Overview

The Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy effects pedal presents a pure analog delay for musicians who covet thick sound from a thin wallet. EH melds heritage with select components to present the musician with up to 550ms of delay. Not a toy but a professional tool that bathes your axe with organic depth and dimension. The selectable chorus is a lush bonus.

The Memory Toy can be used in combination with other effects processors. Experiment with any combination to develop your own unique sound. The footswitch toggles between effect and true bypass modes.

Delay controls the delay time of the EHX Memory Toy guitar pedal and the range of delay time is from 30ms to 550ms. Turn the delay time clockwise to increase the delay amount. The Blend control allows you to vary the mix of direct and delayed signals from 100% dry when set counterclockwise to 100% wet at full clockwise. The effect pedal's feedback control increases the number of delay repeats or multiple echoes. At high settings the unit will begin to self-oscillate. Fairly high feedback with short delay settings produces a reverb type of effect. The Mod switch will enable a slow modulation on the delay time similar to the chorus modulation of the Deluxe Memory Man. The Status LED shows that the Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy is in effect mode. When the LED is off, the Memory Toy is in true bypass mode. Use the footswitch to toggle between the two modes.

Again.. this lets me put in a rating but the category isn't showing up.
So.. I'll give it a 9 on general principles.

I would not buy this unit unless I KNEW that I wanted the volume boost it gives.
I don't know of anyone who has a delay on all the time, do you?

Still. I have to say.. the tone is very nice. it's quite analog.. short on features? yeah but we KNEW
that, didn't we? This is the type of pedal I'd want if this didn't have the big vol. boost.
I like my Rogue Delay for the Tweed amp.. and I'll get something else for my Marshall clone.
9 on features as a penalty for the mod switch. you really have to reset the pedal to get a sound you can live with with the mod sw. on.
it varies in sound depending on the other settings of the pedal.
so.. nice but needs a bit of work.
Unlike others, I have NO issues with this pedal. I build and repair amps pedals and guitars.
There's a lot of stuff out there that suffers a bit from mass manufacturing processes.

My pedal does not pop at all. And I use it in an 8 Pedal line up, directly into a tube amp I made myself.

I simply don't have any complaints.
I have no idea what category is supposed to be for this part.. since it doesnt' show up.
so CONSIDER THIS TONE, I guess.

it has a boost. a slight upper midrange emphasis, too.

I would keep this pedal if it weren't for that boost!
Play this, for example, in my Tweed Deluxe clone. which is notorious for having a tender front end..
and it pushes into overdrive every time.
That was a really stupid thing to do.
Each time you turn it on, you're getting a pretty strong signal boost.
The tonal change is in the wrong area.. though I'd prefer to have none, exactly because of that..
it pushes overdrive and pushes fizz!

I have to either set my amp for lower volume so it doesn't boost.. or put another pedal in there to hold it back.
Which means I'd have to turn two pedals on and off at the same time.

it needs a Level control or get rid of that boost!

Just got this but I'm returning it tomorrow. The delay sounds good but it boosts your volume considerably when on regardless of how it's set. This may not be a problem if you only want it for solos (may even be advantageous then) or use it in an effects loop. But if you have no fx loop & want to use it on clean sounds it will boost your amps input driving your preamp tubes to earlier breakup. Also the modulation is horrible as set from the factory but you can adjust it internally from a trim pot located directly under the power supply input, however surprisingly there is no info about this in the documentation.I found out from Electro Harmonix site's forum.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy Analog Echo and Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal:

Let's be upfront about this: This is an ANALOG delay. Digital delay pedals tend to be a little easier to use, and you have to work a bit harder to find a subtle daly with this. But the price is right, and it definitely works. If you want a delay pedal that has presets, and is more "plug and play" this isnt the pedal for you. But I am satisfied and I'm not looking to replace it. It is a solid analog delay pedal.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy Analog Echo and Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal:

