Radial Engineering Tonebone Hot British Tube Drive Effects Pedal (102226206)
Availability:

Big, fat, mega-searing tube tone without modeling!

The Radial Tonebone Hot British Tube Drive Effects Pedal is tube overdrive distortion at its best! It's the perfect choice for huge, chunky rhythm; fat, scooped tones; and soaring, screaming solos. You get that natural, even harmonic distortion only a tube can provide - from the sound of a 4x12 double stack to the power-chord mayhem of metal thrashing over barbed wire, it's all here.

5 knobs and 3 switches make it easy to sculpt your tone the way you like. Level provides overall output level control to your amp. High and low EQ knobs let you fine-tune the tonal character, while the contour knob works with the Voicing switch to boost or cut the mids. The drive knob adjusts the input level for optimum distortion. For switches, the Top End offers Bright, Flat, and Dark settings to shape the feel and overall tone. Voicing shapes the tonal range to flat, scoop, or extra-fat. Mid Boost gives you a 7dB or 12dB boost to give your solos extra meat to cut through the mix. The heavy-duty footswitch controls a true-bypass circuit and a bright red LED can be seen on any stage. Includes power supply.

  • Good, not great

As reviewed by Dogstarr1 on 9/25/2006

Having owned both the Radial Tonebone Hot British and the Classic, I think the Classic is a better pedal. In fact I recently sold my Hot British to a friend who had a terrible little solid state amp and really needed a tube somewhere in his chain. The Hot British is far from a bad pedal, it's a good one really, very quiet for a high gain pedal and capable of a pretty wide tonal range, though not as versatile as the Tonebone Classic. The Hot British is supposed to be a "Marshall in a box", but you get what you pay for and Marshalls are fuller, deeper, smoother. The other issue I have with the Hot British is that it definetly adds it's own sound rather than allowing your amp or guitar to show it's own character. Of course I was using a Strat(American Strat with a Humbucker, though) so maybe I should have tried it with some other guitars.

This thing is a gem. It may cost a little more, but it is worth the price.

  • Hot British

As reviewed by Steve on 10/31/2006

I got the Hot British pedal in a trade a year ago and was pretty impressed with it. You can sit and tweak for hours, there's so many options with this pedal. Covers anything from a light crunch to a somewhat heavy medium gain sound. The Radial pedals are great. The Hot British doesn't sound bad through a solid state amp, but really shines with a tube amp. It's considered to be a "Marshall-in-a-box", and is pretty convincing and sounds better than the Marshall MG's.
