*Similar review as MF, bought same colour there** Received guitar in good order. Opened large box to find well packed Epiphone box with said guitar inside. Opened Epiphone box to find Worn Cherry Les Paul P90 Special well packed inside with no damage or issue. Very impressed how this is sent from Guitar Center. MF seems to come direct from Epiphone. After unpacking, I was pleasantly surprised to find a very nice looking guitar that is beyond out of tune. Wasn't expecting it to be, strummed a few chords and had a good laugh. Couldn't help but notice not one sharp fret all the way up the fretboard, another pleasant surprise.
Tuned guitar up and played a few more chords up and down the fretboard. All sounded great and in tune. Can't believe the intonation being this good out of the box. Switch is solid and pots are firm to turn, not lose or lacking resistance. Finish is satin and does show life's finger marks which is fine, polished right off. Strings feel dry/tacky from likely a film to protect during shipping. Could wipe off but plan to restring immediately anyway. Epiphone neck plate was installed correct this time. Neck screws are thinner than I would like but are satisfactory. The big surprise comes from taking of the pot plate to find a shielded cover and 500k Alpha pots which would explain why they had some substance when dialled in. Very susprised and impressed. Thanks Epiphone, I won't be upgrading anything on this guitar!!
Now that it's restrung with Rotosound Pinks (best strings on earth) and fretboard lemon oiled, this guitar absolutely sings!! I am astounded by what I've pays and what I have. Plays and sounds fabulous. I am really pleased with this guitar. These P90's have the best in high and low bite through my Peavey Stereo Chorus 2x12. I play clean, this is the amp for it and now I have the guitar for it. Unbelievable for the money. Highly recommend getting one!!!!!

I bought this guitar to try out P90 pickups. I use this guitar to practice and as a back up guitar. The guitar sounds great. The finish is good and the electronics are solid. The only issue I had was the fingerboard has a layer of wax on it, cause my fingers to stick. The frets were also rough. I solved this by cleaning up the fingerboard and polishing the frets and I've never that the problem again. This guitar cannot hold its tuning so I ended up changing the tuners and nut. Through this guitar I feel in love with the P90 tone and I will eventually guy a higher end guitar with P90s.

With P90's!!!!....Can't be beat!

By Kharaun Campbell

from Montgomery, AL

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

I went into my local GC originally to buy LP Jr. Special Edition. Then I saw this one on display (I got worn cherry, like the LP Jr. SE). They were the same price, and I was totally amazed when I saw that this had P90's in it! These pick-ups are $80 apiece! Grabbed it, got it home and plugged it in. Great warm tones, perfect for my more jazzy style! Yet, they screamed while playing some A7X, and classic Metallica. While I have never owned a Gibson family product, these pick-ups are well-known. After an hour of playing, it stayed fairly tuned, which surprised me at this price point. The neck on the guitar was silky smooth, but not as smooth as the Squire Bullet that I bought the same night. But a little pampering, it will be butter. Even the factory strings were not THAT bad, but as we all know...MUST GO. I got mine with an additional 15% off, but even at $130, this guitar is a steal! Don't take my word, go try one out on a Line 6 Spider IV, or Fender FM25.

Great Sound with these P-90's and great feel all around,

By Terrence Lipinski

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

I saw this being on sale during GC's Christmas TV ad and when I saw the price I just said, "Even I know that a No Brainier". So I was lucky enough to even pick the color of my choice which was the old style Gibson TV Yellow finish. Needless to say it was right on the money as you can still see the grain of the mahogany wood body thru the nice satin finish. The neck on this is just comfortable as any other nice flat rosewood or ebony neck on any guitar brand. I believe that it's here where the Epiphone by Gibson gets a total thumbs up as I know the neck is bolted onto the body and yet it just feels like it's an actual set in neck just like the real Gibson model would be. The ease of use is just fab when you hear the hot sound or mellow sound or clean sound these 2 single coil P90 pickups can put out. The pickups alone are worth the price of what I paid for the entire guitar. Don't walk by these on your way into a store by thinking you have to spend more money an a certain other guitar. Sit down and play one of these and you'll be amazed that this isn't just some beginners guitar, especially if you are a seasoned player like myself. These are wicked nice and I am sure that the Epiphone Special II model that comes with a tuneomatic bridge and humbuckers are also nice. However I was looking for that certain gritty sound that I knew these P90's should have and in fact that they do. However it's still such a great guitar. Fear not the machine heads either as they really aren't bad at all as they still have a 14:1 gear ratio and work very smoothly for keeping this guitar in perfect tune or concert pitch. Great job to the people at the Epiphone plant in Nashville,TN for making sure that these guitars are quality checked before being sent out. I have many guitars in my collection that I've used over the decades of playing but this is without a doubt one of my most best purchases dollars for guitar that one could ever expect to get these days. Rock on good people !!!

