I went by the other review on here and also saw it at my GC here in orlando. liked the way it looked and sounded so I bought it and I must say it sounds really good . I tighten up the skins and in the process I found that there many different sound variations you can get out of this snare. way better than the GP or SP or PDP, had them all and this is better than I expected. Going to up grade the skins later, GC recomended Remo reverse dot on top and falam on bottom, by the way I bought it after x-mas and it was $53. the throw off feels a little cheap and the snare wires could be better, but hey Im not complaining just my opinion and in my opinion I had a Mapex pro 10x5 popcorn snare also and I like this piccolo better. So what are you waiting for get this thing before they run out. A little note this little snare just took the place of my Pearl Export 14x6.5 steel snare and I love my pearl. Enjoy it I know I am ,can't get enough of it.

Great Value

By 1327510

from Portsmouth NH

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

I did not expect this inexpensive piccolo snare(bought for $38 on sale) to sound this good! You'll need good ear protection as this thing cuts through with so much crack and pop using even the stock heads. I tuned to 80 on top and 90 on the bottom and tightened up the snares a bit, used two moon gels on the edges opposite each other; this cuts down the sympathetic buzz. Very responsive batter head which makes it easier to articulate buzz rolls and crisp, clear ghost notes. The only reason I did not give it five stars is that the lugs were cheaply made and hard to tune using the supplied tuning key ( I used my own key which is thinner). I did not find any flimsiness at all with the snare throw as opposed to what other reviewers have pointed out. I will now be attempting to record using this snare and see how it holds up. I don't feel that the stock heads actually need upgrading. I like this so much that it will push my Yamaha Musashi 13 x 6.5 to the side.

Great snare for a great price!

By Kevin

from Loveland Colorado

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

I went into my local GC yesterday and was sniffing around and came across this for $59.99 and thought it was a mistake because this is so identical to the $149.99 MPX snare it isn't funny. Turns out it wasn't a mistake and with the $10 on line coupon it was $53 bucks out the door. Great snare even with the stock heads, of coarse higher quality ones will be better when these wear out. We tuned it at the store to kind of a mid-low pitch and I brought it home and applied one moongel and it sounds fantastic! Sharp cutting crack of the whip and very responsive. I compared it to a MPX snare and all I could tell the difference on is the strainer on the MPX is a little fancier and maybe different hoops, other than that I couldn't see the difference. If you are looking for a cheap auxiliary snare on the cheap but not cheap quality look no further.

Not your average cheap snare

By Conner Lathem

from Fort Worth, Texas

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

I tried out this snare in hopes that it would be better than my larger Sound Percussion mahogany snare. Well let me tell you, Mapex did not disappoint me. This snare drum is loud and bright. It doesn't sound as small as it really is. The fact that it comes with Remo heads pre-installed kept me from feeling like I had to buy better heads immediately. The snare wires are decent, too. They produce a loud snappy sound, and they don't buzz very badly when you hit the toms, either. Straight out of the box this thing doesn't take long to tune, but it does have a tiny bit of unwanted overtone. The solution? Moongel, my friend! I put one gel right on top of the Mapex logo printed on the head, and it killed the unwanted overtones while still maintaining good resonance. If you add another gel at the bottom of the head (opposite to the first one), it gets rid of all the overtone without killing the sound of the drum, and the result is a great punchy snare sound. With better heads and wires, I'm almost afraid of how awesome this thing might sound. This great product from Mapex has been the main snare on my kit for quite some time now, and I love it.

Sweet snare

By jason hughes

from Clearwater, Florida

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

Picked this snare up about a month ago. I wanted a piccolo snare for a while, and at this price I could't loose. The snare sounds great, esspecially with the tension high. It has a nice snap to it. I did have to add a moon gel to get just the sound I was looking for. This thing sounds great from funk to jazz to rock. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that I question the long term durability of the snare throw off, it feels a bit cheap, but no problems so far. But for the price of this drum I'm not complaining. Great snare.

