Overview

The Hohner Golden Melody harmonica has an attractive 1950s look thanks to its rounded shape and closed-sided, full-length covers. An especially airtight harmonica with a strong, full-bodied sound, the Golden Melody is the only Hohner diatonic harp with equal-tempered tuning, which makes it especially suitable for melody playing.

Curved cover plates extend the entire length of the Golden Melody harmonica, providing increased resonant capacity. With a comfortably curved shape, the Golden Melody harmonica's smooth, rounded corners fit nicely into the palms of your hands as you play. Hohner sets the Golden Melody harmonica's reeds close to the open-framed mouthpiece, so it responds to the subtlest of commands-making the Golden Melody perfect for overblowing as well as for bending. You'll find taht the Golden Melody's sound is unique in its class with a slightly different tuning that produces full, rich, melodic tone.

Although it's a favorite harmonica among gospel and hymn players on Sunday mornings, the Golden Melody can definitely hold its own in the blues bar the night before. The Hohner Golden Melody harmonica is a favorite of great harpists such as Pierre Lacocque of Mississippi Heat, jazz virtuoso Howard Levy, and Levy's renowned Cuban-Canadian student, Carlos Del Junco. Its unique design, coupled with an airtight, dark red, plastic body sets the 10-hole Golden Melody harmonica apart. Its equal-temperament tuning makes the Hohner Golden Melody a natural for country music. And there's no doubt that your Golden Melody is the harmonica that can bring down the house on blues and rock numbers.

I teach harp and gig regularly and the Golden Melody is the latest in a long line of harps I've tried. I consider them to be consistently the best out the box, along with Hohner Crossover. They are a great shape, very airtight, and seem to require the least adjustment out the box of any harps I've tried so far, I've bought harps 2x the price that have had greatly inferior quality control that I've had to set right. As proclaimed they are great for overblows, to the point i'm incorporating overblows much more into my style thanks to the Golden Melody. A minor drawback is they take a long time to break the reeds in, they can be very stiff to bend for the first few weeks, but if you treat them nice and gentle for that period the reeds seem to last forever.

I bought a few harmonicas, but I did not play any as much as I played my two Golden Melody harps in the key of A and D. The tone and flexability of play were truly wonderful.

However, over the years I've discovered some negative qualities that I feel may counter my praises. The reeds of these Golden Melody harmonicas tend to stick more often than my other harmonicas. When I first take them out of the package I always gently flex the reeds, and after playing regularly take apart my harmonicas to clean them.

On my Golden Melody harmonica in the key of A I found that the 5th draw reed became irreversibly jammed. First it dropped from playing it's G note to only playing a C#, and then it became completely unplayable. I tried to coax it loose, but found that I couldn't get it to play a note at all.

My primary complaint now that I retrurn to MF to order a new one is that I feel the price does not reflect the quality. I really want a new Golden Melody, but I don't want it to break down again.

Comments about Hohner 542 Golden Melody Harmonica:

The Hohner Golden Melody was designed for melodic playing, not so much for chords, but I've never had any trouble wailing the Blues with it. The rounded sides make it perfect for cupping in your hands with a bullet mic, and, contrary to what I was told, the work just fine in a harp rack. If you doubt that this Classical and Jazz favorite harmonica can Boogie, consider this: The late-great Blues-whooping legend Sonny Terry played Golden Melody harps exclusively during his final couple of decades. From Sonny Terry to Howard Levy... need I say more, grasshopper?

Comments about Hohner 542 Golden Melody Harmonica:

All harmonicas, including Golden Melody, require reed adjustments and that's simply a matter of making the gap bigger or smaller. Both blow and draw reeds need to be adjusted together. My biggest complaint about the Golden Melodies is that the reed plates extend too far into the mouth. Remove the covers (quite easy compared to the Special 20's which are are a super pain to reinstall), and file down and round out the protruding plate. Leave enough extention so that your lips can still grip it. After filing, scrape the edge to make it smooth. Metal feels better than plastic, which makes these harmonicas nicer than the Special 20's. By the way, the Golden Melodies have as good and bluesy sound as the Special 20's or Blue Midnights.

Comments about Hohner 542 Golden Melody Harmonica:

Don't expect to get a playable harmonica straight out of the box. I bought a set of the Golden Melody harmonicas in the keys of G A B C D and E. They all needed gapping adjustments. But my biggest disappointment was with how uncomfortable they were due to the reed plates extending too far (by contrast my Special 20's have a soft plastic ledge and my Blue Midnights only have a little of the reed plate protruding). I ending up spending hours hand filing the plates to be more flush with the plastic mouth holes (I would instead recommend repositioning the reed plates which would require modification to the comb screw holes). I feel that Hohner should have made the comb extend out more, and can't understand why they didn't do so. In messing around with trying to soften the mouth hole edges, I discovered that the plastic used is extremely crumbly and seems to emit a foul odor. The crumbly plastc might have good acoustical qualities but it's quite weak.

On the plus side, the rounded ends of the harmonica feel good against the lips. The sound is full and sweetness. The reed plates don't seem to be consistently aligned with each other but at least, unlike Hohner's Blue Midnights, there's ample screws holding down the reed plates. If you have the ability and time to fuss around with its shortcomings, the Golden Melody will ultimately be one you can enjoy.

For the price this is a very consistent harp. Hohner has been putting out a great product for the past few years and for the money this harp can't be beat. I play a lot of different harmonicas including customs, I carry the Golden Melody in the keys that are rarely played and when those keys do come up I am often amazed at how good this harmonica plays.

I ordered on Mon., paid 2 days shipping and had the package on my doorstep Wed. The 'A' harp had a loose cover screw. It's factual... I have a screw loose.... The case was in a box with bubble wrap and that was in a larger box stuffed with crumpled brown wrapping paper. Excellent packaging. I will be playing Thurs. My last Thurs. and Sat. gigs left me feeling naked without them. I dislike thieves... The sympathetic email response is why I chose MUSICIAN'S FRIEND for purchasing!!!!