Not a "great" guitar, but a great value!

By Syd

from Lancaster, PA

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

Let me say, right off the bat, I own Vital Musical Instrument Repair, LLC in Lancaster, PA. I have been repairing guitars and other instruments for almost 30 years. Over the years I have collected many, many guitars but I don't have an abundance of them with P-90 type pickups. During the GC Labor Day sale, I decided to give this one a whirl. (I paid a ridiculously low price of $95-including tax). It is made in China--no big surprise. So the components ARE "cheap". The guitar definitely needed tweaked out of the box. The neck was very bowed and once the truss rod was adjusted properly, there was a small "hump" in the neck between frets 8-12. If it was more severe, I would return the guitar but it is not horrible and it wasn't bad enough that I considered doing massive fretwork to get the action down. I'd also like to say that even if the guitar had come through perfectly set up, I would have restrung & changed the setup. (I hate .009s--especially on an LP style guitar.) I put a set of .010s on and set it up. The frets took a little polishing--but for what I paid--I assumed they would. Once that was done, the guitar really lost a lot of it's "cheap" feel. I was very pleasantly surprised with the pickups--they have a really nice level of output & pretty good tone. Tuners are a bit rough but with a little work on the nut, tuning isn't an issue. I never liked the fixed bridge/tailpiece setup because you compromise on everything (intonation, individual string height, etc). That being said, the string height and intonation were both pretty acceptable once set. All in all-I'm very happy with my little $95 LP with P-90s. I originally planned on buying it to keep something cheap at the beach for when I spend time there. I think I may keep it here so I have constant access to it and I'll choose another one to leave at the beach.

Good Guitar for Low-Mid Budget

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

Well, I actually just picked this guitar up, but I had liked it the moment I played it about a month ago. I think the factory strings are ok, but you'll need to replace them. The body is nice and light, and seems very sturdy. The knobs are kinda cool looking, but don't have the best grip. Its got P90's for crying out loud! A STEAL!! The neck is nice and sleek, and feels nice in your hand. Overall is a wonderful guitar and a great deal.

Very Underrated Great Guitar for the Money

By Brian

from Escondido, California

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

This guitar is what it is. It is not designed to be a great concert level guitar for an experienced band on tour. It is a great beginner and practice guitar and good enough for novice recording. The P-90 pickups are great, the action and workmanship are above average, the strings are a bit lacking, the finish is pretty awesome, and the weight is lighter than average. It is amazing to see the number of people who expect this to be a higher quality guitar at 99 bucks. For the money, especially with the pickups it has got, it is a steal. Tweak it if you'd like; a few minor adjustments and some new strings, and it is good to go. Otherwise, what can you expect for around a hundred bucks? I have had this guitar as a practice guitar for about a month now and plan to pass it along to my daughter when she is able to start learning how to play in a few years, but I have also used it in at least two recordings.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

For the money you simply can not go wrong with this guitar. It absolutely rocks. I've been playing for over 20 years I've had all levels of guitars, with a bit of a tweak this baby is ready to go! Never buy a cheaper guitar and expect not to have to tweak it. I am still floored over the playability and sound of this little monster.

A lot of play for little money

By Jack Messina

from Macomb, MI

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

Was looking for an inexpensive guitar that I could throw in the bedroom in the event inspiration hit me. Was pleasantly surprised by the playability of this guitar. Extremely light, but balanced. Can play this thing all day without neck strain. Nice thin neck that is so smooth and slippery it feels like it was made out of baby powder. The tuners are so-so in that they aren't overly smooth when tuning, however hold tuning quite well. The P90s are awesome. Full of clean, distinctive tone that roars when distortion or gain are applied. I love P90s for the versatility of their sound. I find myself mostly using this guitar for playing through various guitar apps on my IPad. For $129 you get a well set up guitar, though I did lower the action, an easy task with this bridge, that won't break the bank or your shoulder. It sounds awesome clean or distorted and plays nice with IPad amp simulators.

