I bought these mics as my first condensers. They are inexpsensive and they sound great. The 990 works great for vocals, acoustic guitars and as a room mic. The 991 is a highly sensitive mic and works well for recording ambience or the fret board of an acoustic. Using these two mics together produce a great atmospheric sound. These are the first mics I've purchased for recording and I'm pleased with them. If you're an amateur at recording or not looking to spend alot of money these mics are for you.

To start, let me point out that these are two $60-$90 mics that are put together in one package. So it is a good deal. These are good lower quality mics and a great starting point for learning. The mics have a bit of a digital/metal sound coloring. This this might not be a bad quality, and can sound nice for certain styles. Also, it can be fixed through some simple EQ so it's not such a big deal. The average listener might not notice this but it is very obvious when listening to a dry unprocessed recording. The box and mic holders that come with this package are made from cheap plastic. In this respect, there are better mic packages out there that are the same quality or better and have a better visual appeal. I would consider other mic packs before finally deciding.

Great "Bang for the Buck"!

By Randy Allen

from Westerville OH

I bought the MXL 990/MXL 991 Recording Microphone Package on sale! I don't record professionally but I'm blown away by the quality of the sound from these two mics for the price. I'm sure you can get a better mic but you will have to spend a whole lot more money. I compared the sound of these mics vs several dynamic mics I have and the difference is amazing. The 990/991 mics have a much fuller and clearer sound for both recording and live performance. Next to the Fishman SA200 solo amp, this may be the best purchase I've made. The package includes a nice carrying case and mic stand adapters for both mics. For the money, you can't beat it. (I do recommend a pop filter to protect the 990 mic or you can make one out of some old nylon and a coat hanger.)

This mic is garbage.

By Steven DeSantis

from Clifton, NJ

I don't understand how everyone posts 5 star reviews for this microphone. I understand this microphone has been reviewed and almost everyone who tried it has said it makes vocals or instruments sound "low" or "bassy" and that it picks up "very little background noise." All of these are false. From the second I took the microphone out of the box it has been nothing but garbage. Everything sounds like it is recorded off a webcam microphone. Very electronic sounding, very deep, extremely low and bassy, insane amounts of background noise are picked up (even when the mic is completely isolated from all other sound sources.) I used the mx 990 and the 991 both with the M-Audio Buddy pre-amp and have connected it to various different computers and speakers. This microphone is horrible, even for what a great price this is I would not consider this a "good buy."

Really Powerful

By Anthony Le Calvez

from San Diego California

These Mics. are great and are super powerful. They can detect the slightest noise and have great sound for recording. They pickup great noise, especially the small pencil mic. is great and super handy for instruments.

OK for Recording on a Dime

By Christopher Franklin

from Virginia

I've had these for about 2 years. Over that time period, I used these and other microphones from various companies. The only real selling point for this product is getting two microphones. If you're on a budget, these aren't bad, but I'd advise shelling out an extra 50 and getting one GOOD microphone. While I don't have anything truly BAD to say about these mics, they aren't the greatest - everything tends to sound either extremely harsh, or have way to much bass, regardless of the acoustic quality of your studio or the placement of the mic. If you absolutely have to have 2 microphones for $100, ok, but I would seriously advise spending just a little bit more for one great mic that'll sound good regardless.

Good mics , quality for the price.

By shane

from boulder, co

I have them for about 4 months now and can say they are a very nice mic for a homestudio, for vocals and percussion too, the 990 pics up everything even the flies outside! so very sensitive, love the 991 for tabla recordings! I may get another pair but they are not 79.99 anymore! too bad. beware that 990 is a brick, my stand falls over .

Great Buy

By kdaniel

from austin tx

I bought this set a couple of weeks ago. On testing it I was very happy with the results. First, the adaptor on the M990 fit an old stand I had downstairs that required the smaller threaded mic head. So that was a good start. Next, the sound quality of both of these are fantastic. I also like the fact they come in the padded case. I use a PreSonus Firestudio Project and have been recording all of the elect/acoustic guitars inline. The M991 will give me the opportunity to double record a guitar inline and also thru the mic and get some softer more acoustic sounds. Someone on here wrote this was a great buy for the price they asked, and I have to say that I agree with them.

I was amazed, with one limitation.

By Greg Ball

from Dallas, TX

I'm not a major pro or anything, but I do have my slowly growing collection of microphones. The 990 is the one in this package that really impressed me (when the reason I bought the package was that I got such a good deal on the 991 - better than I could buy a 993 separately). Anyway I lined up my vocal mikes and set them identically on the board. To my ears, the 990 is much warmer than say the 220 perceptron that cost me more than twice as much. The 990 has a low end warmth that sounded similar to the proximity effect on an SM58 when the singer is up close.(which is what I want sometimes for intimate vocals) but the large condenser 990 is much clearer, fuller, and brighter. No surprise as a condensor that its a "hot" mike, and when used with a judicious bit of compressor, it felt easy and relaxing to sing with for a male or for an alto female. The downside is that I heard distortion faster than my other mikes at higher SPL. Might not notice if you didn't have it turned up like I did for a certain song, and certainly controllable by the singer. All in all a very happy accident, but I don't have any of the extremly expensive options to compare it with.

Surprising Clarity

By Daniel Sartorius

from Bolton, MA

These are my first two condenser mics. I've heard the mxl 990 to be the "industry standard" for a starter condenser mic. Figuring that two good mics are better than one, I asked for this kit on my wish list. when I got it hooked up to my audio interface and monitored each mic, I was astounded at the clarity and low-static representation of what I said into the mic. I've used some more expensive microphones, but these ones are at least 99% as good as any, and for a fraction of the cost. I was also relieved at the fact that it came with a case for protection, as I had no other place to store the microphones. I would defenitely reccomend this package to anyone who is new to the recording game.

Awesome Package

By Will Geronimo

from Chicago, IL

I bought this package as a X-Mas present, actually 2 of them. Tested them on my drum kit and was very pleased with them. 990's you don't even have to crank them, they are so senstive that I have my Trim pots set at 0. They capture the entire drum kit nicely as I only mic my kit using 4 mics. The 991's are just as good but they get a nice tighter sound. I compared them to my Nady CM-88's and they are close to them, except the 991's you don't have to crank them either. For my overheads I have a nice selection to choose from and I'm very pleased with these products especially since you don't have to break the bank to own them!! Great stuff!!!
