Their compact design allows easy placement in drum kits or expansive percussion setups where space is an issue. And the sound is amazingly close to that of standard bongos. The macho (small drum) of this set is great. It sounds just like a regular modern bongo drum, very crisp, with an authoritative "pop". It's also very easy to play, you don't have to work very hard to get a lot of clear projection and articulation.
Unfortunately the hembra (large drum) is a total dud. It has none of the desired properties of a real bongo hembra: no warmth, no "thud", not the short dry decay we want. Instead, it is just like a mini conga head, or even a rototom. It rings out with a long decay, and with none of the punch of the real thing. I have tried dampening it with adhesive foam and other materials, but I haven't found the magic combination yet. I'll keep trying, because I like the macho and I like the portability of this set (along with the compact congas); but honestly it's a major hassle, and I am not sure I will ever get this thing to sound good.