My best guitar bargain purchase ever!!!

By erez farkash

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar in the beautiful T.V. yellow color which looks very classic and vintage.I am amazed by the quality of this guitar. The playabilty is really great everywhere on the neck...no fretting out issues or dead spots you might typically encounter in guitars priced this cheap. The workmanship is really tight. The acoustic tone is very resonant and balanced. You'd figure the pickups would sound bad for such a low priced guitars but again I am really impressed...they really do sound great.Of course installing more expensive P90s can't hurt but these stock ones do a fine job.The tuners even hold their tuning with great stability during live performances. What I like about this guitar is that it has it's own vibe and personality...it is not a pure Gibson Les Paul and that is fine since I own a true Les Paul std and SG 61 reissue. With it's thin body and bolt on neck it reminds me of a cross between a a 50s style Les Paul special and a Danelectro U2 model which makes for a cool and interesting guitar for sure. For this low price this guitar is a great choice to add to a collection where you want a different guitar that has a unique vibe.It sounds great for Blues and classic Rock.It twangs nicely too...similar to a Telecaster but with a fatter, grittier tone.

Surprised because I LIKE it!

By David

from Albemarle, NC

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

Firstly, good packaging. Epi and GC combined to make it UPS proof. Once I finally got through three boxes and the plastic to the instrument and tuned it up I didn't have to adjust ANYTHING to immediately start playing it. I played it for 10 mins, re-tuned and checked intonation and remarkably intonation is pretty good up to about 14th fret right out of the box. I played it for about an hour before I could put it down. Even the stock strings seem OK so I'm leaving them on for now even though I got some GHS Boomer 10's to put on it that are the same gauge as the stock strings because I didn't want to mess with intonation much at string change. The way this bridge is setup I think I'd better stick to 10's. After 5 days with it I'm sure this guitar is a good buy in an entry level electric, especially if you catch it on sale. I'm primarily an electric bassist gigging as such since 1969, but fool around for my own amusement with ukulele and Spanish guitar at home for a change of pace. I was getting bored with the instruments on hand and this was on special for Labor Day cheaper than dinner out and a movie. Ordered the Epiphone gig bag too and it is just fine too. You'll need a case or gig bag of some sort since one isn't included. I admit that I had a very negative opinion of Epiphone from experiences years ago but Epiphone is now making their instruments in China. The Chinese are making some good guitars now and right here is the evidence of it. The quality, fit and finish on this one is amazing for the money. Lots of people complain about the tuners and the one piece bridge but for just banging on it for fun at home it will be perfect as is. The pickups sound really good and you can get a surprising variety of tones from them. I don't like the position of the pickup switch, but that is a very minor thing. For someone starting out on electric guitar or looking for a different sound than a Fender this seems a very worthy option even at the regular price. If you can catch it on sale you need to get one! I know these pickups can't possibly be as good as the Gibson USA ones, but I had an old Gibson Les Paul Junior with a single P90 years ago and I'm thinking these Chinese pickups sound stellar for the money. They seem to have more solid lows to me than I recall on my old Gibson Junior, but maybe it is just that amps are better today than back then. The finish on my worn cherry one is more of a brownish red than the shiny wet looking chrome red in the website photos. It is a more natural looking mahogany color with a soft looking satin top coat. It isn't shiny but it looks richer than the price. I hate thick plastic finishes. The finish is also on the back of the neck and the headstock treatment is well done. I have the typical large fingers most bassists have but I can make most chords on this thing OK but I'm working to get used to it and even learning some new stuff so it is inspiring me to play more and hopefully better. I like the neck and the frets seem at least as well finished as a Squier or a Mexican Fender. All in all I'm very happy with it for the money and it is a pleasing change of pace from the Fenders I've always played before. It plays way better than my Alvarez or Yamaha flattops. The only Fender I've had that played this good was an old short scale Duo-Sonic. This new Epi is surprisingly heavy to me since I am used to Fenders and this body is way smaller than a Strat. It is maybe a pound or more heavier than my MIM Strat. It is heavier than most Fender electric guitars I've had and almost as heavy as some of my P-Basses. It is a nice chunk of mahogany and there will be no neck dive issues with it for sure. Checked all the screws and they are all snug. Wrenches are included for bridge and truss rod adjustments which is good to have. Lots of documentation is in the box I haven't even read yet and it has a good warranty too. There's a lot to like here for very little money. It plays better, sounds better and looks better than I expected. I'm floored. This isn't the best guitar in the world, which is why I gave it four stars, but it is a five star value and one of the best buys in the price range. You can't beat it for the money. Maybe I just got lucky, but I really like it.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

