Nice Affordable Snare

By Drumhead1313

from Dover, OH

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

Wow! Pork Pie has really created an awesome drum. This drum is very cheap in price compared to most other drums of its quality. It is very comparable to the Ludwig Black Beauty. Tune it low for depth and softness, or tune it high for crisp attack, great response, and high end crack. Its versatility makes it great in so many different musical environments. The Big Black looks and sounds very expensive, yet is so affordable. Overall it is a beautiful looking, sounding, and performing drum, I am very pleased.

Great snare for an affordable price

By phrenzik

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

This is one sweet snare for the price. It has a very full tuning range. You can tune it way low or crank it up really tight and get an extremely cutting sound. The tube lugs are a nice touch. This is a nice all around snare.

WOW

By Berserker

from PA

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

This is a great snare. Pork Pie hit a home run with this one. I bought it a week ago along with an Evens EC2 batter side snare head with a reverse dot. The head cuts the metallic overtones inherant in the snare. I played it on a gig this past Saturday and received a ton of complements on its sound and depth. A guy in the back of the room told me how it came out and just punched him. Unmic'd! This snare is a keeper. I am VERY particular about my snare sound and I just love the tone! I sounds like an arena snare. I am very happy with this purchase. I have 10 ply maple, 8 ply mahogany, a Pearl Joey, and this one leaves them all in the dust! Hands down my favorite. The only thing that I noticed with it is that you must be careful engaging the tension rods into the crome plated BRASS tube lugs. The steel rods could strip out the brass. Go buy one.

GREAT snare

By Dave

from East longmeadow, Ma.

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

No matter how you tune it,high or low, it rocks. I customized it a bit with die cast hoops, Dunnett throw off , and a 42 strand snare and still got a drum that easily blows away snares costing twice as much. Also, the color and the tube lugs make for one good looking drum.

Great looking snare with an awesome tone to match!

By DrumHead297

from Kent, WA

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

This Pork Pie Big Black snare is totally happening! The 6-1/2" beaded brass shell sounds deep with a wonderful TONE only a brass shell can deliver and rimshots will destroy you! Crips & clear stick response on any part of the batter head with minimal snare buzz. I usually tune my snare drums fairly tight and the Pork Pie BB absolutely delivers! It sounds very close to the snare tone of SOAD's John Dolamayan on the album Toxicity which was a Tama 6-1/2 x 14 Bell Brass snare. The Pork Pie BB is an awesome a copy of the a legendary classic snare drum (Ludwig black beauty)from the beaded black chrome brass shell, tube lugs, to the Ludwig-style throwoff without the hefty price tag. Truly a classic with a tone of it's own. I replaced the the stock head (which doesn't sound bad at all) w/ a Remo Coated Ambassador. I would like to thank Charles from Drums dept. at Guitar Center Tukwila, WA for being so helpful and giving me an awesome deal on the Pork Pie BB snare. I'm very happy with this purchase and the Pork Pie BB is definitely a keeper.

Big Black Attack!!!!

By YardDogg

from Stone Mtn., GA

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

Wow, I just purchased this drum recently from my bud, Terry (pronounced--"Turry", LOL!!!) who works at the Atlanta GC. I have been very pleased with the sound and the versitility in tuning it either high or low. The depth gives it a very nice punch while the metal shell projects all the way to the back of the venue. This snare replaced the stock snare that came with my mid-level, Mapex kit which had just absolutely fell apart and left me stranded. I was very excited to learn that the Big Black would not break the bank while looking and sounding great! I thank Terry for his time and recommendation, as with all GC employees who are always offering their own, honest opinion in helping you select the right gear for the right price.

Awesome Snare

By David Johnson

from Athen, AL

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

I have six wood snares from rosewood, bubinga and several maples. I wanted some type of 10 lug steel snare and was intent on buying the Ludwig black beauty but when I compared the Pork Pie to the Ludwig, I honestly could not tell any difference except for the price tag. This drum is very versatile when tuned high or low. Excellent snare response. Light ghost notes are clear and precise. Rim shots can burst ear drums. When tuned low the brass shell give a fat tone and tuned a little tighter gives a good staccato for funk or rock. Great drum. You won't be disappointed.

Big Black Cuts It!!

By Henry Jolley

from Fairhope, Al.

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

Well again I am throughly amazed by a product that is in many ways similar to another top manufacturers product. I bought the Big Black on a whim after seeing many good reviews on line and playing one at my local Guitar Center store. I am a die-hard Ludwig and Gretsch player for over 40 years, and this Pork Pie snare can stand with the best of the best. I had no trouble pulling any sound I wanted to out of this snare. You could spend a lot more for a brass shell snare, but why would you? And by the way I own two original engraved Black Beauty's and a number of Gretsch snares, this one is now one of my "new" favorites.

Cracking

By Chad

from California

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

This is a crackin drum. If you could break a 2x4 over your knee with every back beat you would be close to the sound of this drum. Nice deep sound, sensitive to ghost notes, a sharp stroke in the middle and its loud, and rim shots ring beautifully. I got it because I wanted more choices, and I wanted a drum that would be even more distinct than my steel Pearl Piccolo aux snare. The Big Black Brass Drum fits the bill, and the price dosent break the bank. I would definitely purchase this drum again.

