I went to guitar center one day knowing I was going to buy a guitar. I really had my mind set on the Fender American Tele but the guy there said I should try playing some other guitars. I played an American Strat, the Tele, a Gibson SG and even a Gibson Les Paul. Then he brought me a guitar I had never seen before the Fender pawn shop. When I played I was blown away. The action, tone and quality surpassed every other guitar and every guitar I've played since then. Also the price is significantly cheaper then most other high end guitars.
It was hard not to notice the Surf Green pawn shop strat hanging on the. It is one of the strangest looking get ups I've seen. The wild color, mismatched pups and, really, an f-hole on a strat? Its wierdness drew me to it. Once plugged in, I found this to be a really sweet guitar - great action with the classic strat comfort. The switching is contolled by a twist knob, which allows blending of tones. In a store on a Friday, with all the kids banging away, I couldn't get a good sense of how effective the bleding might be, but it's an awsome feature. The hard tail gives it command and sustain. The neck is pretty classic, with nice (I love lower profiles) low frets. This ugly duckling is my new obsession.
There were two of these in my local GC, one was ok and the one I bought was 100% perfect. I own lots of guitars and this is the first one that doesn't need any upgrades. It's unique and very well balanced. Love the blend control allowing you mix the pickups. Btw, it has a center decent, so you do get the "mid" position just like you would with a selector switch. The neck is probably the best I've played in the last 25 years ;-) It's great Fender finally start to experiment, love this guitar!