After ping ponging between Fender single coil and Gibson Humbuckers and playing blues both in my band as well as solo on a back porch chair for audiences, I had never touched a P90 pickup guitar. I wanted to correct that error and when I sat down and played in the store I knew this was a sound I'd been looking for. Warning: normal rant -- I grew up knowing the real masters in simple, direct blues such as Lightning Hopkins, Robert Lockwood, etc, and much of the Mississippi HIll Country greats, known and unknown. (Find Rural Blues on YouTube) It's a situation of one person, one guitar in making blues. This model quickly became my favorite for any venues at any time, and I long ago brushed off the normal attitude of "the more money I spend on a guitar the better i'll sound." It's all personal taste, but don't miss out on hearing this instrument coming out of you!

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

I'm more of Strat style sort of guy. I bought this because I was curious about the P90s. Didn't expect much for the price. Out of the box the action was a bit high, the neck was slightly bowed, and it just needed a good set up, but when I got it home I changed the strings to D'Addario XL110s. Which meant I was going to set it up anyways. I like to make tiny adjustments to the neck, play for a day, then come back and recheck it. At first it wasn't taking adjustment, like there is a lot of slop in the cavity. The hardware is cheap. The tuners will hold their tune well enough if you tighten the screws that hold the keys on, but I recommend replacing them eventually. The bridge is soft metal, that was already getting grooves pushed into it by the strings. I did like the sound of the P90s, and considered it a keeper that needed work. I came back to it a year later. This time I really cranked on the truss rod, and was able to get the neck adjusted. Then I was able to get the action a little lower, and the intonation near perfect. I was skeptical how well the fixed bridge would intonate, but now I realize, if the string height and intonation are relative, and the string height is fixed, then the intonation should be fixed, but I do think the 3rd string is intonated for a wound G string, as that one is a little off. I was beginning to fall in love with it. Initially I could not get the pickups to budge because they are so tight in the cavity. I had to really bang and pry at them with a screwdriver to get them at the proper height and angle, but when I did, wow! This guitar sings through my Orange Micro Dark, and has killer crunch through my Fender Hot Rod Deville with a TC Electronics Dark Matter distortion in front of it. I am now completely infatuated with this guitar, and I am considering a Gibson, but so far none are speaking to me like this, and I'm kind of realizing I need to disregard the price and just enjoy it for what it is.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

Overall a good experience for my first electric. The guitar stays in tune. The fretboard is a bit rough but doesn't affect my ham-fisted rhythm playing. The frets aren't the best finished I've seen but none are separating or too sharp. My guitar came set up with a low action and I only get any fret buzz when I beat on the strings.
I love the flat finish and prefer it over a heavy gloss. I definitely like this finish on the neck. The color is rich with no flaws.
The pots aren't scratchy and the tone knob is worth adjusting. Many cheep pots give you either zero or ten with no in-between.
The pickups don't hum, or buzz (I play through a small modeling amp). The selector switch feels a bit flimsy but does the job.
The strap buttons are tight and hold firm as they should in a solid slab of wood.
I'm happy with this as my first electric guitar and it may replace my acoustic as my main source of enjoyment.
I think I have an attractive and solid guitar and rate this four stars relative to its price point. I would recommend giving it a good once over before leaving the store with one.
I purchased this guitar for myself at G.C. in Winter Park, FL.

