Awesome Speakers. They are a lot better than i first thought them to be. They can handle quite a bit without crackling or going sour on yah! Do recomend for the budgeted musician!
For background and review qualifying depth, I have 35 years playing experience (guitar). I've always used unconventional guitar rack rigs with clean amplification and monitor style cabinets and derive my sound through synth use and guitar modeling. I believe I have somewhat of an ear for quality sound. Challenge 1: Size Being that I have 35 years experience, I no longer can or desire to lug heavy amps or cabs around so my interest in these monitors was primarily the size. They are compact and light weight and that's good. The angles, big rubber feet and pole mounting hardware on these cabinets is good and the sturdy handle makes them easy to carry. So for me that's a 5 stars. Challenge 1 met. Challenge 2: Now for the sound impression; Out of the box these are OK. They are loud and I'm sure they could handle a decent load from a good amplifier and would work fine for most rock gigs even a slightly louder rock band. I would not use them for a very loud metal or thrash type application. The out of the box sound is OK but not what I was hoping for. They sound flat and compressed. I don't think they are very articulate. The low end doesn't really punch to well and the horn is really weak. I compared them to a set of Yamaha BBT110's and they we no match in sound clarity or depth, volume was comparable. The Yami's were much more crisp and the bass was punchy and focused. But again the Kustom's were not bad. These are nice little monitors keeping in mind the tiny cabinet the speakers occupy. My fix was replacing the stock speakers with different drivers. I liked the size and placement options of the cabs so I swapped out the speakers and crossovers. For $140.00 a pair, why not. A nice set of Celestions and a decent set of crossovers and I have to small, medium weight kick a$$ monitors now. The stock bass driver is not bad but the HF horn is pathetic ( they would have been better off using a coax) and I wasn't real happy with the press board speaker mounting front panel either. If you do anything when you get these swap out the horn it's useless. I give these 4 stars because they met my main goal of being compact and versatile. The sound out of the box is not bad it just lacks the clarity I wanted to hear. These would work just fine for 85% of normal monitor applications when budget is a major consideration. What can you expect for $70.00 a cab. My mods to the cabs gave me exactly what I was looking for, 2 compact, medium weight floor monitors with crisp highs for my synth sounds and great bass and mids for the guitar side of my sound. I'd recommend even out of the box for the price point.(But replace the horns)
