I bought this bass guitar a few days ago and over all it's not a bad instrument. I like the blue finish and the twenty two frets and the bass boost effect. The bridge pickup isn't as bright as like the fender jazz bass though. But I like the split coil neck pickup. Usually I like guitars & basses to have their jacks on the front side of the body, but I like it on this bass. This bass needs a nine volt battery for the pickups & EQ's to work so that's a small problem, but in my experience with this bass I find it's best to use a Hyvee brand battery because it fits better than other brands because others don't seem to fit to make the bass work.

3rd time is still a charm

By Phil "Fingers" Mk Krakken

from Glenpool, Ok

Comments about Ibanez GSR200 4-String Electric Bass:

I first purchased this bass back in 1989. It took me about 12 years to wear out the frets and put divots in the upper pickup near the D and G strings. I have been playing bass for close to 24 years now and have never looked back. This bass is arguably THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK! I replaced it w/ the same around 2002. Unfortunately, it was stolen around X-mas time last year and I just got around to replacing it with (you guessed it) the SAME bass. Sweeter was the fact that this bass has gone down in price! Playing a considerable amount of time, the lightweight body has definitely saved me shoulder-wear yielding countless extra hours of practice w/o tiring. My own experience proves if you know how to play, and run the bass through decent equipment (current setup: SWR 4004 Workingman head, & Ampeg 4x10 cabinet) you're going to sound just as good as plugging in a $1K+ bass. I have played other models, but long-term, this IS my favorite to pick up.

Not bad for beginners

By Rmaz76

from NYC

Comments about Ibanez GSR200 4-String Electric Bass:

This was the first bass I bought when I started. Overall, if you are a beginner, it sounds fine. Good to learn on, good to practice on. BUT this bass is that it has no mids at all and the deep bass sounds muddy (typical of Ibanez since they are heavy metal/rock basses). I understand this is a entry level priced bass, but if you can only buy one bass and you want to start playing with a band I'd save up just a bit more and get a used Fender standard (P or J) or even one of the new Squire Vintage Modified basses.

Great first or last bass

By MetalAddict

Comments about Ibanez GSR200 4-String Electric Bass:

Just as it's description says this is an exellent first bass(it was mine nine months ago). Along with my newly purchased Ibanez 35 watt bass amp(see my review)this bass was a great value for the Ibanez quality. This guitar has helped me trust the Ibanez name and I will continue to buy from them. This bass is not a should buy, it's a must buy.

great bass

By Aaron G.

from Huntington, Indiana

Comments about Ibanez GSR200 4-String Electric Bass:

The Ibanez GSR 200 is an awesome bass! I bought mine at Guitar Center in Greenwood, Indiana for 200 bucks and it was worth every penny. The Jewel Blue color is killer and the bass booster is pretty cool too. The only problem I have with the bass is that the bass boost can often make my Fender Rumble 60 amp distorted when turned up all the way. Other than that, I love the EQ and the fingerboard is slick plus it's so easy to fret. Overall, Ibanez deserves an award just for coming up with the idea of this bass.

The perfect bass for any player

By MT

from los angeles, ca

Comments about Ibanez GSR200 4-String Electric Bass:

This was my first bass and will be my last. I was very impressed with the quality as well as the price. I have the black one and the finish was great, making it a very attractive bass. The frets were not spaced too far apart, allowing an easy reach for small hands such as mine. The strings that came with the bass were also quite impressive as well, providing a rich tone demonstrating great durability. The body of the bass itself is very durable, as mine has been knocked around by young children and still has not had one dent! Though the GSR200 is priced for a beginner, it certainly isn't just limited for the novice. Whether you've been playing for a day or a decade, this bass will definitely meet or exceed your expectations. I would recommend this bass to all music genres. Plug this baby into a Peavy Combo 115 and you've got yourself a keeper. This is simply the best, and will outplay all others within its range.

My first bass

By Aleks

from Somewhere over the rainbow

Comments about Ibanez GSR200 4-String Electric Bass:

I went with my dad and my cousin who plays bass to a guitar center to get a bass, I had looked around for a few days and was planning on getting a dean demonator. But when we got there, they didn't have any, so i looked around and triend a few. Right as I picked it us I knew it was the one. The tone was perfect, the pickups were perfect, everything was... well, perfect. Highly reccomend this as a first bass to anyone.

