The G&L ASAT Special just might be the quintessential G&L guitar, viewed by many as Leo's ultimate single-cutaway. Back in 1985, Leo Fender launched this model under the G&L Broadcaster name, which prompted a response from Fred Gretsch of Gretsch Guitars over the name just as it had 35 years earlier. History buffs will recall that the Broadkaster name is owned by Gretsch, and once again, a Broadcaster from Leo was required to have its name changed. This time around, the name became "ASAT" which is US military shorthand for an "Anti-Satellite" missile.
The ASAT Special, as the model became known, features jumbo single-coil Magnetic Field Design pickups, each with a narrow bobbin aperture for a coil which is shallow yet wide. In this regard, an MFD jumbo single coil is similar to a P-90 or Jazzmaster pickup, yet the MFD principle provides a punchier bottom end and brighter top end sparkling with harmonics. Leo further departed with the past with the addition of his innovative Saddle-Lock bridge which transfers string energy right into the body end-grain for an incredibly resonant instrument. The result is one of the most versatile guitars ever, serving up ballsy twang to searing blues to smooth jazz tones.

The G&L ASAT Special is without a doubt the best guitar I've ever played. The tone of this guitar is awesome and the sustain is very nice. It's a deeper (classic) C neck and for me, very comfortable. When you pick up this guitar you feel that it's a cut above even the American Deluxe Telecaster. People are so hung up on Fender and don't see how much better the G&L's are. If they did find out, the prices would go up...so I guess I should thank them. :)
The G&L ASAT Special (USA Made)...Wow, where to I start? My first impression when I got the guitar is..the picture does nothing for this guitar. The workmanship is top notch and the sound is as solid as the build. I've owned several Fender Am Deluxe Telecasters and none of them match this baby. It has a classic C neck so it's a little thicker than the C's you get today, but it's comfortable in my hand and a very very fast neck. The sound, the neck pickup is this babies bread and butter. Notes down to low E are crystal sharp and strong..not muddy at all. The bridge pickup is a little more twangy than your used to hearing but a very nice pickup and sounded great with the band and a very versatile. The price is low for a guitar like this. I guess the Fender name adds a hunk of change to their products. I do got to tell you...if everybody opens their eyes and ears to G&L and finds how much better a guitar they are, the price will go up. The last Fender I purchased is my last.
