  • Great vintage tone, not too bright and not thin or tinny

As reviewed by Richard Sanders on 3/8/2014

I've tried many different types of strings for my custom L-OO made by Jim Worland, similar to a 1933 Gibson design, and these sound best. The top is Italian Spruce and the back and sides are Honduran Rosewood. It's a little guitar, with a 14 7/8 lower bout, narrow waist, and 4 3/8 depth, but it's loud, surprisingly loud. Or maybe I should say it's loud with these strings. Many strings I've tried were thin, tinny, too bright. Phospher Bronze and especially the coated strings never worked out. These have some depth and can achieve a kind of bad-ass, gnarly tone when played aggressively. I use light gauge for the 1st through 5th strings, but switch out the 54 for a medium gauge 56 at the 6th string, which balances the tone better on this guitar and give me a little more bass punch. Yes, I buy two sets to get just one new set, but I don't mind because these sound better with some playing time and seem to last quite a while. By the way, the light gauge is 12-16-24-32-42-54 (medium 13-56), in case Guitar Center has them listed wrong, which they did at the time of this writing. Good strings, definitely worth trying.