Fits my Wife

By Gary Tompkins

from Maryland

Comments about Ibanez GSR200 4-String Electric Bass:

I picked this bass up at GC 3 week ago as a starter bass for my wife. She loves it! The bass needed no setup and was ready to roll straight out of the box. My wife is small but this bass is easy for her to handle. It is one of the lightest full scale basses I have seen; perfect for a woman of womanly stature! The fit and finish are beautiful. Ibanez does a nice job with their construction. The sound is sweet! The resonance and tone of this bass has to be heard to be appreciated - very clean! The pups are just fine too, they are very clean and quite yet have plenty of punch. I see no need to swap them out. 5 stars for the GSR200! This is a quality instrument at a working mans price. Very good buy - you won't go wrong with this ax.

Good for new bass players, or practice

By Fuzzball

from Ida, MI

Comments about Ibanez GSR200 4-String Electric Bass:

I tested this guitar while I was looking for a new bass for my studio. First off this is not a very expensive bass, but it is a good beginner bass. The bass was easy to play, but the action was a little high. The tone was a little flat and it lacked a bit of punch. The guitar had a lot of low end but it seemed to just lack some tonal characteristics that make a great bass stand out. The guitar is built well and the finish is nice. I would consider something else if you play slap bass or if you play metal or hard rock, but if you need something simple this may be right for you. This is a very good introductory bass for beginners.

Price and Quality Surprising

By Fuzzybutt

from South Bend, Indiana

Comments about Ibanez GSR200 4-String Electric Bass:

I went through alot of bass reviews and suggestions. Went to Guitar Center and Steve in Mishawaka recomended this bass also. Other than having 2 volume knobs, this bass has surprised me alot. I did change the strings as recommended to Rotosound 66 strings. This bass has great tone. With the string change, it plays really sweet and smooth. With the active passive knob, this bass has great range. This bass is good for the beginner and intermediate player. You can't go wrong with this one....

This Bass is a BEAST!!!!!

By phil-i-am

from New York, New York

Comments about Ibanez GSR200 4-String Electric Bass:

This bass is an awesome one. Its got nice lows and brilliant highs. Size is graet for small players. Besides the fact that when the bass is newly bought the strings can be kind of dry and hard to move on(which can be solved by getting new strings), this is definetly a great starting bass for new players.(BTW knobs are volume, treble, middle, and bass)

The Toyota Corolla of Bass guitars

By Johnathan Burgoyne

from Tucson,AZ

Comments about Ibanez GSR200 4-String Electric Bass:

My friend picked up a Steinberger bass a few years ago and was urging me to pick up a bass so we could jam and learn together. 2 years ago I decided to start looking for something inexpensive to learn on and came across this bass on craigslist for $150 including a line 6 amp and stand. I replaced the strings with some Dean Markley Skullbusters. Bought a Digitech bp90 for dirt cheap from a guy going overseas to serve our country and I haven't been disappointed. Upon playing it for the first time my buddy said "Wow, this has some great action and a really smooth neck compared to my Steiny. This is a cool bass. You got a great deal!" That meant a lot seeing he is a bit of a bass elitist and despises anything Ibanez. I'm a hobbyist so I use this to jam along with the drum machine most of the time and also use it to play Rocksmith on the PS3. I play at least an hour every day and besides loose knobs and a tuner nut coming loose, I've had no problems. Even with my skills improving over the past couple years I really can't see myself ever needing anything more than this. Maybe a 5 string eventually, but I'll probably get one of those from the GSR series as well. It stays in tune for months at a time. The action is still set at the factory spec at the bridge and nut without me having to mess with it. It does look like the truss rod could use a tiny bit of adjustment to add some relief to the neck due to the thicker gauge strings. The bridge pickup can be a bit hissy at times but I can usually take care of that by messing with the knobs and some swear words. I like that the headstock doesn't look like a Fender hockey stick type. The finish has held up well. I rarely clean it and only oil the frets when I change strings which isn't very often. It's not a bad looking bass but it's not gonna stand out in a crowd. Has what I would describe as "The girl next door" appearance. Average. This one has the jewel blue finish that looks black in the right lighting. The only issues I've had is when it comes to slapping, popping, and tapping. It will do it but it comes across kinda twangy or metallic. I just can't seem to really get it to resonate correctly. Most likely I just lack the skill or the pickups are lacking. Really doesn't bother me much cause I tend to play more bluesy doom metal type stuff. I don't think labeling it as a beginner or intermediate bass is really appropriate. It's more like a middle of the road workhorse. It doesn't sound badly in any style but it doesn't stand out as great either. Just enough of a "WOW" factor to keep ya coming back. It's like that trusty old late 90's Toyota Corolla your Mom drives with 200k+ miles on it. The one you make excuses to take out just so you can go spin backwards donuts in a dirt lot somewhere. It just keeps going no matter what type of beating you put on it. If you just wanna play or learn to play and you're not an ego maniac I'd highly recommend this daily driver.

