I've had my eye on this Gretsch for a long time. I took advantage of the Trade In trade Up promotion. I ordered it and picked it up at my local Guitar center. The guitar out of the box is unplayable! Thankfully, I have a guitar tech that knows his stuff. I dropped it off and the next day it was ready. He told me the neck wasn't straight and the floating bridge had to be adjusted. Also, he hd to raise a few of the frets because they did not line up properly.Once the repairs were complete ($100.00), it plays beautifully .also, the frets had to be leveled off! Every new guitar out of the box needs some adjustments but this one NEEDS it bad. Now, it sounds and plays like a dream. The 4 Stars are due to the poor condition upon receiving it. Like I said, It now plays like a dream!

Overall, the G5420 is a nice instrument for the money. But mine came with several cosmetic flaws on the finish, a scratch on the Bigsby, and very noticeable fret buzz. The Guitar Center repair department didn't get the buzz out. So, I had to spend almost $120 for a luthier to do a set-up using 11s, since it still buzzed with 10s. Now that it's set-up properly, I really enjoy playing my Chet Atkins music on it. It has a very distinct tone (very different from my ES-175), but it also seems to pick up my thumb pick noise much more than my Gibson. Overall, I believe it's a good buy for the money, if you can live with any cosmetic flaws it may have or having to possibly spend more money for a set-up (a risk of buying via the internet)!

Be prepared to overhaul

By Kirk Lawler

from Chicago, Illinois

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I would give this guitar 3.5 stars, if that was an option. On the plus side, the neck delivers great playability, the stock pickups are very good clean (but muddy and abrasive distorted), the finish is expertly applied, the Bigsby copy is properly installed, the stock no-name tuners aren't bad and the clean interior speaks of a well constructed body. Negatives: the nut was gray plastic junk that was way too high and badly slotted (replaced it with bone), the Adjusto-Matic bridge rattled non-stop and killed the tone and sustain (replaced it with a brass Compton bar bridge with no moving parts), the bridge base was not shaped to fit the archtop at all (had it sanded down), the wiring was substandard (had it ripped out and CTS pots with orange drop capacitors put in), the cheap pick guard was installed crooked and rattled (took it off) and the binding in the f-holes was unfinished (sanded it down with emery cloth). While the guitar was in the shop, I also had the tuners replaced with 16:1 Grover Imperials which enhance the appearance and stay in tune better, and had the tech redo the wiring for coil tapping. These were non-essential upgrades but well worth the investment. For an $875 guitar that does not come with a case, the number of cut corners here is inexcusable. I also have a comparably priced Godin 5th Avenue archtop that was built to a higher standard. I would have considered one of the new Ibanez Artstar archtops had they been available when I bought the Gretsch. I kept the G5420T because it fits me like a glove. The guitar sounds, plays and looks like a semi-pro model now, but it took a substantial investment to whip it into shape.

Loving the look, sound and feel of this axe

By Richard

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

No doubt, I love owning and playing different guitars, but these days there's so many to choose from, it sometimes confuses and boggles my mind. There's the cost of those awesome looking guitars, price tags going upwards of $3000 and more ... The Guitar Center sent me a brochure, the other day, focusing on acoustic guitars, and the one on the cover was priced at nearly $11,000, sincerely, a guitar with that kind of price tag, better play and entertain me all the way, without my human touch. Thank God there are guitars for sale that a guitar player like myself can afford and still be pleasing in all aspects wanted by a player of my taste. The G5420T is just one of those guitars ... With its classic body styling, good color choice to choose from, ease of playing, and sound, that should be expected by a guitar, such as this ... Surely it hits its mark. I chose the Sunburst color, for me, it was most appealing and stepped-up its overall look. The action is comfortable and playable all the way up the neck, only problem is the Low E String has a slight buzz to it, adjusting the bridge may extinguish that flaw, or sanding the frets, if that fails. Another issue is that the pick guard had some scratches on it, I noted that right out of the box, and a sales person is addressing that issue with the company, for a replacement guard. I love the sound of this guitar, its sweet mellow tone is perfect for jazz licks, and the toggle setting, lends it to country picking. All in all, I'm so glad I bought this guitar, it really complements my other guitars, my Gibson Deluxe Les Paul, my D18 Martin, and my Fender American Stratocaster, its unique styling and tone construction, makes it a welcome addition to my guitars, thus far. I hope my comments are helpful to others.

