NEW REVIEW - simply the best

I've tried many different harps but always come back to the Special 20. If you're serious about your playing, don't waste your money on others. This is the one!

NEW REVIEW - harmonica is nice, but the box damaged

the harmonica plays nicely. I like this harmonica, but unfortunately the harmonica box was damaged when I received it, which is a shame. I definitely needed that box to be functional. otherwise, the harmonica is great.

The Real Deal

It's just a harmonica, right? Ten holes. No frets or keys. What makes one harp better than any other? In the case of the Special 20, pretty much everything. I've been blowing harp for a couple of decades now, and I've used a lot of harmonicas. Every now and then, I think I'll try this or that Hohner model, or some other make, but I always come back to the Special 20. Why? Because it's simply the best blues harp I've used. Part of that is that it suits my style. It's bright enough that, overdriving an ancient tube amp through an equally ancient mic, you can still HEAR the notes. That's a big deal, since there are quite a few harps out there that get muddy when amplified. On the other hand, I find that it's also louder than some other models when unamplified. Loud enough that I can wail over pretty much anything. Another thing is that it's just an exceptionally well-made instrument. It has a plastic body, unlike the basic Hohner blues harp, which is wood. That means that after playing for a few months [and, let's face it, drooling throught the instrument -- it happens], you don't start getting splinters in your mouth. It's chrome and not painted, so you don't wind up with paint chips on your teeth. With proper care, this harp will last a long time, and keep sounding great. In all my years of playing harp, I've only had a couple of minor problems with the Special 20 -- one stuck read, and one harp with a buzz at the low-end. Given that I've owned dozens of these, I find that to be a very minor quibble, particularly considering the number of problems I've had with different brands. If you want to play the blues, play this.

Hohner Special 20

As a relative newcomer to the harmonica scene, I decided that I would try several different brands and types of harmonica. Although the Hohner Special 20 was recommended to me by several other harp players, I had to decide for my self. I tried 3 or 4 other brands of harp and played them daily for months. After replacing reeds in a couple of them and trashing some others, I purchased a Special 20. I have been playing my Special 20's now for over a year and have yet to blow out any reeds on them. While some other harps have a dirtier, blusier sound, for pure sweet single notes and ease of play I have not found a better harp than the 20. I still own several other brands in different keys, but I am gradually replacing all of them with the 20. Another great feature of the MS series Special 20 is that you can replace the reed plates, which saves about $10.00 over a whole new harp. I am attending Jon Gindick's Harmonica Jam Camp this fall and the Hohner Special 20 is the harp I will pack!