Electro Harmonix makes some great pedals.
I own three of there pedals and thought that a delay pedal would be nice to add to my collection. But after using it for a couple days I found that I could not include it into my music style.
Pedal worked great and the delay settings are awesome. From a slap back to a very long spacey delay. I do recommend this pedal to anyone looking for a good delay but its not for me.
Musicians Friend let me send it back with no problems at all. They where very nice and understanding and let me exchange it for another item I was needing.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy Analog Echo and Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've been very happy with the EH Nano-series pedals I've purchased. They are compact, affordable, rugged, have true bypass switching, and sound excellent. The Memory Toy is no exception. This is a real-deal analog delay with a very useable delay range that will take you from rockabilly slap back to longer, trippier repeats. The tone is old-school analog, with repeats that are dark and lush with some background hiss, just like the vintage BBD units. This pedal will easily self-oscillate, if that's your thing, but I generally prefer to dial back the feedback knob so that the repeats aren't too overpowering. The mod switch is a nice bonus. I had to play with the internal trim pot a bit to get it to where the effect is noticeable but not "seasick" sounding. If you try this adjustment, just make sure you locate and adjust the right trim pot (T8, If I remember correctly) because there are a bunch of them inside. If you are looking for crisp, uncolored, precise repeats, then you really want a good digital delay. This thing is dirty sounding-but in the best possible way.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy Analog Echo and Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal:

Just purchased this and I am very happy with it. I have owned DM2's, Digital Delays, and a Fab Echo. DM2's were great but just bought them to sell. Compared this to the Carbon Copy, and the TC Flashback. Carbon Copy sounds like a digital pedal to me. Did not like. The Flashback is very warm but did not need extra features.Just knowing my habits I need something very simple and intuitive.Bought this pedal knowing I would take it and trade it for the Flashback if I didn't like it once I got home. I will be keeping it. It sounds great

        Great Delay for Bass

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy Analog Echo and Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is a great delay for the average passive-pickup bass because it doesn't suck out the bass frequency, and it's very close to unity gain, so no volume dips when you use it. The Memory Toy ability to dial in a cool analog chorus effect is a big bonus considering a pronounced delay is only usable a couple of times in a set if you're on bass, and chorus is a very usable bass effect. The only con I've found is that you can't have too much attack to your bass notes, as there will be a sort of popping sound relative to how hard you hit the string. This is more a result of the pedal really nailing the analogy tape delay feel and sound, though, so I'm actually impressed. It just keeps it from being used on driving bass lines. Excellent for ambient, however.

Good pedal, but you get what you pay for.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy Analog Echo and Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this pedal brand new, and liked it. The controls are simple and effective. No tap tempo or anything fancy. I was getting an annoying "SNAP" every time I turned the effect on or off. The snap would echo since it's a delay pedal. I had the GC 30 day warranty, so I got a another EHX Memory Toy. The second pedal didn't snap as bad, but I've noticed some "Grainy" noises in the actual delays. It helps if you turn the BLEND down, which diminishes the delay effect. I can live with this pedal, but it's not my favorite because of these issues. I've read that some Memory Toys stopped working just after a few months. So far that hasn't happened to me, but I don't abuse it at all. I don't gig with it, or take it on the road. I just play it at home. They seem to be kinda fragile in the inside, and the MOD switch is dangerously close to the toggle switch. I'd suggest getting GC's Pro Coverage if you're planning on abusing this pedal, or get a Boss DD3. Boss pedals seem to withstand almost anything. I love the organic feel that analog provides in a delay, and the Memory Toy does that. It might die on you in the long run though. I'd suggest paying extra on something flawless that you know will last you a long time.

Comments about Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy Analog Echo and Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal:

I use this pedal with an acoustic rig. I won't put it on my electric rig as I don't care for the overall sound through a tube amp and electric guitar.

I found information on the web about tweeking T8, the trim pot screw at the very top of the pedal to do away with that seasick chorus sound. It works fine now, but I still don't use chorus. It's a bit muddy to me, the repeats and the delay don't stand out like they would with a digital or possible better circuit.

It's built well enough and by now they have cured the issue of the boards separating but not by much, just a rubber pad glued to the bottom of the board that recieves pressure from the back plate.

I do like that LED ZEP echo before the chord thing it can do if the blend is put to about 3 o'clock and the others are high too.

Overall, i bought it expecting different, but it's still useful for what I use it for.
