Overview

All the sumptuous ingredients that makes the Les Paul name great are in the 2012 Gibson Les Paul Standard Electric Guitar in spades: your choice of a skillfully carved plain or AAA figured maple top on a mahogany back perfectly joined to a mahogany neck, Burstbucker Pro pickups each fitted with coil-split capability, locking tuning machines, and neck and body binding, this is truly a full-featured, loaded Les Paul and now features a compound-radius rosewood fretboard. Also, new œmodern weight relieving is carefully applied inside the mahogany back to provide outstanding balance while optimizing the sonic capabilities of the guitar.

Burstbucker Pro Humbuckers
Gibson' drive to recapture the magic of the original œPatent Applied For humbucker pickups of the 1950s culminated with the introduction of the Burstbucker line in the early 1990s. In 2002, Gibson followed up this innovative accomplishment with yet another breakthrough in pickup design”the Burstbucker Pro, designed specifically for Les Paul Standards. The Burstbucker Pro features an Alnico V magnet (instead of the Alnico II), which offers slightly higher output and allows preamps to be driven a little harder to achieve a more natural break-up. Like all Burstbuckers, the Burstbucker Pro has asymmetrical coils”true to the original PAFs”which supply a more open sound. The Burstbucker Pro Neck is wound slightly less than the original PAFs, while the Burstbucker Pro Bridge is slightly overwound for increased output. The Burstbucker Pro pickups are also wax potted to allow loud volume pressures with minimal feedback. A high-quality Switchcraft output jack ensures a perfect connection to your cable allowing the purest signal to leave the guitar.

2 Push/Pull Tone controls
In addition to controlling tone, one is a phase switch which allows for new tonal flavors, especially when used in combination with the coil-splitting feature. The other engages the œPure Bypass circuit which sends the bridge pickup signal straight to the output jack to deliver the most direct, pure and dynamic signal possible.

Coil Tapping
The bridge and neck pickups can each be split via their own push/pull switch on the volume knob to achieve a single-coil tone. This coil-tapping function allows you to instantly achieve brighter, snappier tones from this humbucker-loaded guitar, to replicate the sounds of other classic guitars equipped with single-coil pickups, and to return to the Les Paul Standard's thick, warm, powerful, full-humbucking tone at the push of a knob. Frequency-tuned œFat Tap coil tapping creates a fatter single coil tone with great output and balance when switching from dual to single coils. Single coil configurations are specially designed to be œhum-reducing.

Neck Profile
The 2012 Les Paul Standard is fitted with Gibson' classic ™60s slim-taper neck profile, which is the more modern, slim-tapered neck most commonly associated with the Les Paul and SG models of the early 1960s. A compound radius rosewood fingerboard allows for comfort, speed and precision at all points up and down the neck. It accommodates lower string height while achieving unrestricted, smooth, upper-register string bending.

Locking Grover Tuners
The 2012 Les Paul Standard is outfitted with locking tuners from Grover, which deliver ease of use through a standard tuner and positive locking mechanism that securely locks each string in place. Simply insert each string through the string hole, turn the dial on the bottom of the tuner to lock the string, and begin tuning. Each string can be tuned to pitch in less than one complete revolution of the post. These Grover machine heads feature completely sealed components with an improved 18:1 tuning ratio.

Gibson Hardshell case included.

Incredible Tone

By David Mc Manis

from Vienna VA

Comments about Gibson 2012 Les Paul Standard Premium AAA Electric Guitar:

So after 15 years of playing on a Fender Big Apple Stratocaster I finally broke down and paid the big money for a Premium Gibson Les Paul. I've played some vintage Les Paul's from some of the guys I'd play with, and I was always left with a feeling that Gibson Les Paul's just seemed.....well...me. They just fit me. I purchased this Gibson Les Paul Standard Premium in the Fireball finish and Wow! What a stunning guitar. But what really struck me was not only the tone from the BurstBucker Pro's it was the incredible length of sustain. Even without an amp you can feel the sustain throughout the body and neck. It just resonates tone. Everything about this guitar impresses me. I've heard from some of the guys I've played with that the "modern weight reduction" doesn't have the sustain that the older ones do. I just haven't found that to be the case and I'm a complete tone-a-holic. In fact I've found no merit to this folklore whatsoever and better yet, I don't have a sore shoulder and back when I've had it on my shoulder for a few hours. Bottom line, this growls like a Monster, and plays like butter. I couldn't ask for more tone and playability than this. And I now I know why these are legendary guitars because hype can only take you so far. So if you're on the hunt for a true Gibson Les Paul, this is certainly one I can honestly recommend.

