when you turn this power synth on!
No other mfr has what this synth offers. I was setting this thing up with Ableton and that's nice and all, I just have more fun playing with the synth itself than using a DAW.
Notes: The Vocorder does not record, you will need to do that in a daw. Can you imagine the memory it would take if it did?
Shift button is your friend, you will use it alot.
Naming a pattern when saving is highly annoying cycling through the letters. Use Shift left arrow to delete quickly.
Use Shift arrow to quickly run through the banks.

            Comments about Roland JD-Xi Synthesizer:

This board is my main Compsition tool for my Band's electronic based music. It's easy to get your ideas down quickly and begin arranging parts to become songs, especially the drums. The drum kits are punchy and huge. The digital parts have a lot of great patches right out of the box and the Analog part is a tiny bit thin but you can beef it up with the resonant filter and the onboard effects. The recent update added a shuffle feature and a couple other tricks.

It's been a great buy for me. Worth every penny.