Cant beat it. Buy this!

By Zach Hanson

from Menominee, MI

Comments about Ibanez GSR200 4-String Electric Bass:

I've had this bass for about 4 years and it has never let me down. The neck is amazingly thin and easy to play. Frets are spaced nicely. The pickups allow you to get so many great tones out of this. From real poppy highs to chest bumping lows using the bass boost nob. This is the lightest bass i have ever played, period. I love it being that i play 4-5 hour bar gigs. It really saves on the shoulder. And this bass is durable, believe me. Mine took a fall, strings down, from the tailgate of a truck onto blacktop. Didn't hurt a thing. Literally only like 3 one millimeter scratches in the finish. I was amazed. Over all i love this bass. I would recommend this to any level of player. You cant beat it for the price.

Great Bass!

By Caleb

from Ohio

Comments about Ibanez GSR200 4-String Electric Bass:

I just stopped into guitar center today after thinking over buying a bass. I play guitar and my nephew wanted to get a bass and learn how to play. So I bought the bass hoping I could learn to play as well and it is amazing! It is light weight, the transparent red looks beautiful, and the sound is great too, no buzzing. This would be a great bass for a beginner-intermediate player, and possibly a back up for anyone who plays. Maybe I will swap some EMG's in it later.

Comments about Ibanez GSR200 4-String Electric Bass:

I bought the jewel blue one and named it "Jewel". No, not like the singer. I thought it was totally beyond all expectations. I played it for a couple of years before I lost it when my marriage fizzled. Now I want another one.

I'm no novice. I've been playing guitar for over 35 years, and Jewel was my third bass. I liked her better than a Fender Jazz. I want another one.

To nitpick, I didn't like the square corners on the top of the neck (past all the frets), so I took the neck off and rounded them. Problem solved.

I also didn't like that the threads stripped out on the E string bridge piece when I tried to back it up far enough to get the intonation right. But I think the real problem is solved with an Earvana nut.

Anyway, if you can't afford to buy the bass everyone is telling you to buy - or even if you can - buy this one. If you don't sound good on it, you don't need a Fender or a Rick, you need lessons.

My Burple Bass Rocks!!!

By Stephen

from Carrollton, TX

Comments about Ibanez GSR200 4-String Electric Bass:

I play guitar. I got Rocksmith 2014 on PS3 and noticed it worked with guitar and BASS so I decided to buy a bass. Why not, right!? I wanted to find something inexpensive and I really wanted something besides black, preferably blue. I found this one in jewel blue. I ordered it from GC and got it super fast, thank you GC. I have to say this bass is awesome for the price. Perfect for someone just starting. I had to do a little setup on it to clean up a slight fret buzz on E2 and a few of the frets had sharp metal barbs sticking out towards the top of the neck. I bought a drywall sanding sponge as suggested online and cleaned them right up very easily. I set the intonation and off I went. It's so smooth and comfortable to play. Very lightweight. My 8 year old granddaughter can hold it. I want to say it's smaller than most basses, but me coming from guitar might be an advantage. The color is not really blue, more of a purple. The first thing my wife said when she saw it was "Purple!?!". In certain light it looks very blue but other times it's purple, so BURPLE it is. The finish is super clean and really looks awesome. I thought the purple was going to bother me but it just looks so clean and tight. All the hardware is chrome which looks really good. The strings that came with it sound and feel pretty good. I have had it for about a month now and they still sound good. As for sounding muddy, it can if you push the bass boost all the way up. I prefer medium boost to keep the mud out. I am also able to get that clean sound by cutting the boost off and cleaning the tone up with the tone pot/knob. The knobs are one of my only complaints, they are plastic and feel very cheap to the touch. I hope they will hold up. As for the sound, I run it through a Peavey Vyper VIP2 and it sounds really good. Nice cleans, deep lows, good funky sounds, responsive pickups, and my mid's sound fine and crisp. I am not sure why others who have reviewed had problems with the mid's. The neck is unfinished and thin so it plays smooth and fast. Overall, very comfortable to play. I rated this a 4 out of 5 from a beginner's viewpoint although I know what good instruments are. It gets a 4 because of the knobs feeling cheap and the frets having sharp edges and really it should be a 4.5 because it's just so much fun to play. By the way... it works great with Rocksmith 2014 on the PS3. I would recommend it to others as a nice starter to intermediate bass and its worth every penny. Thank you Ibanez and GC.
