I've been using the Evans coated white reverse dot drumheads for years but wanted to try the EC1 drumhead because it's a little thicker at 14mm with a 3mm reverse center dot, but still a single ply drumhead. I put this on my main snare, a Tama Metalworks 6.5x14 snare drum, a mid level snare drum, to find out if it would take out some of the brightness being it's a steel shell. It accomplished that but still retains an ambient sound with the tension fairly tight. It seems to provide a little more volume compared to other drum heads I've tried, I noticed that I don't have to hit rimshots constantly to cut thru the music, I was able to get plenty of volume just by striking the head and that was very cool! The EC1 definitely provided more depth/low end compared to any standard coated 10mm head I've used. No nasty, thin, overly bright, splatty sound at low tension or high tension. This drumhead is also more durable being thicker but still has the feel of a single ply. The reverse dot gives the sound more pop and focus which is what I prefer, just like any center dot drumhead will offer. What was surprising to me about this drumhead is the open-ambient sound. Perhaps this had something to do with it sounding louder. I'm not certain if I like having more of an ambient-open sound, for live performance this is probably very good, for recording purposes, not so sure. Fortunately, the open sound can be subdued easily by muffling it a little more. I trigger my drums so I have a Roland trigger that touches the drumhead, which muffles it slightly, but it's good that this drumhead is muffled with a moon gel or trigger because it will still ring. I was surprised about the ring it still had being that it has an internal muffling type ring around the edge and I thought the reverse center dot would cancel out a lot of ring as well, but no, it doesn't. You still have to use an external source like a moon gel to get rid of the excess and annoying over- ring. I noticed the tighter it was tuned, the less ring. The EC1 definitely looks cool being a translucent head with a silver reverse center dot that matches well with the dark grey steel shell and the black hardware on my Tama snare. I've been using the drumhead for about 3 months now and it doesn't get scuffed up or show marks as easily as a white coated head. The EC1 drumhead was worth spending a few extra bucks on. I would summarize by saying it's as good or better than the Evans coated white reverse dot head which is 10 mm with a 5mm reverse dot. The Evans EC1 satisfies my personal preference in regard to what I want my snare drum to sound like, to some drummers it may be crap, but I think Evans has a winner with this drumhead.
This head is great, I tune my snare very tight and it works so nice. Theres like no overtones and the dot makes it sound good and solid. I'll say it's worth the money.
I used Remo Controlled Sound X heads on my birch snare until a friend suggested I try the EC Reverse Dot. This head compares well the the Remo Head I was using except that it fell into the range I like much faster. The Remo Head too some major time to tune. I like the EC Reverse Dot because it can be swapped out much quicker. Also, the thicker ply of head helps to give the snare character all over rather than just in the center.
