For an 8 string pack, these sure are heavy gauge considering they're going on extended scale instruments. They are great for my 7 string though, as i just take out the .064 and string it up for standard A. Same clarity as the skinny top/heavy bottom, but with 2 giant strings on the added strings
I wrote a review earlier about these strings, but I have definitely changed my mind. I do have an eight string, and I used these for it and wow...they were not very good. The most obvious thing was the .74 string gets smaller WAY before the tuners, even for my seven string. So playing the first fret feels extremely awkward. Second, palm muting on these things sounds hideously dirty compared my old strings or even the stock strings. I also have to agree that a .54 for the E string is very ridiculous. The only thing I'd recommend these for is softer playing or if you never play chords. Otherwise, get the D'Addario or any other 8-string set.
I don't actually use these for an eight string because I only have seven string guitars. However, I think most seven string packs are too wimpy, considering the thickest gauge you can find in retail is about a 60 or so. I love tuning my guitars low (drop Ab, drop Gb, etc.), so I need the thicker bottom string. I take the 74-gauge string and use it as the low B string and then discard the B string in this pack. Then I just use the rest of the strings where they should be on the guitar. They sound awesome and the tension is great but not too tight. That being said, I have played an eight string with these strings and they're great for that too. The lower string could be a little thicker for an eight string but otherwise really good.
