The 1K is an entry-level Martin uke with upgraded wood. The one I received on special order had highly figured koa with heavy, bold striping that may not be to everyone's taste. My 1K is nicely crafted but the Martin decal at the top of the headstock appears different than the ones I am used to. It is very bright and shiny. The playability of the instrument is very good and the finish is perfect. The projection is quite good and the tone of the uke is also very good. Sound wise the uke is better than most in its price range but my advice is to spend the considerable extra money and get the Martin 2K if you can possibly afford it. It is an excellent ukulele. My Martin 2K has superior sound both in quality and projection and suited to any level of player.

Not the quality I expect from Martin

1st Uke I received had a screw on the 1st string machine head with the screw-head sheared off (the broken screw shat was still in the screw hole) but had very nice wood.
2nd Uke (to replace the damaged 1st Uke) had poor quality wood top. Obvious asymmetrical irregularity, looked like a scar (would have been rejected by the "old" Martin craftsman).
3rd Uke (rejected the quality of the 2nd) had a very nice top and back, no flaws, but has a nasty light colored blemish one fret, and a mismatched light color laminated face on the head stock (not a solid continuation of the neck wood) I kept this one which plays fine and sounds very nice.

Comments about Martin Tenor Ukulele Koa:

My second Martin from guitar center and still a very poorly made instrument. The neck has a gap as it attaches to the body, sand marks on finish, and poor finish. I was told that by pro coverage that i needed to take my ukulele into the local guitarcenter and have there tech check it out and see if it needed to be sent back.. The tech at this store exhibited the worst customer service that i may have ever experienced. The tech was condescending, told me to be quiet, offered no feedback on how to fix my ukulele and was zero help.

In general I would not suggest anyone to waste there money on this martin tenor.. Buy a cordoba or kala, have it set up professinally to lower the action and buy good strings *worths* and put on it..

    Very Nice Uke

Comments about Martin Tenor Ukulele Koa:

Uke arrived on time which has nearly always been the case for me with GC. Uke is a little plain but the koa looks great and the finish was perfect. No dings, scratches or anything. Very clean joinery and craftmanship. I have bought a couple $800+ Martin guitars that had a few imperfections but I guess I got lucky with this uke. Intonation is almost 100% dead on. Looks like they did a great job compensating and I'm quite happy with it. Sounds great and comparable to the other koa ukes I've played in this price range. Gig bag is nice, padded pretty well and much better than I anticipated.

Great Ukulele - Quality Built and Amazing Sound

    By Steven

Comments about Martin Tenor Ukulele Koa:

Got mine about a month ago. Arrived at scheduled time. Very pleased with matched Koa, front and back. Great Koa accent in headstock. I have been working on several Jake Shimabukuro tunes (Boy Meets Girl, 143 etc.) since this beauty arrived. Sound and playability are 5 star. You could pay a lot more for an Island made Uke but I'm not sure you would get a better sounding or playing instrument. For the price... don't pass it up.

I've been Blind for over 20 years and I finally decided to learn to play Strings, I've been playing for only a short time now and I'm telling you nothing beats Solid Wood and nothing beats this Ukulele from Martin, This Ukulele is fantastic the sound is great lots of punch for a little strummer, stays in tune great, I couldn't be happier, I'm going to Upgrade my Acoustic Guitars to Martin Solid wood all the way, its what makes all the difference. Big name, mediocre instrument

    By Craig

    from Mesquite, TX

Comments about Martin Tenor Ukulele Koa:

I bought this uke because it was the best sounding soprano in the store. I also trusted the Martin name. The build on this instrument is attractive. The wood is lovely and has that classic Martin smell. It comes with Martin strings which are not the best. The sound was greatly improved when I changed to Aquilla strings. The factory action is OK. No buzz for me. And, the friction tuners work fine with a little adjustment and practice. My biggest complaint is intonation. No matter how much fine tuning I try, there is no way to get some octaves to tune up. This indicates a manufacturing issue and not tuners. For $499 you can get a much better ukulele. If good intonation is important, spend your money on something else.

    AWESOME!!

    By Karen Fletcher

Comments about Martin Tenor Ukulele Koa:

I fell in love with this instrument the moment I picked it up at Guitar Center! It has a sweet, haunting sound and practically plays itself. The craftmanship is what you would expect from Martin. The Koa wood is beautiful and it projects quite nicely. Absolutely worth the money!!

    Great Instrument if only.....

    By kurt backe

Comments about Martin Tenor Ukulele Koa:

Bought this Martin after returning two Riptides that were defective. Made the mistake of playing it while looking for my 2nd riptide, it was nice! Got the Riptide but returned it due to a twist in the neck. So the third time back I bit the bullet and got the Martin tenor. It is an amazing ukulele, sounds great and plays effortlessly. I then noticed that the saddle was missing out of the bridge. Brought it back to have their luthier take care of it. I should have called Martin first and just had them send me a saddle. Was not to happy with the repair, most of the sales people said "it sounded great" it but the saddle was not fit properly. Uke also ended up with a slight gouge in the bridge, probably from inserting the saddle. I guess more of this is due to the store not Martin but the fact the saddle was not in place is why it received only stars.
