A bloody masterpiece!

Taking its inspiration from legendary British guitar amplifiers, the Electro-Harmonix English Muff'n Overdrive Pedal re-creates their majesty and classic tone with spot-on accuracy. Rather than approximating these amps as do emulator products, the English Muff'n employs real vacuum tubes, including a 12AY7 cascading into a 12AX7, to produce true Brit-valve sounds that are full of richness and natural saturation.

  • Old Marshall in a box

As reviewed by GREG POKORSKI on 6/13/2012

One of the best OD pedals I've ever used. If you love REAL tube tone this is the REAL deal. It's actually a tube preamp in a box. Supposedly runs at 280 volts! No cheap starved plate here. WAY more versatile than a Big Muff (I have an old '77). You can play open chords with it. Very touch sensitive with 2 slightly lower gain 12AY7 tubes. You can swap out practically any preamp tubes in it. Tried it with a JJ 12AX7 and sounded nice and heavy. The tone stack is warm & chunky on the bottom end. The tone of the pedal itself has a very razor sharp bite. The treble has to be rolled WAY back. Unfortunately got one with a bad tube but GC called EHX & got a new one & couldn't be happier. Incredible with a tube amp and really warms up a solid state too!

  • Not impressed

As reviewed by MIKE on 10/3/2006

I own a Big Muff also made by Electro-Harmonix. I am very impressed with that. This pedal on the other hand just doesn't sound as good. It's all preference, but I feel that it makes the amp sound "boxy" and the distortion sound isn't all that great. I feel that a good tube amp shouldn't need a pedal like this one. Although I love Electro-Harmoix, I don't feel that this pedal does a good enough job.

  • Exactly what I wanted...

As reviewed by Quest4Christ on 6/1/2007

This pedal blows away any Distortion I have ever run through. In my attempts to emulate that signature JCM2000 warm OD I stumbled across this tank! Swapped out the 12AY7 in the second position for a Mesa Boogie 12AX7 made in Russia, and watch out. With the gain at about 12 o'clock, and the Bass a lil higher than 2 o'clock I'm pulling AC/DC sound at no problem. With the Gain at around 4 oclock I'm killin my Old TSL60 stack I used to own. Purchase one, you wont be let down!!!