I've played 3 of these, and I knew within 2 minutes that I was buying them. I can't BELIEVE how well they play and sound! Plus they're just plain FUN! The only things that I've changed are the tuners. I've been playing for over 40 yrs and have owned too many guitars to count. These stack up to almost all of them. Highly recommended!

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

After reading the reviews, I went ahead and popped for one of these. Mine needed some setup work. They were 2 high frets that needed to be tapped into place and a neck adjustment. Pretty typical for a brand new guitar. Now for the guitar itself ... WOW! This thing sings. NECK: very fast action neck with real Les Paul Deluxe (circa 1970's) style frets make it easy to bend strings. I'll be putting my personal string configuration on it, but the OOTB strings are just fine. SOUND: The combination of the two P90 pickups PLUS the flexibility of the tone control let you get a wide range of sound. I'm playing through a 1973 era MusicMan 112RD 100 and this guitar makes it sound like a Marchall 50. SUSTAIN: I guess this proves that you don't need a 50LB piece of lumber and $1000 to get awesome sustain. Whatever tonewood they are using on these, coupled with the electronics, man this baby sings. TUNERS: Not bad, not great. You need to stretch the strings out, like any new setup. The stock strings did stretch quite a bit and after stretching it stayed in tune nicely, prior to that they went out of tune about every 5 seconds. NUT AND BRIDGE: Nut was properly set and at the right height. It "could come down a smidgen on the 6th and 5th strings, but the adjustment would be so slight as to not be noticeable in real world playing. The bridge also needed to be lowered a bit. That is easily done. Intonation was perfect all the way up and down the neck. As this is critical it's especially important to note that the bridge is a non-adjustable compensating saddle arrangement that has been around since the "time before time" (Planet of the Apes) FINAL COMMENTS: After playing this for about an hour, I realized that these guitar may be discontinued models. I tried to find it on the Epiphone website, no luck. Then I got to thinking that GC could either sell out or the price could go up, so I rushed over to GC and ordered a second one. They are THAT good! I am curious as to what the warranty is, I haven't checked the paperwork that came with the guitar. I doubt I'll have any use for it.

I was nervous about buying a cheap guitar. After bringing it home and playing with it for a night I love it. It's fun to play and has a nice sound, if you are hesitating buying this guitar because you're worried that it's too cheap to be worth your time, don't.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

I am a hobbyist/ collector and this is my first guitar with P90's. They are not intended to be used for Heavy Metal Rock and get a bit noisy if forced. But, if what you're after is a wide tone range of clean to moderately gritty tones you should love these. Also P90's don't have the sustain associated with humbuckers. Also in this price range you can't beat a solid mahogany body. I polished the body and added a Bigsby style vibrato to mine, and I am still waiting to receive a new pick guard.

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

My parents got this guitar for my birthday and it arrived right on time in the case we ordered for it and both the guitar and case were in pristine condition, no nicks or anything like that. I've had it for about 3 months now and I can say, without a doubt, I love this guitar! It's lightweight compared to most of the electric guitars I've picked up. It is thin, it's perfect for being lazy and laying down while playing. It looks amazing in black, and I mean amazing. And, it sounds great too, that is, when it stays in tune, which leads me into dislikes. This guitar, with all of its great qualities, has a few problems. First off, the tuning pegs are loose so setting your guitar down wrong can de-tune a string, I know from experience. Second, the guitar doesn't hold its tune, I play my guitars for long periods of time each day and have to tune this guitar about every 3 days while I only have to tune the Conn C-11 about once a month. For just playing for fun, this guitar is killer. I would most definitely recommend this guitar to a friend. Honestly though, with the problem of tuning, I'd give the guitar a 4.5 instead of a 5 but I couldn't so I just rounded

Comments about Epiphone Les Paul Special I P90 Electric Guitar:

The P90's grabbed my attention, so I picked up the floor model and it just felt right. I played it on several amps and loved the tone, so I bought it on the spot. The sales person brought me one from the warehouse in a box, same feel and set up was perfect. I own some high dollar guitars such as vintage Strats, Les
Pauls, Gretsch, PRS etc. and this one holds its own against them. Don't hesitate to buy cause its cheaply priced, think of it as finally getting something better than what you paid for.