Excellent!

By Gregory Daisey

Comments about Gibson 2012 Les Paul Standard Premium AAA Electric Guitar:

I have been playing guitar now for 20 years. I have owned many guitars of various design. Without a doubt, this has the sweetest tone and features of them all. I was impressed with how it was packaged and believe it or not this guitar was in tune when i took it out of the box! The coil-taps are a nice feature as well. I mostly played a Strat and an Ibanez Rg series before and this allows me to go back to that single coil feel if i want to. I also purchased a VOX tube amp to compliment this new guitar and it is the perfect combination. If you're considering buying a Gibson, spend the extra money and get a Standard. I played the Studio, and while it is still a nice guitar, it is far from the quality that you find on the Standard.

Great Guitar

By Robert Yashinsky

from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan

Comments about Gibson 2012 Les Paul Standard Premium AAA Electric Guitar:

I have lot's of guitars and have played many. But this is my favorite guitar by far. Mine is a Honeyburst and I bought it a month ago at the Guitar Center in Southfield, Michigan. It is a beauty and this view is shared by everyone who sees it. The sound is incredible even without the use of the coil tapping or putting the pickups out of phase (which is a pretty nice sound). The Premium Plus is everything I wanted in a guitar and I'm so glad that I spent the extra cash to buy it. I tried less expensive Les Pauls, but this one has it all. Love the locking tuners (it's real easy to change the strings and the guitar stays in tune better than most) and the smooth 60's neck. The guitar is a bit heavy for me at times, but the tradeoff is a fabulous sounding guitar. But overall, this is just a great guitar on all levels (sound, looks and playability) and I highly recommend it.

Worth every penny!

Comments about Gibson 2012 Les Paul Standard Premium AAA Electric Guitar:

First off, I'd like to say I'm sure this review won?t get posted, but here goes anyway. Picked this up after trading in my Classic Plus. While the Classic Plus is a phenomenal guitar, the 2012 Standard is WAY better. The coil tap/phase/pure push/pull pots give you just about every conceivable combination of tones you could think of. The asymmetrical neck carve and compound radius fingerboard are like butter. Best playing guitar I have ever run across. The AAA top? What can you say? It looks like it?s dipped in glass and has that 3D effect that is just stunning. Now, on to why this review will not be posted. As with my Classic Plus, right out of the box the guitar exhibited ?groves? in the finish on the cutaway and right below the strap button by the neck. This is a known issue on the Gibson forum and they are calling it ?case burn?. Best guess is that it is from the snug fitting case and possibly putting the guitar in its case before the finish has fully cured. This is not a big deal and the marks can be buffed out with 3M Finesse-it II polish, which I did. If not for the case burn, I would give this guitar 5 stars.

Awesome

By MATT WIEDEMANN

from El Reno, OK

Comments about Gibson 2012 Les Paul Standard Premium AAA Electric Guitar:

Features: Awesome! The new tonal features are totally awesome. The coil tap is amazing. Unlike a coil split, the new tap gives you great single coil sound with no hum or loss of volume. The phase switch on the neck pickup is amazing too. Finally, the bypass switch is great for lead. Quality & reliability: Awesome! It's a Gibson. What else can I say? Look & feel: Awesome! I got the new Fireball model that first released on the 2010 Limited Edition. Its really awesome. The new weight relief is balanced really well. Lots of tone and light weight. Finally, the new asymmetrical neck profile feels really great. Overall: Awesome! Gibson took a great guitar and made it better.

Best Les Paul I ever played

By Paul Edwards

from Southington, CT

Comments about Gibson 2012 Les Paul Standard Premium AAA Electric Guitar:

I purchased this LP in Light Burst 2 days ago and I can't put it down. If I do I just stare at it because it is so beautiful. I have owned an LP Custom from 1971 and eventually sold it for a Tele. I did not miss it and have saince sold the Tele to a friend. When I saw the specs on this guitar I had to try itThe coil taps and phase switches are way usefull and stealth so you can't see them out. I was so stoked by it's feel, sound, and looks I had to have it. The next day I saw GC had the coloir I wanted and jumped on it. OMG!! I can not believe how wonderful this LP is. You can read the specs.. asymetrical neck, locking tuners, bridge, and stop bar. The stealth coil taps make it sound like P90's with no loss in volume. Phase switch and bridge pickup bypassing all electronics is just too much. I have gone over this LP with a fine tooth comb and cannot find one flaw. You owe it to yourself to try one out. Best LP I have ever played and I have played a lot of them.
