Incorporating the favorite designs of the late Allen Woody of the Allman Brothers Band.

Woody who passed away in August 2000 was an avid collector of vintage Epiphone basses and this signature model combines the features that Woody found best for playing in his aggressive rumbling style. It has a semi-hollow single-cutaway archtop body similar to that of Epiphone's Kat series but without f-holes. The neck is a 30" short scale for easier play. Mini-humbucking pickups in the neck and middle position deliver a warm tone. Gold hardware.

Epiphone Allen Woody Limited Edition Bass Features:

  • Semi-hollow single-cutaway archtop body without f-holes
  • 30" short-scale neck
  • Mini-humbucking pickups in the neck and middle positions

"The Mighty" Allen Woody "Rumblekat" Bass

Let's set aside for a moment that I am a huge fan of Allen's aggressive style of playing and let's focus on why he built this bass the way he did. I think it is very apparent that just looking at this bass the first word that comes to mind is VINTAGE. The short scale neck, gold mini humbuckers, chambered Les Paul body style, Gibson/Epiphone traditional control knobs mounted on a rectangular control panel and adjustable gold tail piece give this bass a look and sound from the 60?s similar to when Paul McCartney was playing his Hofner Viola Bass. One of the features that stand?s out the most to me on this bass over other basses is the short scale neck. There are very few basses out there with a 30? scale neck. This short scale allows less tension on the strings which really helps give that low end rumble. I love it when playing blues, rock or in an acoustic setting. At times it has the feel of a guitar because the strings are easier to push around on. The down side to that is if you play finger style versus playing with a pick. The loose action on the strings can be tough to control when trying to run a fast 16 with your rhythm fingers. Not that it can?t be accomplished; it just takes come getting use to at first. The tone of the bass does drop out a little too when playing finger style. However, with a pick the bass tones are extremely fat and rich. I compensate by turning up a bit and adjusting my mid?s and high?s. The other feature that I love and really stands out is the mini humbuckers set in a chambered body. I mentioned FAT and RICH tone above?this is were it comes from, the body. I have played this bass through several different heads mixed with different cab set ups as well as combo amps. Every time I get that same fat, smooth, rich tone that few basses have anymore. Those tones are great for blues, rock and acoustic gigs. On top of that, the chambered body is light weight which is comfortable for long gigs. Over all the look, sound and feel of this bass is awesome, especially for blues and rock players. I will admit that it is not always my first choice to use when gigging but the Rumblekat is always with in reaching distance during a gig. Sometimes I just leave it out during a gig because of all the compliments receive on it. Allen Woody did it right on this one and I wouldn?t trade this bass for the world.

is it time to reconsider ?

many talk about expensive basses worth over 2000 or 3000 bucks. and sometines we are selfish to accept the fact that a bass worth 500 bucks liek this one may sound better or the same like our expensive ones. it is tiem to revise our point of view regarding "cheap" instruments. this bass is what it says it is: A BASS that delivers huge lows and mids and discreet highs. of course it addresses to rock abd blues fans. playability? yes the best, light weight the looks? yes a beauty sound ? rock blues and motown fans will love it it sounds like classic precisions and JB of the sixties only more aggressive and punchy. for me that i am a Mule fan Allen woody's fan and a rocker this bass is the perfect combination of collectible item, tribute item and a super instrument to play with GET ONE NOW and i mean it!!!