Great value and super fun to play

By wendall hagen

from St Paul, MN

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I have had the 5420 for about 4 months. I owned a 1961 Gibson Les Paul SG that was stolen years ago and currently have a 1977 Gretsch Axe with Humbuckers, Takamine EF341SC acoustic, plus many other lesser guitars so this is hardly my first guitar and certainly not the most expensive. Simply, I fell in love with this guitar when I heard the sounds that come out of it. I could not believe the range of sounds and the smoothness and sweetness that I seem to only find in hollow bodies and semi hollow bodies. This guitar can be configured to sound GREAT no matter what the genre. No other guitar I have had, has been able to sound great over the range of genre I like to play. The Good: Finish is outstanding and the neck is flawless with no torques, no waves, and no height issues with a fret. I typically play to about the 15th-16th fret and the guitar is totally clean to those frets using about a 5/64" low E to 1/16" high E string height with stock strings. Did I mention the sound? General playability is very good and let's be real, ..., this guitar is cheap for the performance delivered. The Not So Good: The tuners are functional at best. I put a drop of oil down the tuner body and dry powdered graphite in the nut groves. The starting twist on a tuner is a little stiff but smooth once tuning is started. A set of Grover 18:1 Sta-Tites may be in the future if for nothing else I like a bigger tuning knob. The guitar needs some serious setup when purchased. The neck needs to be straighten and the bridge needs to be properly placed for accurate tuning. Don't sand the bridge bottom. It is designed to make a 4 point contact. Overall: This is without a doubt the most fun guitar I have ever owned. Unlike the boat anchor solid bodies, the 5420 is much lighter making it easier to deal with over a few hours. It has weight but it is not the back breaking weight of some solid bodies. I have some big amps but picked up a Fender Frontman 25R (it is real light!!!) for small family and group settings I now play. Fantastic sound at non-head splitting, non-foundation breaking, small room level volumes. For the money, the 5420 is a lot of guitar!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

as an older person, I have an unusual narrative: took lessons as a much younger man while growing up in NYC from a pretty serious teacher; quit and then, 40 years later, have gone back into it. My first step, last year, was to walk into the Guitar Center in Somerville, NJ and ask: "do you think this is even possible"? The answer I got from Mikey B. and Chris C. and all of the wonderful guys there was: "Of course". So, after starting back in on lessons with Ryan M. and later Brian W. (both terrific btw), I bought an Epiphone Les Paul Standard and started practicing away. And so, I decided to treat myself to a new toy and dove in on a new Gretsch 5420T in Aspen green. Right out of the box, the thing looked classy (even Mikey B. said the color looked a lot different/nicer than the web page seemed to show. The second I got it home I started playing it and cannot put it down! Nice, low, easy action right out of the box plus that classic twangy Gretsch sound! Also a great guitar for those learning as the fretboard and the overall mechanics are sooooo user-friendly. So, in closing, two pieces of gentle advice: try one of these Gretsch 5420T Electromatics and you will get a real sense of what is behind the Gretsch mystique. And buy it at Guitar Center because they stand behind/support everything they sell and everyone they support!

      A Twang Beast!