Happy accident

By Brian Johnson

from Hobart, Indiana

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

I picked this thing up on a total whim (about 6 months ago), mostly because it was inexpensive and shiny. Within about 3 minutes it completely replaced the snare in my Pearl Export 20th Anniversary kit. This thing cracks! I cranked it way up looking for that typical piccolo sound, which you're not going to get with this snare, but whatever; I LOVE this thing. As others have stated, the throw off is a little cheap feeling but it's not even a concern- it doesn't effect the giant sound of this little drum at all. Why wouldn't you buy this? It's totally affordable and I just told you how awesome sauce it was. Stop reading- start playing.

Great sound!

By Scott

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

i got this snare for Christmas and I love it! I have it tuned medium-high, and it sounds like a machine gun. I absolutely love it, but replace the stock heads as soon as you can, I've played maybe three hours on it and it's already dented, and I don't hit all that hard.

Perfect Rock & March Snare

By Damien Pace

from Wilmington, DE

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

I purchased a Mapex Steel Piccolo for me last Christmas and i gotta say, the sound stunk when tuning it. I brought it to use with my schools band, and put Moon Gels on them and inside our gym, the piccolo just turned into the perfect rock drum! We are playing Queen's We Will Rock You & Another One Bites The Dust and my snare rocked right through. I'm tempted to take it back home along with the moon gels and replace it with another snare. Also, great price! 60 bucks + Moon Gels will easily get you a perfect rock snare. What would you get? A 13x3.5 for $60 or a 3x13 for $120? I would recommend a padded drum case or this little piccolo will be bouncing and crashing into your case.

Mapex Piccolo steel snare

By Ron

from Pittsburgh, PA

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

Great crack and very sensitive. The bad thing is the strainer loosens up while you are playing. I have to screw the strainer back to where I like it during the set and on breaks. I am a funk and smooth jazz player, and not a brasher, so the strainer should not be vibrating loose. It has done this since day one.

My life saver!

By Christopher Lopez _

from Arecibo, PR

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

Last week I was practicing before a gig, and suddenly the throw-off of my main snare failed, and I entered on a panic! Then I remembered I had my little but mighty Mapex snare on my car, so I took it out for a ride. I was nervous because all the parts were still the stock ones, but still I tuned it to the lowest tone possible (personal preference), loosened the wires, and put on a piece of tissue paper with tape on the batter head, and I could not believe the great sound that I got. It had an incredibly big sound for such a small snare, but it worked just great. Now I take it with me everywhere, feeling confident that this drum wont fail me if I treat it right.

Wow! What a nice drum for a low price!

By Chris Stephens

from Florence, KY

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

This was on sale for $39 and at that price, I just couldn't pass it up. My 8 year old son has been wanting to learn drums and I was afraid to spend a lot of money if he decided after taking a few lessons he wasn't interested. I was pleasantly surprised at how great this drum sounds and I hope it holds up for a good long time. I know if my son later decides he isn't interested in drums after all, I will keep it for myself and enjoy it. Definitely money well spent!

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

So I saw on the t.v that this was on sale on 4th of July. Not to mention this came with Remo heads :D I've been playing for 5 years so I decided this would be a good backup and whatnot. Boy this baby did not disappoint. Tuned this thing up and behold - ear heaven. These heads keep the snare sounded good. Overall I'd recommend someone willing to spend a few bucks.

      good snare for the price

      By bruce perkins

      from Parkston, SD

Comments about Mapex Steel Piccolo Snare Drum:

This is a great sounding snare. Nice pop, not overly ringy. Decent heads. If your hard hitter you might consider thicker heads. Perfect as a secondary snare. My only complaint is that the snare strainer has a tendency to loosen when playing backbeats with rimshots. Great finish, nice lugs. The tension rods even use nylon washers. Price is very resonable. Will consider Mapex when I gear up and purchase another snare drum!