INCREDIBLE

By Lukinas Prime

from Buckley

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

If i had the opportunity to have ten snares of my choosing, i would buy ten of these and tune them into ten distinct tuning ranges. I have had this snare for about five months, and everytime I sit at my set i marvel at its incredible tone, volume and sheer beauty! The deep 6.5 inches gives the drum (when tuned low) a deep and desirable rich tone, and when tuned hot, the tone emitted brings an experienced drummer pure joy. I would match the high tuned state from this drum to any piccolo snare. This is an incredible snare and i would recomend it to any drummer.

Back in Black

By Jon Lee

from Austin, Texas

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

I traded in my 13"x7" Pork Pie Little Squeeler for this snare, and thank gawd I did. I've used a Chrome Steel drum for the past 15 years and wanted something different. The Maple didn't work for me, and I couldn't stand the uncontrollable ring. This brass beauty though is a very very nice change. There was just a little too much ring for me with the stock head, but switching to an Aquarian Response 2 Coated fixed that with a few key turns. I don't have any muffling on the drum whatsover, and when compared to a $1,000 Fibes Fiberglass snare, the Big Black won the me and the band over in the studio. Very good cut up front with the guts to go with it. The one drawback...it is made in Taiwan, so your going to have those little knicknacks from drum to drum as far as quality control is concerned. I do notice the tension rods becoming loose in the rimshot area, but nowhere near as bad as the 13"x7" Little Squealer. I'm debating on a Die-Cast hoops to see if this corrects the minor detuning issue. All in all, this is a great $300 Brass snare. I would love to compare this to a Ludwig Black Magic or Black Beauty in the studio just to make sure I'm not listening to smoke and mirrors.

Outstanding!

By JIMMY LARSON

from Lincoln, Al.

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

I just picked up this snare. I wanted a 6.5 x 14 as I already have a steel and a maple 5.5 x 14 snares. I wanted a deeper fatter sound. Boy did I get it. This thing is awesome. I put a Remo Powerstroke 3 batter and a Remo Snare side Ambassador on it. After tuning it up I got the perfect balance of resonance and power. No annoying ringing overtones. Just beautiful tight snare sound. I have finally found "The One"! As soon as I started playing it the rest of the band stopped and was amazed at the sound. They loved it. I have played multitudes of different snares in my time, over 40 years, and this one is by far the best ever. Looks like the other snares I own will be collecting dust. Thanks Pork Pie and GC. I also want to give props to GC drum dept. sales staff (Scriv) for introducing this snare to me. I told him what I was looking for and he pulled this one out. Love at first hit! Thanks again Scriv and GC.

The Mystery is over.

By Criss Sayre

from Maumee, OH

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

The Big Black snare is great. The only snare drum I have ever owned personally has been a wooden snare that has been a part of the inexpensive combo kits I have owned from time to time. I have never been able to get these snares to sound like the concert snare drum I remember from High School symphonic orchestra. Well, the mystery is over - I now know why: these $100 snare drums are not capable of sounding like a concert snare. Al, at Toledo's Guitar Center, helped me with my decision to go with the Big Black by Pork Pie. He also recommended that I put on American made Remo heads (coated Ambassador and bottom Hazy). As soon as I changed the heads and gave it a little tap - presto: the wonderful tight, crisp, precision sound of my highschool's concert drum greeted me. Unbelievable! I hear this drum is the poor man's Black Beauty - and the Black Beauty is rated as one of the best snares for brushes. Al also told me that I don't have to be concerned with replacing the stock strainer - that the P-85 will be just fine. He's right. Thanks Al for all your help. I'm very happy with the drum.

cheap awesomeness!

By Ben

from Wise, Va

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

I bought this drum at GC in Knoxville Tn yesterday. I went in looking for a great snare drum and was gonna buy a black beauty. The drum guy(who's name escapes me at the moment) told me about this drum. I always thought Pork Pie was High end custom drums only. Not only could I not tell a difference between the too but the pork pie is CONSIDERABLY cheaper! Awesome drum! It will make my Maple Gretsch jealous for sure now!

The One

By Mundo Hornsby

from Hamilton, OH

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

I have mostly played a wood snares, but when I bought my new kit, I kept coming back to the Big Black brass snare. This thing is so sweet. You can make it whatever you want, from deep lows, to high cracks. Very sensitive too for buzz rolls, and ghost strokes, and the rim shot is unmatched! I am an out of control snare collector, but if i had to pick just one, this is "the one!"

Insane sound for the price!

By JON

from ATL

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

I bought this snare a little skeptical about how cheap it was, and was a little worried because i have never had a brass snare. I got it in the mail and hit it right out of the box and was really disappointed, however, after putting an Evans HD Dry on top and working with the tuning i was amazed. It cuts through the mix like a razor and rimshots are enough to make your bass player go def. The tone is very fat yet has that sting of brass on top. The only complaints I have is that the throw off could be of higher quality, and the lugs can be kinda of tough to tweak, but it might be that they are not broken in yet. So make sure to grab some new heads ASAP and get ready for a great sounding snare.

Best for the money

By D

from Enumclaw, WA

Comments about Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs and Chrome Hardware:

I played with a lot of snares before buying this one almost 4 years ago. it's still my favorite in the "under $1200 crowd". has SERIOUS pop, a great tone, and I love the rim shot. As pointed out, it's not bad looking either! If I was to fault this snare for anything, it might be too much pop! I find it's very hard to differentiate ghost notes but that could be my own weakness ;) great snare!