      By David Treadway

      from Friendship, Arkansas

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I've had my 5420 a little over a month and am very satisfied with it. This review is prompted, in part, by others who have found that the guitar needs a fair amount of setup. I did NOT find this to be the case, as setup was done in-store at Guitar Center in Little Rock. (Insert large props here.) Tone-wise, I am in low orbit halfway between Duane Eddy and early George Harrison. I hook into a LovePedal Gen5 echo box (for that Setzer slap) and on into a Vox AC15 circa 2011, Top Boost channel with the Cut switch at about 2:30, bass and treble knobs to taste. The sound of the Black Top Filter 'Tron pickups took a bit of getting used to, as I was raised on P-90 Gibsons. I tried a Telecaster for a year, but somehow it never would make me sound like Vince Gill. The treble response was way too much, no matter where I set the tone knob. There's PLENTY of top end on the Gretsch, but there seems to be a sharp cutoff somewhere. It adds to the definition without causing a nosebleed. I've found that the pickups go all mushy if I hit the front end of the amp too hard, but a little distortion is a fabulous thang. Overall, the guitar is well-made and substantial. The soundposts seem to tame the feedback from a non-musical howl to more of a musical sustain. Nice! The rosewood on the fretboard seems to have some sort of satiny finish on it, adding to ease of playing. There are minor tuning annoyances, as I expected with that old school wiggle stick, but they're easy enough to compensate for. I may replace the tuners eventually and the nut could use a little filing, but those are the only tweaks I can see coming. I am completely satisfied with the 5420. I would have given it 5 stars except for the minor tuning problems and the fact that the only one in stock that day was ORANGE. Everybody knows us Guitar Studs prefer black!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I had always wanted to own a Gretsch since seeing George Harrison and Chet Atkins back in the 60's. More recently learning Brian Setzer style rockabilly the Gretsch fever returned. My wife was aware of this and surprised me with a new G5420T (orange) from Guitar Center. My son is a drummer, and she loves to go to Guitar Center with us, so she knew where to go. The staff at Guitar Center Montgomery were very helpful to her, can you imagine my surprise! The case was shipped to our home separately, no problem. The Gretsch Electromatic series are very nice, solid guitars. Neck profile is comfortable, action was good, adjustments if necessary are easy. Sounds great through Vox AC30 and Vintage Deluxe Reverb. Played it live with a put-togather band recently, stayed in tune even with liberal use of vibrato. Guitar Center Montgomery seems to always have a few in stock.
        Try one, you'll like it!

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I have several guitars and this is the very first I have not had to set up or make minor adjustments. I tuned it and went. No buzzing anywhere, no noise plugged in, everything solid. It was even perfectly intonated. There is not one tiny blemish and the matching neck, f-hole, and body binding look really nice. Only thing negative is personal in that I like the neck on the fat side, but this plays like butter. Now I'm looking at better amps to do it justice. I'm having fun messing around with different tones and settings/effects, but the neck pickup with tone knob dialed back is soooo nice for jazz tones, which is why I bought it.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar about a month ago from a store. I was concerned that some of the reviews complained about the guitar not being set up properly when ordered online, but they did this for me at the store. The guitar sounds great. I bought it primarily to teach myself Rock-a-billy and it does sound ideal for this. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to a friend.

I played this in the store and loved it. Great tone, easy playability. Then they gave me a different one to go home with. I didn't play it in the store, which was a mistake. It simply doesn't sound as good as the one on display and it has some foam built into the guitar top that doesn't come off. Maybe they gave me the lemon they had in the back?

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5420T Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Sort of picked this up on a whim during a visit to my local GC on Xmas Eve, it seemed to be calling out to me from the used guitar section with it's vintage looks. Granted the model I purchased is a 5120T, which I understand is the previous model to the 5420T, with the newer model having a pinned bridge (versus the 'floating' one on mine) and possibly different pickups. However, I fell in love with the feel of the neck (similar to Gibson's slim taper?), the sound of the pickups, and that gorgeous tone that only a hollowbody can produce, sounding quite stunning played through the clean channel of my amp (with reverb cranked, of course!), as well as the drive channel (from 'Spirit In The Sky' tones, and Moody Blues to Nugent). The construction of this axe is amazing for the price (considering it is manufactured overseas), from the orange stain finish with cream binding, to the easy playing neck with rosewood fretboard and 'neoclassic' thumbnail-clipping fretboard markers. I was, however, a little concerned with how the supplied Bigsby tremolo would keep in tune, as I have heard tales of it's inadequacies, but am pleased to say that I have no more issues with it than my American Standard Strat tremolo system. Am very pleased with this purchase after laying out 5 1/2 C's, and just ordered the hardshell case for it so I can keep this sweet baby protected! Try one out if you get the chance, I believe you'll be impressed ...

This may be the current best buy on the market for the quality.
I have some vintage Gibsons and fenders and bought this for a friend. It sounds fantastic and is fun to play.
