When I bought my first 12-string back in 1969 after a few tries with a couple of different kinds of strings I got a set of Martin Silk and Steel and never looked back. Forty-odd years later I got to buy another 12-string and was delighted to see Martin is still making the same strings. There is a tone these strings provide which while not as 'heavy' or 'full blooded' as some have a clarity and pureness which lends itself to selective finger-work as well as a rich body and musical blend when strummed. Put simply, I'm a fan.
I have been using Martin M200 Light Silk and Steel strings since the early 1970's on my old 12 string and on my Fender F330-12 and they are the best sounding and playing strings I have ever used on my 12 strings. I also use Martin light strings on my 6 string but not the silk and steel. They work the best for my style of playing and give me the best tone and resonance.
Okay, I'm a Lightfoot freak. I do CRT and Yarmouth Castle and many others, plus some Tyson, Taylor and Mitchell. I have tried many strings on my D12-20 and D12-35 and nothing, repeat, nothing sound this good. If you are playing other music, there are probably other string that you might like better, but if you are playing folk and don't like these, you need your fingers examined!
